I do product engineering myself, not cars but industrial equipment. It's always nice to see engineers going the extra mile and put in creative effort. It's also good to see a company that will allow their engineers to spend the extra time required to do this kind of stuff. Ultimately you get a better product for it. The tight tolerances and higher complexity to parts, the variability in materials and construction methods, these all show flexibility in design creativity and a broader knowledge set. Elements are purposeful and specific to the target function. Unfortunately, it isn't a design that's highly cost effective, so this is never going to be a design you'll see at $30k or $40k. There's just too much cost in what's being attempted. But there is also the ever present value for the money. Are the dollars being spent well? Are the dollars being spent in the right ways? Is the extra $10k or $20k really well spent? Are you getting a substantially better product? This is something I wrestle with customers all the time on both customs and volume production designs. At the end of the day, price is generally not the problem. But falling short on the features, quality, and performance is. A product that under delivers is a product that does not have value to most customers. A great example is the decades of earlier EVs and hybrids that never really took off. It was never that people didn't want it. It was that for the most part, many missed the mark considerably. Only a few hit well on the target, and those few saw significant volumes of sales. A great example is the Prius. The package as a whole had few faults and the overall design targets were inline with customer interests. Rivian took a particularly smart approach that to date no one else had taken. As a startup, they took the two most popular platforms on the market, SUVs and pickup trucks, and that's what they built. Every other startup went straight to a halo car only meant to entice the more wealthy early adopters. But this pool is limited, and both the price point and the market space is competitive. Tesla got lucky getting a decade of market time by themselves. That was a massive luxury nobody else has. So to follow the same approach with a halo car for seed money to scale up is maybe not the ideal choice. Additionally, the major automakers are now stepping into the game. Ford is hitting the EV sector hard with some great offerings. Now it's no longer just startups. Now it's the big fish too. So, how do you sell and grow? The better bet is to aim for the big market pools. You'll sell numbers, and this also has its challenges, but you'll have a higher volume of customers that likely won't run dry. The challenge for Rivian is they took long enough that automakers like Ford put a truck in the market space at nearly the same time. A Rivian just a year earlier would have presented a significantly different market prospect. Late to market is just as big of a downfall. Luckily Rivian didn't put in a half effort. They attempted to exceed expectations, and that will likely pay dividends as the brand name grows upon that.

Hopefully happens sooner than later, the charging speed especially

When you hear an old dyed in the wool off-roader like Sandy Munro saying he doesn't miss his latest Jeep and likes his new BEV Rivian better, that isn't good news for Stellantis or the Jeep brand. Glad to see the uncovered suspension and hear the analysis from the suspension experts at Munro. I'm a little disappointed the front cradle is still welded extrusions rather than a fully developed die casting as that adds cost and lowers production volume. Hope to see that change as production volume builds at Rivian.

Thank you for taking the time to show this off. It's fantastic. I also really appreciate the no nonsense opinions. Thank you. Air suspensions can be a maintenance or repair nightmare in cold weather, as it ages. How serviceable is it? How does it compare to others currently on the market for maintenance costs? Just the air suspension components. It seems obvious to me that Rivian is losing money on every vehicle sold. How much? Will it hurt the company overall? My gut says no, based on your reviews alone. When affordability becomes a thing with EV pickups, will the suspensions look like those on medium duty trucks?
@droolguy
@droolguy Год назад
@@mayflowerconsulting5540 No. The Rivian's suspension is actually pretty fragile compared to even modern 1 ton light duty trucks. It falls somewhere in between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton (150/250). Medium duty trucks don't start until the 450/550 range, and their suspension would be massive overkill for anything that doesn't have a GVWR in excess of 14,000lb... the Rivians GVWR is only 8532.

Same here in Australia- probably won’t even see it here - EVER. I just hope we see the Cybertruck downunder 🇦🇺some day. If so, it will replace my Jeep GC.

Would have preferred some additional information on suspension setup. How's the unsprung mass?
@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 2 года назад
It's a very conventional aluminum double A-arm front and 5-link independent rear suspension, so unsprung mass should be similar to other vehicles of similar design and axle capacity.

Quite an endorsement by Sandy..."this could be the last vehicle I ever buy". Wow, that's saying a lot. I certainly hope it continues to live up to its expectations. No reason that it doesn't. Always - as usual - a great analysis by Munro Live.

The Rivian does have a full frame like any other pick up truck .."body on frame",..though the body is mounted directly to the frame without any rubber bushings in-between like you see in all other pick-up trucks.

Yeah , I was going to say that the Rivian has driveshafts articulation similar to the original HMMV Humvee 1 , I forget the clearance numbers , but I think it was something like 18 inches or more.

Just wondering what Sandy had to pay for his Rivian? I would be more impressed by his enthusiasm if Rivian hadn't just increased the price. Sandy do you still feel the truck is worth the additional 25 percent price increase? I feel this takes it out of the average persons price point for future orders.

also regarding the motor padding... anti vibration pads for heavy machines or air compressors will have multiple layers alternating hard and soft materials as that absorbs more vibration than just one thick soft layer

The guys over at TFL Truck, (The Fast Lane), lived with a Rivian for a week and they fell in love with it. They put it through some pretty tough testing from off-road Colorado trails, carrying a huge load of fire wood and towing a trailer. It seems to get the same positive reaction from anyone that puts it through the paces.

S J & K, Coming up from underneath, it is a "different" angle from everyone else. And it is altogether extraordinarily thought provoking. One thing I cannot help but recall is something Elon said to Sandy in conversation: The best time to buy a new model is with the very first cars to come off the production line, OR much later when big volume production is sorted out. And so we can all be very happy for Sandy, personally, to have a something he can be so very happy with. It if very nice to see the truly great complement that you all give to all the long hard work of the Rivian design engineers. But I cannot help but recall what you would all turn your mind to at Munro if you were tearing it down, and as a very first step the production engineers requiring a die cast or permanent mold casting simplifying everything at the front suspension inner attachment . . . and if only you could that sorts out the whole relationship to the unibody from both sides . . . or all the standard incremental steps before you could think of something so big, or in this case, so small and simplifying.

Was that rivian near or exceeding the weight limits of that lift or juast being safe ? I see the extra supports you placed under it . I have a 4 post 9k and I guess I'd still be weary of putiing over 7k on it as well.

Man, I don't want to be the guy who has change any suspension parts after 5 salty winters. Steel bolts direct into aluminum threads. This is self locking! It is even hard to get the bolt through the aluminum part of the rubber bushing, but out of a corroded aluminum thread... Either you twist the bolt off or you destroy the thread in the aluminum. Greetings from Germany
