Kyle, from a current driver of an R1T I really appreciate your channel and the functions you have been doing to discover This charging curve data. I was in Austin last weekend and found that 154 was the peak I could get on EA charger, before the update. I'll be heading to Arkansas this weekend and have the update installed. So fingers crossed I'll get a better curve. We will also have options for more charges on I40 that I did through the Panhandle to Austin.

My takeaways as a soon-to-be-Rivian owner: - If on a long trip, aim to charge around 10% rather than pushing for a few more miles - Pack Nascar cooling fans to minimize charge time - You don't sleep I can't wait to see what else you learn about these vehicles once you start making voltage, current, and sensor measurements!

Nice job Kyle! I tend to think that the heat isn't the cells. 220kW just isn't pushing the cells particularly hard given how large the pack is. I suspect it's more likely that it's a cable or subcomponent somewhere that's heating up. Whether that component is inside of a cooled system or not is anyone's guess. So it may be manageable by software, or it may not. Without some official clarity by Rivian we're just making educated guesses based on observed behavior obviously.
@KyleConner
@KyleConner 2 года назад
Totally agree, Brice. We don’t know the exact cause of charging power derating and we don’t fully know if it’s in or out of the cooling loop. Especially at low SoC the truck would derate power right after the fans and AC compressor kicked on to chill to subambient temperatures. Later on in the night it would derate without the chiller running. It’s possible it just can’t cool whatever is causing this limitation, which would be a huge oversight in my opinion. Time will tell I guess! I’ll keep testing the truck on different software and if any big changes come up, I’ll put out a video on it.

@football0552
@football0552 2 года назад
@@graemeesmith or a component of the pack, but basically yes. It could be the intake connector the pack. Which would be a pretty significant oversight. They could also have some very stringent temperature limits set right now and haven't enabled much logic for managing the temp. I would just be surprised if it's the actual cells because each individual cell isn't charging particularly quickly, and there is a lot of thermal mass to distribute that heat over compared to other packs and the relative charging rate.

Excellent, excellent charging analysis on the R1T. If you think about where Tesla was when they came out with the Model S in 2012 to now, it took a long time for Tesla to nail it in terms of HPC. With Rivian in a few months of R1T deliveries and what they have already accomplished, I'd say it's astonishing in how much they have accomplished and listened to folks like you to improve on their shortcomings including HPC. I know Rivian is going to be the benchmark when it comes to trucks. Ford F150, your next.

The battery needs to be hotter to accept more current. I'll guess that the Rivian engineers know what they're doing and the cooling that coincides with current reduction is intentional, as the battery doesn't need to be as hot at lower currents. While the hotter battery allows faster charging, it also causes faster degradation. Time spent in high temps , while necessary for fast charging, should be minimized.

I believe Rivian uses end cooling like Lucid because a flat plate is a lot easier to mass produce than a curvy plate that has to go in between the cells. But I noticed from the Cyber Rodeo that at least the new 4680 packs will use radial cooling. Wonder how that affects charging speed.

15:52 Out of curiosity, are you using 800 V vehicles when you're running into the 350 A max current on Electrify America? These EVgo 350 kW chargers have the same limits at over 500 V. Essentially, it's possible that the EA chargers that are listed as 350 kW are only operating at 150 kW, but unless you're in an EV that can actually accept 500 A at under 500 V, you won't be able to validate whether the charger is capped at 350 A regardless of voltage or whether the charger can provide 500 A when operating under 500 V.
@newscoulomb3705

My guess is that this might be the CCS harness itself. Has anyone pulled the charging harness to see what gauge wire it's using?
@ahbushnell1
@ahbushnell1 2 года назад
I think going to 800 V will make a significant difference. You need a lot less copper in the system at the same power. So it should help on the cost. Loss goes as I^2*R. So half the current is 1/4 the power loss in the copper.
@npm5073
@npm5073 2 года назад
This was my thought as well. If everything else was kept the same (cooling, copper, outside temperature, etc) but charged at 800V instead of 400V you would see double the power delivered for the same amount of time (Power = Current * Voltage). Also is there something I'm missing about the voltage on the battery cells? Kyle mentioned that 800V charging will help with the cables, but not the battery cells. My understanding is that the cells would heat up in the same amount of time, but double the power would have been delivered in the same time period.

I worked on static battery banks and other smaller ones. The charger regulates on the highest cell voltage. So if the battery string is not balanced it will slow down charging "early" to prevent damage to the one cell. The BMS adjusts the balance on the cells but that takes time. I wonder if the change in percent charge is because of the balancing???? Looks like a great truck. Very expensive. Do you think the prices will come down?

@e-redj
@e-redj 2 года назад
The main problem with battery cooling and when you should start is the humongous thermal mass of a battery. If a tanker is moving at its maximum speed and you want to use many tugs to stop it, it will take some time till you get it to a stand still. 🤪 And if you need a temperature range where charging is at its best, things get nastier. As you say, I also hope that the cooling system has been dimensioned correctly, and now they just need more data to understand how to make the cooling more effective.

As a retired electrical engineer, this is something that Rivian should have a better handle on. Of course, their main goal was to deliver product but one the most important issues about the general population accepting EV’s is the time to “fill up” to make the next 150 - 200 + miles (potty break every 2 to 3 hours). Since temperature of the battery is critical for overall life of the battery, seems that charging performance should have been a high priority. But with the majority of people charging overnight, perhaps they allocated time on other priorities to get product out the door ASAP. Very interesting video. Looking forward to others. Thanks.

@@ericklein5097 I agree. The C rate is more as important than a gas vehicle having the right fuel type and oil changes. The C rate should be consumer information provided upon purchase of a vehicle and in the about information and settings in such vehicle. I know the vehicle determines the charge rate but I wouldn't want my vehicle to charge anywhere near the max C rate. I would also like to see the setting on the screen on how fast in C rate my car is discharging. I would rather prevent battery degradation then go fast or be comfortable. I would also like to see the option for slower charging at superchargers to prevent degradation

Is there any way you should show the same graphs but with time on the X axis instead of SOC? It would also be interesting to look at miles gained per minute of charging. I think this would be a great visual to describe your strategy about charging until the power drops or whenever you can make it to the next charging station on road trips.
@jwardell
@jwardell 2 года назад
Extra fans may not help if the issue is transferring heat away from the cells, possibly due to pack cooling system design. But I think the reality is it’s still very early and Rivian has to keep all the limits on the safe side. The curve should look like a hill so clearly they could hit 250kw+ peak with more current and cooling. But I think they are just overcompensating on thermal limits and will get braver with max temps as time goes on. Back when I got my Model 3 it only charged at 120kW and they took nearly two years to go to 150 and then 240kW. So great to see Rivian quickly respond with solid improvements and I hope it continues.

It all "boils" down to IsquaredR 500 squared is 250000 so even one milliohm is 250 watts. It is very very hard to get extremely low resistance in all the items where the current has to flow. I would guess that a minimum of 2500 watts is being dissipated. Most likely more. Like two electric frying pans going full blast. Then there is the double whammy. As any part of the conduction path heats up the resistance of that part rises, making even more heat.

Kyle, appreciate all your input on the Rivian and that Rivian was able to pickup so many things. Kinda strange they had apparently not done done enough user testing before releasing the vehicle. Not sure why you think going above 500A would be a good idea for Rivian’s adventure network, it can’t deal with thermals of the 500A now. PS I like how you added theoretical to the comparison chart of 450 versus 500 but you do not have a theoretical in the title of the top chart, I would suggest adding it as it required eight different sessions to piece that together.

Does anyone know what 0% SOC is in relation to cell voltage? I'm pretty sure the Rivian uses Samsung 48G and I'm sure they keep the cell voltage around the 3.0V to 4.0V range to extend cycle life. I expected to see 0% to 10% SOC get a really low charge rate but then I remembered they aren't likely using the entire range of the cells so using a low charging rate when at the very bottom of the cell's voltage range isn't necessary because the vehicle won't let you go that low. If you have a Lithium Ion cell that is below its minimum voltage (2.5V or 2.75V typically, LFP can be as low as 2.0V) you do not want to charge anywhere near 1C or even 0.5C. Any overdischarged cell (

Let’s not rule out any potential demand limiting from the charging station, many utilities have a 12 month ratchet on peak kW demand, so they might have a 15 min limit before higher prices kick in... 450 kW is a pretty big spike for the utility and electricity has to come from somewhere. I would be interested to see the real time pricing for the higher amperage cases.

The future - 2 batteries - and the batteries must be easy to replace. I run 2 batteries on my electric bike - 2 separate chargers - so I reduce the Time to recharge - to 8 hours

19:37 The GMC HUMMER EV is also technically an 800 V architecture (the nominal voltage appears to be only 700 V), but it is over the 500 V cutoff, which means that while the HUMMER EV does appear to be able to accept 500 A, none of the 350 kW chargers will provide the 500 A at 700 V. It would be a pleasant surprise if the EVgo Ultium Ready chargers could provide 500 A at up to 1000 V, but based on the Signet spec sheets that I've seen, they are all limited to 350-375 A.

Where do you have that information about the 500V cutoff from? In Switzerland an electric truck company tested a public ABB 350kW charger with theire 800V based truck and charged for one hour at 350kW (710V - 800V and 490A - 435A). Why would that be different in the US? Not saying you are lying, I am just confused why it would be that way.

@@jojoyes I'm getting it from the ABB, BTC Power, and Signet spec sheets. Also, based on the rating system, a charger that can provide 500 A up to 1000 V would be rated "450 kW" or "500 kW." It wouldn't still carry the "350 kW" rating. For what it's worth, yes, there is a significant difference between North American CCS1 and European CCS2. When Porsche tested their "450 kW" chargers several years ago, it was in Europe using the CCS2 standard. To date, I do not know of any charger with that power rating that is open and available to the public. Do you have a link to that charging session with a Swiss EV truck on ABB chargers? Again, I know of prototype chargers that can provide that power, but nothing open for public use. Maybe it was an ABB test facility? ABB opened 150 kW chargers about 4 to 5 years ago in the U.S. that were also restricted to automaker testing (no public access).

Isn’t the hummer truly a 400v with a electronic switch to switch voltage from parallel to series so it looms like 800v to get to full the system? I know rivian filed a patterned for it.

@@Karlhung The HUMMER EV powertrain is 400 V, but the battery can be switched between 400 V and 800 V, yes. However, as far as charging is concerned, it's an "800 V" architecture. @Johannes Leicht sent me a link to a truck charging on an ABB Terra HP charger at ~500 A at ~700 V, so I had to check the ABB spec sheets. While the Signet spec sheets only breakdown 500 V and 1000 V current limits, ABB actually provided a chart for their Terra HP units that shows that they can provide up to 500 A at 700 V, dropping to about 380 A at 920 V. Also, it's worth noting that, based on the Cadillac LYRIQ, the HUMMER EV should actually be able to take more power than even these "350 kW" chargers can provide, by accepting 500 A to as high as 760 V. The question beyond that is whether the Cadillac LYRIQ, GMC HUMMER EV, and Rivian R1T can actually accept more than 500 A. But as Kyle noted, it would probably take something like Rivian's RAN to be pushed past the current, approved 500 A CCS cap.

@@newscoulomb3705 will be interested to see if the rivian has a software ota eventually to let it swap from 400v to 800v. My assumption when testing initially this is how they should 150 miles in 20 mins. I’m guessing since they have the patent perhaps they are waiting until they unleash their charging network before the ota?

Officially putting Rivian in the "Serious about OTA Updates" category. The only other manufacture in there is Tesla as was mentioned in the video. Ford is applying but we're still checking references. No one else is even playing the game.

Instead of huge fans to cool the Rivian battery pack, a lawn water sprinkler would work better at removing heat.
