There's a new set of Rivian twins on the market, but most of updates on the R1T and R1S are under the skin. But they're very significant!

The new R1T and R1S feature new batteries, new motors, a new electrical architecture, new lighting, and new substantive updates to the interior - Jason flew to Washington to drive them on and off-road.
The new R1 includes infotainment updates that includes Apple Music - but still no Apple CarPlay, which Jason finds to be a wart on an otherwise near-perfect machine.
The other wart is the ride quality - it's still fantastic off-road, and it's better, but it's not up to the level of greatness attained by the rest of the vehicle.
The quad-motor variant rips off a face-melting 2.5-second 0-60 and 10.5 @ 130 mph in the quarter mile - which is impressive. But necessary?
Of course, the Carmudgeons spend some time insulting Subaru drivers (admitting that their experience with slow Subarus might be a San Francisco Bay Area phenomenon) but looking at some national statistics that show that Subaru drivers are the worst of any passenger-car brand.
And of course, they address people comparing their previous Waymo self-driving robotaxi episode experience to Tesla's Full Self Driving. They're not even remotely close.
More of this and more!

WRX is #1 for speeding tickets and BRZ is #5. Which is funny, because everyone thinks our cars are slow. I guess when you're carrying 25mph more through a corner you don't need tons of acceleration to blow past the speed limit. It doesn't hurt that WRX's are really unpleasant to drive at a normal speed for some reason. I find I beat the piss out of my car more than I'd like because zooming around is more enjoyable than the shaking/noise/backpain I get doing 35.

Since I have a car without bluetooth, one with bluetooth but without android auto and one with both: for navigation on the car's screen android auto is amazing. Plus real time traffic. In-car navs are outdated quickly and stupid expensive to update, so that's one case where it's a big plus. Aside from navigation I can happily live without both bluetooh and android auto - but Jason's point of future proofing the car is valid, otherwise the infotainment will end like 2000s DVD nav systems.

You are right, in Texas, and most other states, you can do the posted speed limit while towing. How terrifying this is depends entirely on your tow vehicle, the trailer and how it was loaded. I and many others routinely tow 30 + foot horse trailers weighing well north of 10K pounds at the posted limit. Difference is we mostly do this with 3/4-1 ton rated HD trucks, a lot of us with DRW and you forget there is a trailer back there. A 1/2 ton truck or a truck based SUV is capable of towing, but HD trucks are built to tow. It makes a big difference. What would be a white knuckle drive in an F-150 or an Expedition, is a walk in the park with a DRW F-350.
@texlad04

I especially love the way trailers and truck beds get loaded here. It's so thrilling to avoid a mattress flying out the back or to dodge trade supplies like buckets - especially when you're in a rental - from a rig going 75.

I agree 100% that the recent anti-EV sentiment is driven by government mandates. You didn't hear about it prior to the mandates. Tesla was selling lots of cars during the Trump years. People were happily buying EVs anyway and would have continued to do so given the benefits of driving an EV (cost, performance, etc). Being told that they had to buy EVs and that is all that was going to be sold in the future pissed people off and created people who are now very anti-EV.

I drive a GT86. On the strength of Jason's recommendation I persuaded my wife to test drive a used e-Golf. It's a brilliant car. And in Ireland they were almost all sold with the 17" GTI wheels and UHP summer tires. It took me a while to get the hang of not doing front wheel burnouts everytime I drove it. Nevermind everything going EV, even gas is going digital. I like physical gauges, a mechanical LSD, rowing through the gears. So I don't ever plan to sell the 86 (which has retrofitted wireless carplay). When VW remembers how to do an electric compact, my wife's next car may well be another electric Golf. But it's a case of right tool for the job. The 86 is just about tolerable as a daily, but the e-golf is great for that. The 86 is for twisites and road trips (since I Lexusified it with some sound deadening).

I guess the thing I disagree with y'all on, and it's only because of how vastly different our locations are, but I don't want a dingy... I want my daily commuter to be an experience. Not as much as my "fun" car, I still want creature comforts and to confidently drive in the snow, but I still want to sling it sideways on my daily commute. I still want to get feedback from the car. I want to make my commute fun. I never, ever want a car to just be a transportation device. That being said, I don't live in a city or anything, so I don't deal with stop-and-go traffic or anything. I might feel differently about my daily if I were commuting in a city, but as I have at least enough space to be an absolute hooligan on my way to work, give me a daily that is going to be an experience.

I couldn’t agree more that the whole gas vs EV argument is silly. Both have their purpose and pros and cons, I wish the EV fanboys would understand why EVs don't make good sports cars, and I wish ICE fans would acknowledge the obvious benefits of EVs when it comes to daily drivers. I say this as an enthusiast myself, I've owned several manual transmission sports cars including my current c7 Vette. And I'm telling you, when it comes to daily drivers, a well-executed EV is simply better. We have a Jaguar I-PACE EV as our daily driver. This replaced our 970 Panamera Turbo (both of which we bought used btw), a car that most ICE fans would probably agree is a pretty good daily driver in its own right. And I can honestly say the Jag is better in every single way. I don’t miss the Panamera one bit, neither does the wife. With the Jag, there’s no automatic transmission to get confused around town, never getting into a hot or cold car with preconditioning, there’s insane instant torque, the smoothness and refinement is unmatched (not only because no engine noise but also because the 1000 pound battery insulates you from road noise), the use of space is excellent (small on the outside and big on the inside because no engine), low center of gravity, naturally perfect weight distribution, being able to blow by anyone in traffic anytime, never being in the wrong gear, way more efficient, never being late because I had to stop for gas, no maintenance, quicker than most v8 family cars and more efficient than i-4 family cars, etc etc. And even though on paper the panamera was faster 0-60, in real life around town it’s not even close - the Jag would be gone before the panamera would even get into the right gear. Yes, it can be annoying on road trips - but it's not the end of the world unless you road trip all the time. It's the better car 364 days of the year, and the worse car 1 day of the year. Having said all of that, like I said I'm an enthusiast, and we also have two sports cars (manual transmission c7 corvette stingray and an R56 Mini Cooper JCW, both of which I frequently use for road rallys and autocross), and I have no desire for either of those to be electric. The whole point of those cars is a visceral, loud, lightweight, connected experience with a manual transmission. I know there is a Boxster EV coming soon and I’m sure it’ll be great and smoke my c7 around any racetrack, but I have no interest at all, even as a current EV owner. Sports cars should be gas powered and manual IMO. So as I said, each has their purpose. I don’t see myself ever going back to gas for daily driver, and I don’t see myself ever going EV for sports cars. My point is simple: EVs are better at some things, and gas cars are better at some things. "Taking a side" doesn't make sense, even for enthusiasts. Just acknowledge what the other is better at. EVs dont work for everyone (you need a place to charge and can't road trip all the time etc etc), but if it works in your lifestyle - try it before you knock it is all I'm saying. You might be surprised. And like I said - just because a car is EV doesn't make it good. There are good EVs and bad ones, just like gas cars. For example, I' not a huge Tesla fan. But, the well-executed EVs are, in my opinion, the best daily drivers, if they fit into your lifestyle. ...and this is coming from someone that's currently on his 8th manual transmission sports car (Vette, Mini JCW, 350Z, etc etc). And to be clear - these are my favorite cars, not the I-PACE. But, I have a wife and a kid, and we need something that isn't manual and has a back seat. And in that category, the Jag is by far and away the best we've had.

Great stuff guy's. Totally agree with you Jason when you say just go drive and EV. Just had a rental Polestar 2 to have the EV experience, I'm a dinosaur juice and stick shift man to the end but as a transportation device it was brilliant. This car completely won me over, the tech is great. We will definitely be cashing in the family ICE conveyance for an EV.

I would bet a large sum of money that the reason Rivian is avoiding CarPlay is the same reason other carmakers hate it: ownership of data. Rivian wants to own, mine and sell data. Places with no lines, no maps, where its never been before, and wven in it's currently (rapidly improving) iteration, can drive in 98% of situations without assistance. Yes Waymo works better, with $250K worth of sensors, in a small predefined operating area thats been mapped out with HD LiDAR in advance by acouring vehicles to make 3D maps of every street. So youre right, theres no comparison. The Tesla system is FAR more impressive. Something we'll have in regular cars we can all own, drive ourselves, and with the push of a button put it in fully autonomous mode. Thatll happen soon with Tesla FSD. Waymo will be a neat party trick in a handful of major cities for a long time to come.

The reason that Tesla and now GM’s EV’s don’t have Apple CarPlay, I believe, is because the company wants to estimated the battery’s state of charge at the end of your trip. They would like the driver to set the destination in the in-car navigation system so it can use that information (distance, speed limit, elevation change, etc.) combined with the battery’s pre trip state of charge to calculate the end of trip state of charge. I have an EV now that has Apple CarPlay but does not have the predictive end of trip state of charge the result of which I am constantly doing math & estimates in head to decide which charge station I should target on a trip. It’s like having to remember phone numbers before smartphones times 100000.

On Subarus... I propose Bay Area Subaru drivers are the kind people who walk into a dealership and pick a car off the lot based on color and price without test driving. They want to drive what everyone else has, don't care about what features are good for THEM, but want it at the cheapest lease rate. In Seattle, every ignorant driver has a Prius because they're the most economical way to get around the city side streets. In Denver, everyone wants to be rugged and outdoorsy but their conservative uncle Steven will disown them if they get a Subaru (for Xena lovers), so they get a Jeep crossover. Now, I haven't done any of the backup research, but maybe in "outdoorsy" cities the Jeep dealers make all their money off marked-up Rubicons, so the Compasses and Renegades can go for cheap. Can't afford to lease a new Jeep? Buy a used Hyundai...Since used Subarus command such a high price in Denver, the careless/oblivious drivers looking for a reliable used car tend to buy the Nissan Altima, Hyundai Elantra, or Kia Altima. Maybe in the Bay Area, used Subarus are in a similar price bracket? This would also reinforce my assumptions about car headlights...(thank you for that episode btw) Here in Denver, we are also victim to the advent of 1 out of every 10 used Korean/Japanese cars driving at night with high beams on or headlights off. That's because these cars are also driven by people who just don't put much effort or care into driving, which are the same people who don't/can't put a lot of effort/money into a vehicle purchase. I notice that in many modern Japanese and Korean cars, the interior illumination, including the gauge cluster, changes intensity automatically with the ambient light REGARDLESS of the headlight switch position. Add standard DRLs, and you've got no indication your lights are off in a city environment. One exception to the headlight observation: 2011-2017-ish Subarus. These use the same halogen bulb for DRL and high beam (different voltage for each function). When you put an aftermarket LED replacement bulb in that DRL socket (because they guy at AutoZone said it would last longer), you get high beam at low voltage. Boom: a bunch of Subarus with their high beams on during the day, but not at night when the auto headlights turn on.

You need not tinker with the factory stereo to get Apple Carplay or Android Auto to basically any older vehicle. All you need is power from the cigarette lighter and an AUX input e.g. with a C-cassette adapter. Plug those into a $100 Android tablet from China with Apple Carplay on a non-invasive mount, and uncle is called Bob. This the wireless Carplay solution in my V60 and Miata. I think some of these tablets even support FM output out of the box, if you like inferior audio quality. Why install a tablet on a mount when you can just use your phone, I hear you ask. Because CarPlay UI is optimized to be used while driving.

Jason I love you & the show, but your Apple CarPlay rants are becoming like the Simpson’s Old Man Yelling at the Sky. CarPay is alright but it’s not the magical UI experience you make it out to be. You know what I hate: using Apple CarPlay & then having to get out of CarPlay to do anything else in the car. Prefer Tesla & Rivian integration of Spotify & Phone. Wait till you stop somewhere to text. Also, WAZE isn’t the end all be all, lots of time data is old.

I have to think you have not experienced the latest versions of FSD. To have such an adamant statement that Waymo tech is WAY better and in a whole other category seems either ignorant or disingenuous. I do agree that Waymo can drive truly autonomous and FSD can not. Waymo tech is like car on train tracks (only in limited areas), while FSD is driving 95-99% of the time completely autonomous EVERYWHERE. Waymo has no path to mass production and affordability. FSD is already there.

I second your CarPlay rant, I have a Y and while the excellent maps and Apple Music/Podcasts takes the sting out of no CarPlay (gets me 99% of what i wanted), Carplay would be better. However I think the reason for no CarPlay is not Ego it's $ .. if you're in Carplay the automaker looses all the routing info you put into the car, tunning their range estimates etc. Since Apple ain't going to share the data ... I think it's more about $ ... Tesla, Rivian and others don't want to give it away for free to Apple and Apple won't pay or share back. So we're stuck.

Obviously you know a great deal more about ice cars than I will ever know Obviously you don't understand geofenced Ignorant? Sure thing! Ignorant is an adjective that describes someone who lacks knowledge, information, or awareness about a particular subject. It's like saying, "Hey, this person doesn't know what they're talking about." Being ignorant isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. We're all ignorant about something. It just means we have room to learn and grow. So, if you find yourself being called ignorant, don't take it personally. Just take it as an opportunity to expand your knowledge and become a little less ignorant.

To answer your query.. yes subaru drivers are bad outside of California, it spreads as far as Australia. Where you can find a XV or forester or base model impreza sitting in the fast lane at inconsistent speeds (10 below normally, sometimes at speed but rare and deff not overtaking anyone) However the worst drivers here per capita is Peugeot/Citroen followed closely by VW drivers (mainly amarok or tourag and ofcourse golfs).

Here in south Africa we have a Chinese car called the Beijing x55, it's a great car but only sells 200 cars a month. The competitor sells 1000 units a month, reason being no carplay no android auto, they use a shit screen mirroring software, the dealers claim customers don't care but the numbers and buyers talk.

Rivian not supporting carplay is the latest in the neverending string of the wrong people being in charge when it comes to technology. Right up there with having to manually change the resolution of RU-vid videos to match the resolution of your phone for every single video

Literally never needed ever in my model 3 and likely the same for the rivian because you can’t use Apple car play to route the vehicle for road trips. It requires the GPS mapping to communicate with the cars battery management, etc and set up the best route. All you need is blue tooth. You do not need Car play. It doesn’t do anything your phone can’t already do when connected to Bluetooth.

Those door buttons instead of handles are annoying. Rode two times as a passenger in a Tesla model 3, grabbed the "emergency release" both times as it's more intuitive and the car noted an event on the driver's phone. Had a 2024 Lexus SUV as a workshop loaner and you had to either push in the handle once or pull it twice as an emergency release... So unnatural. At least in the Lexus it was part of rear traffic safety so you neither hit a cyclist nor another car.

Just want to weigh in on the last 10 minutes of the podcast: I think the most ridiculous thing is when people complain about electric school buses. The one vehicle I don't think should be solely diesel is a school bus. Why would you want your kid inhaling all those particulates? And they are loud in the morning and aren't being driven hundreds of miles in a day, even in rural areas. To make a long rant short, if all of the yards had the ability to charge at night, I think 85% of all diesel school buses could be electric and it would only be beneficial. The only exception would be cold, rural states like Montana which might be tricky with range, but they will only get better with time.

Amen on your EV comments, Jason. I agree that the root of it is the government attempting to force them on us supposedly free citizens. I am one of those one-of-each enthusiasts -- a 1986 Porsche 928 S 5-speed and a Tesla. I love both cars!

To each their own but I don’t care at all about CarPlay. Not even a little. I have CarPlay on my Bolt EV and it’s clumsy and way worse than the integrated system on my Tesla. I don’t want my car over reliant on my phone either for navigation or audio. Don’t use or need Waze. That said I’m fine with it being an option if I can turn it off and not have to have my phone to fully use the car. Jason is absolutely correct that at least the older car companies are terrible at software. But Tesla (and I think Rivian and Lucid) are newer and better at it because they are more vertically integrated.

I appreciate those who are silly enough to keep buying new cars so I will have decent cars to choose from 5-10 years from now after they absorb the initial depreciation hit. Except for electric car buyers: I'm not interested in buying something that only has a range of 6 miles now because you didn't take care of it.

I used to have a car with integrated android auto. Not sure how car play is but AA is hot garbage. My particular car was a manual. So you are forced to use the voice dictation for addresses unless the electric parking brake is active. The phone is locked out of google maps entire time it is connected so passengers cant enter addressess either. Just useless. At the end of the 2 years of ownership I learned to preset the destination before plugging the phone in. I now own a 991.1 with no connectivity except reliable bluetooth audio. Life is so much easier.

as a volvo owner, Carplay and android auto are essential. my car has its own data connection. and for whatever dumb reason, if i drive under a bridge, the car's data connection dies, (there's seemingly no buffering room allotted to tidal) and my music stops. And for whatever weird reason, the same thing happens when i tether data from my phone to the car via bluetooth. If i could use android auto, there'd be no problem. but volvo don't want nothin to do with android auto, and i'm not an iphone user (though i'd consider it if the iphone minis came back).

The argument of gas vs electric is ridiculous. No one car, or probably even a million cars is going to make a difference environmentally. I think you landed where I usually land: EVs will overtake gas cars when they are a better product than gas cars. Any attempt to legislate them over gas cars in the US will be politically disastrous.
