I just heard this tune and it is love at first sight such amazing instrumental interplay or love at first listen lol I have listen to the guys for 45 yrs in there various configurations RTF. Jlp. I think its my favorite song right now. Such beauty. And yes its cool Al quotes layla. Such a master of the guitar love Stanley Clark. His solo is amazing. Love the unison stuff Al and JLP do. 10 stars on this one.
Wow this brings back memories of going through the used record bins in Berkeley and Santa Cruz. Andreas Vollenweider, Jean Michael Jarre, Shadowfax, Windham Hill artists…..wow. Only a very few people understood. Saw JLP at Greek Theater-lots of goosebumps.
@@boweevil6442 I saw Rite of Strings at the Backyard 1995, the year it was released. I've only been there twice. Rite of Strings and Jethro Tull 2002. I didn't see SRV Town Lake 1990. The loss of old Austin and SRV are great tragedies. Had to leave my home town couldn't afford Austin, now live at the sacred spring where the temp is always the same.
Thanks for posting this. The first time I saw JLP was front row in 1977. The Aurora tour, at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach-both shows- .Was a fan from his work with Zappa. I saw him a few years later at the Hollywood Bowl and then again after I moved to Portland at the Paramount and then at the Civic. His music and this song made me learn how to play guitar. JLP along with Allan Holdsworth, Return to Forever and Tony Williams Lifetime gave me the most inspiration. Please remember this was a time when the record companies and radio were ramming disco down our throats!!!! I still like to play along with them at home.
I saw JL-Ponty for the first time at the Cascais Jazz Festival, back in 1973(?)...got fan. And this theme from album AURORA, is just wonderful, to listen with the heart. I have the CD.
Conheci este artista formidável pela rádio Liberdade FM 99,7 de Aracaju, Sergipe, Brasil. Infelizmente, essa rádio não existe mais. Saúdo os falantes da língua portuguesa!
It's hard to believe three people can be just one and play this marvel... and on scene, with the most absolute silence from the public... really, a rite of strings....
I agree with busybody19 who said this: "OMG thank you so much for posting this ! it was posted before, but taken down and alot of people were looking for this master piece! I am so grateful to you for posting this, please keep it up. I am a huge fan of this song and Mr. Ponty" FUCK YEAH!
I have the CD of "Cosmic Messenger"...great stuff. Remember the days of "Return To Forever" and "Romantic Warrior"? My son and I saw Al a couple of years ago here in Portland, OR. My brain loves this so.
Love love LOVE ! The studio album is a masterpiece ! Wish they would record more ! Thank YOU for sharing because this song is SO enchanting among all of the others though this is a favorite also Memory Canyon. DiMeola's wink to Layla is grand !
Every time I try to complain about a 4-chord-pop-tune and its inherent lack of sophistication I'm inevitably brought back here to remind me that i have no absolutes :=) thank you, boys!
This Montreux concert from 1994 brings together 3 of the great talents of jazz fusion. Stars in their own right, Al Di Meola (guitars), Stanley Clarke (bass), and Jean-Luc Ponty (violin) reach new levels of virtuosity as a trio. A triad of mastery !
Thank you for the music lessons. I’m finally playing with an accomplished violinist who can read the music and show me the guitar part in the familiar chorus/reprise. After 44 years Of knowing this song, I can play it and be really happy with it.
"Renaissance" has long been my favorite JLP composition, with the gorgeous Patrice Rushen piano solo on the Aurora album. This performance here is by FAR my favorite live performance. Di Meola channeling "Layla" just adds to the magic. So glad this video has returned to RU-vid. For some reason, I couldn't find it over the past year or two. Grateful and blessed.
Well, I don't know if it was intentional or not, but from 4:38 I hear a bit of 'Layla' by Eric Clapton. Either way, a great piece and a fantastic concert with amazing musicians.
It was fun to hear DiMeola quote "Layla" in his solo, but it's not the way of jazz quotes & 'teases' to 'milk it' for quite so long... A couple bars is adequate.
