For the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes,* the Middle Fork of the Salmon River has been their home since time immemorial. They and their people remain inextricably linked with its waters even after a history of forced removal from the landscape and generations of disconnection and trauma. The Middle Fork is a place to reconnect with Mother Earth, to reclaim their culture, and heal amidst the memory traces left by their ancestors.
"River of Return" is a love story with many facets. Like the river, it's an evolving love story for Jessica and Sammy Matsaw, Shoshone-Bannock and co-founders of River Newe. It's about the love between tribal leaders and their youth. And it's about the love they all share for the Salmon River. Follow Jessica and Sammy as they share their story about the power of hope and perseverance, resilience and resurgence, and the vitality of sharing these lands and waters with today's tribal youth and the generations to come.
*The Middle Fork Salmon River lies within the state boundaries of Idaho. Idaho boundaries overlap the usual and accustomed areas (or traditional lands) of five tribes: the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, the Nez Perce Tribes, the Coeur d’Alene, the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, and the Shoshone-Paiute.

Had the privilege of meeting Danny Stone and other Shoshone Bannock members on a middle fork float last month. Such an easygoing and enlightened group. World needs more of this.

I love all American-Indian nations, we as Americans must never forget them and their traditions. God bless the Shoshone people and God bless Sacagawea and Cameahwait (Sacagawea's brother and Chief who traded horses to the Corps of Discovery/Lewis and Clark Expedition). The Shoshone people have a unique story to tell in the American tradition. The American people (all of us, of all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds) should never forget our debt to the Shoshone for ensuring the success of the Corps of Discovery, and as a result the American Dream itself, the belief that Americans can accomplish the impossible.

One of the very best things I've seen on YT for a long long time. So encouraging too. May the Eternal Creator of all these things and his peoples too, bless and heal and restore what 'the locusts stripped away'. greetings from New Zealand.

A beautifully shot short. Makes me think that an indigenous outfitter could do really well on the Middle Fork! ***** I did have some feedback regarding the "mussel crudo" scene @ 8:55 While I fully support protecting the rights of indigenous groups for whom it holds a cultural significance to occasionally and sustainably collect these freshwater mussels, I find it irresponsible to fail to mention this bit of nuance since in general Western Pearlshell mussels should not be collected or disturbed by the general public. While there remain a small handful of healthy populations in the West, their general numbers are rapidly declining and their fate is uncertain. These mollusks are having a hard enough time contending with devastating changes to their ecosystems; the last thing they need are ill-informed backcountry gourmands collecting them for their dinner tables. ***** P.S. I did get a big kick out of the tandem rowing @ 5:40

This may have been Shoshone Bannock but as you may or may not know this is within the Nez Perce Treaty of 1855 now maybe a review of treaties etc wd be a good idea

In the past, the way things used to be,,,, I don't think anyone "felt safe" trying to survive in the wild salmon river country. If you think the MFS is a safe place, you are asking for trouble. The river is too old to give a rip about people. Many learn that the hard way.
