River Caves Canyon is a reasonably easy to get to canyon on the Newnes Plateau, to the east of Lithgow, NSW. At the time of shooting this video, the road in was closed for major repairs, so I had to walk an extra 6kms to get to the usual parking spot on Mount Cameron Fire Trail.
A word of warning, when the road does open back up, take the right turn towards Deep Pass, then take a left turn to head out to this spot, if you take the first left (Mount Cameron Fire Trail), you will need a serious 4WD to cross the creek and get up the rutted, slippery clay hill.
In the beginning of the video, I mention it was 15 minutes into the canyon, I was actually meaning to the turn off of the entry track from the car park, from that point, it is about 30+ minutes to the start of the canyon.
The canyon is family friendly and suitable for kids, the walk in can be steep in places and also indistinct where flood damage has washed away the bank that the track followed. Just bring shoes you don't mind getting wet, some water and enjoy exploring somewhere wild. Please take your rubbish out with you.
Such a stunning location to be privileged to visit, having been here a couple of times, it still takes my breath away! At different times of the day, the canyon's appearance changes dramatically as the sun moves overhead and lights up the walls of the canyon differently.
At the end of the canyon, you can either turn around and head back on through, or, there is a rough, indistinct and steep exit track that really only experienced bush walkers should tackle, not suitable for children at all.
