*Overall **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I feel the Shadowfire 360 offers excellent value for those who are new to tenkara and don't want to break the bank on their first rod purchase.*

Fabulous! Went fishing on our local Lourens River in the Cape yesterday evening but no fish in sight.. Maybe too late at the end of summer now.. Water quite shallow and running softly?

You made some decent factors there. I looked on thevideo for the difficulty and found most individuals will associate with with your video.

Am a real novice at this. Would appreciate a better understanding of where exactly your casting, ie: where the fly is landing, and why you're casting there. If you can use a pointer in the editing, that would be valuable.

@normanbfifteen3468 8 лет назад
+Tom Solitario He seems to be casting directly against the current. By doing so he can pull up line as the fly floats to him preventing any drag or slack in the line. Fish hang out in front of big rocks

+Norman Bfifteen i thought it was behind where the waters slower?

The back of the rock can cause a swirling that they don't really like. Where as the front of the rock is slowed due to it being slowed down by the rock in the way. So they hang out right in front often near its base.

Wow just seeing this out of the box ru-vid.comUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.

tiny fish. what a "heaven" would it be for you to experience nymphing the Bow river, Alberta, just down steam of Calgary about this time of year till the week of the stampede[just before the river rises from runoff(2-3 weeks) and water clarity becomes the factor] sometimes a 2-5lb fish a cast! for a couple hours. browns and rainbow. my biggest in 5 yrs- 8lbs. 4wt rod, 10lb Axion tippet. only used 1 pattern- 14-16 beadhead pheasant tail[some guys only used juan won worm]! plenty times broken off @ take! one day i'm going to go back!

*Well this rod is not the case! It's a level above the chain sporting goods store beginner rods. A very nice feel, excellent quality and finish, I would call it medium fast, but I'm not that well experienced in different weights.*

If you have a fly shop or cabelas near by talk to them, they are usually very helpful. There are some great vids on beginner fly fishing on youtube. I started out years ago with a video (before youtube) called fly fishing for trout by gary borger. It covers everything from equipment to casting,flies ect. You can now find it on youtube. I think I started with a 7 1/2 foot 4 weight rod. Then you just need leaders and tippet,flies and a couple of tools like clippers and a hemostat.Hope that helps. Good luck!

Great video Jonathan. One thing I would do with your videos is subtitles for the parts where there are rapids. It can be a little hard to hear sometimes.

Ok all I'm going to say is yes he knows what he's talking about. But pointing out "this was my first 5 casts" and "most people would just walk right past this spot" is a bit condescending. Also if you look closely there is obviously a hatch happening. A million little bugs flying above the surface. You could tie a cigarette butt at the end of the fly line and hook fish under these conditions.

Love your videos Mr. Barnes. I've just started getting into fly fishing and fish a lot of small streams. Your videos have provided excellent tips and tricks. You and your camera man capture the essence of fly fishing very nicely and its a pleasure to watch your videos as well. Thanks!

Hi Walney1956- I tie the dry fly on a small dropper about 2-3 inches long. I prefer this to off the hook point which reduces hook ups on the dry in my opinion.

@JonathanBarnes
@JonathanBarnes 12 лет назад
HI Ermintrude (I still remember the magic roundabout!)- The nyphs are soft hackled flies with heavy tungsten beads (3mm). In this type of water its important to get the flies down fast. Fish often hold in depressions just behind rocks and will not venture up very often except for example in a heavy caddis hatch.

question. Im relatively new to fly fishing. What are your guys opinions on those entry level Redington rods around the $130 range? I bought a redington crosswater and obviously its no Sage but it operates fairly well. Just looking at some expert insight regarding longevity and performance.
@bossamood6536
@bossamood6536 6 лет назад
Have been fly fishing now for some 25-30 years, and assume you refer to trout fishing mainly.But some great advice is this; Firstly, about rods, you can buy a $700-800 rod or a $130.00 rod, both will do the same job adequately, but neither can or will guarantee that you will catch fish! That comes down to practise and building your knowledge about fish behaviours, habits and the characteristics of the water you will fish on. As a beginner its better to start with a mid-tip action rod I feel, then after some experience, try the slower and faster actions maybe, each have their own applications for the type of water you intend to fish, but the mid-tip is a very versatile action and forgiving of casting mistakes.I have a Redington Classic 8.5ft (Mid-tip action) great rod. And which rod length you choose may also depend on the type of water you fish e.g. 6-7ft for small streams; 8-9ft for medium /larger rivers; 9-11ft for lakes or Czech nymphing etc and so on!As with most 'man-made' things, rods will last for as long as you maintain and look after them and no, you don't have to spend lots of dollars or pounds to get a good rod and enjoy fly-fishing, Redington lower end rods are fine.You just need to get out their often and practise and get the feel of your rod and get used to it's action. Secondly, one thing I would say is critical and would most definitely emphasize is to choose the best quality fly line you can afford and match the line size, weight etc to the rod, this is very important. You will see rods have line sizes e.g. 3-4 wt or 6-7 wt written on the rod. Fly lines are either weight forward or double taper etc....always choose the latter (highest) number as a beginner. Double tapers are generally used for small to medium streams or rivers, where you are not casting very long distances and require delicacy more than distance; whereas weight forwards, as they denote, have all the weight towards the front of the line giving it the ability to cast greater distances (e.g. in lake fishing). But in smaller numbers say up to line weight 4 they work equally well on smaller to medium rivers as well.Salmon fly fishing on the other hand is similar in application, but with different casting techniques e.g. using two hands to cast longer rods (11-16ft) and lines, and different casting styles and so on. Hope this is of some help.

Hi Jonathon, sorry the pc has hiccupped a few times but simply wanted to compliment you on yet another classic video particulary in respect of the upstream nymph. You are an inspiration to us all. regards

Hi Jonathan, great video as usual. How do you connect the nymph? Is to the hook bend or do you use a dropper. I alway find the duo a pain to cast any distance.

Nymphing ripply water is my favourite - and your right : everyone just walks right the best water. I have always had more takes in the ripples than deep pools...I think larger fish move into fast water pockets to feed using the ripples for better cover . .. ive never nymphed without flyline though..although it seems to work fine for really small runs..

hey at about 7: and a half minutes in u were at a fast secton of the river/creek. is it best to use dry flies in slow areas and nymphs in fast?
@sakanatsuri

Nice video. I have a question. There are rocks on the bottom of the river I usually fish. Those rocks are covered with thick moss or sort. Fly (Nymph) gets stuck on those rocks often and I lose many flies (Nymph). I use indicator (it floats) with a small split shot for Nymphing. The river is about 1-2 feet deep, and it is just like the river in this video. What is your advice? Thank you.

Great video, I especially enjoyed the section on pocket water. Do you use weighted nymphs or some other method to get down to the bottom of the pool, or do you rely on the trout rising from cover to grab the fly in the faster water?

I feel like fish are less active during hatches such as this; It's almost as if they know there's a lot of options and are therefore more scrupulous in their selection. Also, 8:25 is an "I'm about to cast this is pool for the 15th time/holy shit I have a fish" scenario. So basically you can't. Need to have tight lines when nymphing.
