Better than a rental car cuz they own it and know it's getting wrecked when they rip it apart. This was an invaluable test you couldn't responsibly do in a rental. And that is from someone who has returned a few rental cars with major damage when I was an idiot kid. But I had the insurance.

Yo exactly, even before the window broke I was saying you should stand there and tell him “a little bit more, a little bit more, OK stop” You can’t blame the forklift driver, someone has to be a spotter.

Exactly! And on top of it Cory (sp?) gives him crap, multiple times ON CAMERA *and* they leave it in the final production version of the video, all while the fort lift driver is not around - basically behind his back. NOT COOL Cory. It's not like the guy did it on purpose. I would only "possibly" fault the fork lift driver for not demanding a spotter before preceding to push the load in further. But TBH, maybe he did and the spotter failed to warn him.

@@chuckm260 100% agreed - a very low blow on his part when he is actually equally responsible - the operator could have demanded a spotter and Cory could have also. They both allowed the work to continue, but the operator was repeatedly admonished for it *publicly* to boot. Which I believe is grounds for a grievance in my area.

FYI: The forklift operator should have spotter. It isn't his fault if the spotter doesn't say anything. I think Andrew did great, all things considered.

I actually think the glass breaking was really informative, the aftermarket barrier definitely failed at it's prime objective. Some of the best tests are when things are pushed to points of failure.

I can't work out what actually caused the break? Was there a point of contact with the glass, or did the barrier transfer the weight in the bed to in some sub-optimal way?

Looks like the fixing bolts on the drivers side were slightly loose and the barrier slid forward?. It's ok, Cory only mentioned it 5 times (😉) Might have been useful if someone had told the guy driving "it's in"?

Cory showed his true colors, he saw how close the forklift operator got to the tailgate and made a concerning noise. He should of been helping guide him into the bed, he had nothing else to do. He had a camera man that could of done it too.

You guys are in such a unique position to provide this kind of content. Most RU-vidrs are only granted access to press vehicles and even if they did purchase them for themselves they would never in 1000 years do what you guys are willing to do because of what your end use is. I realize I’m not telling you anything you don’t know, obviously this dawned upon you and is the reason you created the channel to begin with. I think it is very unprofessional for Cory to hit on Andrew. Cory could have helped with watching out and given helpful signals to Andrew so the tailgate could be closed without breaking the glass. Cory is the manager and is as responsible as Andrew for the broken glass! Very unprofessional!

@@rp9674 yah, you’d be pretty crazy to do that in any new truck. I wouldn’t think many would perform near that well, rubicon jeeps might keep up but I’d bet a short box F150 would be trashed for example

Before you guys tear the Rivian down, you should do a test pulling a trailer that's over the load limit of the R1T as well. I want to see it pull a 22,000 lbs trailer.

Theoretically it could put a 100k but it cant stop it. The truck doesn’t have the payload capacity to put 22k i have no idea why youd want to see that

I think Sandy didn't have enough faith in the capabilities of the Rivian in the start of the off road session, and that's why he hammered it over the logs. The rest of what was caught on video was fine to go a little faster. But logs are just like rocks. If you push too hard, they will push back until you regret your choice of speed. Crawling over the logs would likely left no dents and dings. But hey, kudos for testing it the hard way. Put it to it's limits. What an exciting truck. Ford lightning kind of looks old in the shadow of Rivian. But then, I have not tested either yet.

Use cases for the Lightning and Rivian are totally different.The Rivian is an "Adventure Vehicle"( read: idiots pay $100,000 to beat the sh#t out of it? ), Wherein Ford built an everyman EV pickup truck. You never see long wheelbase trucks familiar with the Home Depot parking lot rock crawling up a canyon....

It was pretty obvious that there was a substantial dip in the logs where he bottomed out. Not sure anything wouldn't have taken a direct hit there. Had to wonder if an all steel Jeep would weather that better. Also made me wonder if any built in 360 camera feature would help you see what you are heading toward. Does anyone put a camera in the undercarriage to scope clearance?

Definely would expect a crawl mode to help you maintain a low speed over the logs. Maybe was not in crawl mode at that point? Pretty harsh obstacle to take on as the first one.

Where did all the dents in the driver’s side come from? Numerous dents in the doors, storage tunnel door, and rear wheel arch in the cider block load test? Those weren’t covered in the damage segment.

That air ride is the best suspension. Big trucks have been using it for years. I have used a forklift to load pallets in the back of pickups. If a pickup bed is not smooth and you have to keep moving the forks back on the load to get it all the way in, there is a good chance that will happen. Also, have to be very careful to not dent the tailgate. Just get out the duct tape and cardboard and cover the back window opening. Hang in there Andrew. lol

Sandy goes away for a trip and you guy already broke the glass. Of course after Sandy went wild on the off road course (not to mention the quad trail) I guess he hasn't much room to judge. I would like a follow up on why the glass broke as it doesn't appear that neither the cinder block nor the guard impacted the glass. From the video it appears the body was distorted enough to cause the glass to crack. Followup definitely needed. Interesting content for sure.

The glass was broken due to the guard hitting the glass. Not because of any body distortions. If it's due to body distortion, then it should've broken the first time they put the cinder blocks on the bed, before moving it closer to the glass.

This was a great test. In order to shut the tail gate you had to get the pallet in beyond that panel that bridges the gap between the tailgate and the bed. I had something similar happen to me. It was a pallet of landscape blocks. The driver wanted the pallet as far forward as possible. The tailgate limits how far you can go in with the forks supporting the entire pallet. So I did what your driver did, backed out and lifted on half of the pallet and pushed it in. It was going well till the pallet broke. No broken window, but lots of crashing blocks!!!

The log run was uncomfortably fast and I had to double-check my playback speed ;), but it certainly showcased what happens when dropping it over a large log with that much inertia. All in all, this thing is quite capable and I was especially impressed with the bed overload as there will be some practical limit to the air suspension. Electric vehicles should make excellent crawlers with their controllable low-end torque.

The RT-1 shows that its roots come from a vehicle which was originally designed for a military application. Withstanding twice the abuse for which the R1-T promises is quite a sight to behold and what you’d expect for something Army spec’ed. I hope the R1-T’s guts aren’t scaled back after the introductory run, or at least remain long enough I can get on the list to get one.

Really impressed with the strength of the standard underbody, considering this R1T wasn't fitted with the $1,700 underbody protection option. I suspect the squatting of the rear shocks under initial load was purely due to the vehicle not being switched on, rather than auto preload adjustment once underway.

after hearing Sandy's impersonation of Dr. Deming, I finally watched a RU-vid video of the Dr. Wow Sandy, you were pretty close, He does kind of sound like James Stewart at a lower register! Glad you had fun 4 wheeling, amazing that the Rivian can do that and then pull a 3.0 zero to 60!!!

That "headache rack" tie down system is the worst engineered I've ever seen. With you guys being a bunch of engineers I would have thought you would know a friction fit with that much weight was a bad idea. Sure made for good content though. Andrew I feel your pain...lol. Every good deed...eh.

I just wanted to thank Sandy and the team for turning me on to the Ford Maverick truck I ordered one right after watching your video. about it. I got the front wheel drive hybrid and I love it i walked out with a brand new truck for 23515 out the door. and I got the XL model only thing I wish it had was cruise control but it only comes at higher trim level. but a after market cruise control is about 300 so I will order that soon.

Go easy on Andrew. Looks like the front of the load was sliding on the bed of the truck, there was a bit of resistance since the fork lift didn't extend the length of the load and it suddenly released and jumped forward.

Yesterday I saw my first Rivian R1T in Boulder, Colorado. It seemed to handle potholes like a champ! We have a lot of EV's here (also plenty of potholes). I'm still waiting to see a Hummer EV or a Lightning.
