Rivian is losing $43K per vehicle. They will be out of business in less than 2 years unless Apple or some automaker buys them up.

I think they may have stirred the excitement level enough they may get more investors, enough to allow them to get these out the door where I think they'll be extremely popular. I think we may be more likely to see Lucid fold before Rivian.

I’m really rooting for Rivian. I think it’s a very compelling brand that could be as disruptive as Tesla if they can really scale up. If the prices are competitive with legacy ICE, they’ll sell all they can produce. I see the R3 being a huge success when they become available. Go Rivian!

I think the R3 is their more important vehicle, it could really be accessible. Its a very compelling package.

Based on size I think the R2 has a bigger market and at that starting price it's accessible enough. Average new car price in the US is like 50k

It depends on how you define important. Lower price obviously means potentially more sales. Which does more to lower carbon footprint. But R2 is likely to be Rivian's cash cow. Same platform. R2 has slightly higher bill of materials but significantly more revenue per vehicle. That means higher profits. VW brand provides most of the sales for VW Group. But Audi and Porsche provide almost all of the profits.

@@alexcooper689 It was a little confusing. I think he said on stage that all motor combinations would have 300+ miles. In the MKBHD discussion, he mentioned that the smallest battery would be 270 miles.

@@alexcooper689They do, it's just the base R2 RWD has a smaller battery and then you can option the larger battery. Pretty sure that's what he said to MKBHD.

I think 270 is an excellent range option. Two years from now, there will be so many more chargers available. And by then they really should be able to give it 200+ kW charging even at the lowest price point.

There's a SW pun in there somewhere, "R2 3 too"? I pre-orderd within 30 seconds of seeing it. A little disappointed with the port being on the right rear, but we'l have to see how Tesla accommodates vehicles with charging ports on the "wrong" side/place.

R2 looks fan-freaking-tastic. It's clean and modern but has an interior that doesn't look like it was built strictly as a cost-cutting exercise (like Model 3 and Y). The proportions are possibly perfect, even better than the R1S, and the size seems way more palatable to me. Just based on photos and videos, I absolutely love it. Let's hope Rivian can hang on long enough to produce it.

For the R3/R3X, using the given 110” (2800 mm) wheelbase and the side-on picture from the Rivian press release I think the overall length is somewhere around 163-165”. That’s like Chevy Bolt EUV size. Very exciting. I’ll be replacing my 2021 Bolt in about 3-4 years and the R3 would be perfect. Good job, Rivian.

Also analyzing the R2 images with the 115” wheelbase it appears to be around 176” in length (around 11” shorter than Model Y or 4” shorter than ID.4) Seems like a good offering that will probably have some great layout to maximize space for that class of vehicle.

Rj explained it was to appease customers who own existing r1t or r1s home charging setups. And to streamline costs due to running hv line's to the front when some of these trims will have single rear motors only. So it cuts cost and wastes less copper. He also claimed the existing v3s work with the ports being high up on the back corner. Eletrek interview with that clown Seth covered it. 👍🏻

Gosh people need to stop whining about Tesla chargers, they are the most outdated DC fast charging network on the entire planet. The R2 will be an 800V vehicle, you can assume that from the battery cells and amount used inside the battery pack, the 4695 are the same dimensions as BMWs "Neue Klasse" battery cells which are produced for BMW in cooperation by CATL. Rivian will likely use a similar battery chemistry and design here. Tesla chargers cannot even power 800V vehicles sufficient enough right now and there will be tons of CCS and native NACS chargers from other manufacturers out there which are solid and truly fast.

The R3 taillight design will have to change or additional lights will have to added. I would choose this over the Model Y just for form factor itself. The full doors are also a preference, so sick of the wind noise in my 3 at highway speeds.

​​​​​@@jamespaul2587 and it is very stale and basic. It has one of the worst specs for the money on the market today, especially the standard range version which most people buy. It is toally outdated at this point and Tesla needs to come up with an 800V architecture, which the Rivian R2 will have, or they can throw the Model Y on the junkyard. The interior is a disaster, too. Consumers, especially in the US, have not enough information and knowledge about technical specs and other competitors on the market. Just a few months ago there weren't many competitors on the US market, outside the US there always have been a ton of great EVs from various manufacturers by the way, but the market is shifting and consumers haven't kept up with the change. Other manufacturers will also have 800V, Hyundai/KIA have 800V vehicles for under 50k since 2021.

@bullshitbingo2259 it was the best-selling car worldwide for many reasons, and with Tesla's continued improvements, it will remain viable for some time. None of the changes you feel it needs are necessary at this point, and many updates will be done with the new platform, not as an update to the current model. The next generation lower cost Tesla vehicle will have numerous production improvements that will be used for future platforms that will replace the current lineup.

Rj already told Seth from electrek and marques that the base 45k rwd trim is below 300 miles range(mk said 270 miles in his video but rj wouldn't confirm he only said base rwd is a bit below 300 miles. I bet a loaded r2 is gonna be 60k+easy. And the r3x will be 55-60k to.

Sure hope they can stay afloat with the rate of cash burn they have and with no growth expectations for 2024...they'll definitely need to raise more capital. Fingers crossed they make it. I'm surprised that wasn't a part of this launch. They previewed it a while ago when they revealed the R2 series as a concept. There's pictures of that, but it seems like they may not do it or it'll just be later.

See geely rd6 and byd mid size ev trucks. Also perhaps the scout evs coming alongside this also allegedly in 2026? The toyoduh leaked mid size ev truck tflev covered and the fisker Alaska might get built by Nissan if they bail out fisker. Plus those rumors say Nissan will use the same fisker platform for Alaska, to build their own mid sized ev truck in the U.S. no less. 👍🏻

@@at0mly I think he's talking about the rear seat windows, not the cargo space windows, and I think the answer is yes. Also, it looks like the window in the rear hatch door does go all the way down à la 4Runner.

I love the R3 though can't tell for sure if it would be big enough for me and I'm not sure on range. The R2 has potential too though I can't get a feel for the size, particularly width. That R3X sounds neat but god what a hideous looking vehicle with those wheels and that color. Ultimately though I don't know if I can get over the headlights. I still find them distractingly ugly. From the rest of the angles though I like the designs and functionality.

I love the flat roof SUV design. They need to produce the R3 right away though. The R2 can wait. Get ahead of the small-ish car market now. By 2027 there will be 20 competitors.

Did RJ mention they won't be building the new plant in Georgia? I really hope they make it, but it doesn't look too good. Rivian and Lucid did things backwards. They should have started out with less expensive vehicles to build the foundation for their current offerings.

I’m stoked for the R3 and R3X. If they can come up with some after market accessories for the R3 then they could have a really cool car for the young generation starting to drive. It will probably also do very well in Europe.

How about a hot hatch CAR. Aren't there enough small stubby SUVS? Haven't people tired of the lesser driving dynamics of tall vehicles yet. I'm ready for hatchback cars and good handling station wagons with more carrying capacity than these small SUVS.

RJ and Frank, please provide some RWD trims at launch. I really cannot afford anything more than 45k and I am not waiting for R3. I am a 2021 & 2023 R1T quad owner through my parents (who have an EEAP vehicle as well). I am 23 year old college graduate that is currently employed by Rivian and living at home temporarily. My configuration will be RWD. I understand that the more expensive ones (Dual + Tri) need to be prioritized for profit reasons. But RWD will be easier/quicker to manufacture. Also a lot of the markets that you will be successful in (especially in the beginning) are warm/non snow states. Those regions will be configuring RWD more and if the goal is to get as many in the market as possible, then maybe RWD should also get some prioritization too.

I think that two years from now this will be a ho-hum launch. IF they were producing these by the end of this year (2024), then the R3/3X in early to mid 2025, PERHAPS that would be OK, but I'm so over these future announcement events. Burned too often I guess. Don't believe the timelines anymore.

It seems like their naming convention is basically the opposite of most car brands, where the smaller number is the bigger model and the larger numbers are the smaller, cheaper ones. Canon does that with it's camera line.

R3 is very cool and attracts the enthusiasts. However, R2 is the volume and more profitable vehicle. Hopefully the R3 will follow shortly after the R2.

The R3 looks amazing. I’m wondering if there will be some Osborn effect for the R2. The R2 would have pushed the limits of my finances but I might have tried to buy one until I saw the R3, which is a better fit for me and probably a lot of others. I’m wondering what the blond lady is explaining to the kid at 5:50. 😂

Love the R2, so I placed a reservation right away. R3 is OK but damn, that R3X looks like a 1980’s VW Golf. Just doesn’t do anything for me.

There is still a large part of the world that drives on the left side of the street - when are we going to see these smaller Rivians in our markets? I’m a Land Rover fan but I put down a reservation on an R1T way back and then had it returned - admittedly both R1’s are too wide for U.K. non highway roads. I’m not wasting my time this time around but as soon as we get word I’ll be selling my 2023 Defender D250 for an electric offroad capable vehicle as todate here in Europe there are no fully electric off-roaders as good as the fossil powered ones.

I was _really_ hoping the R2 would be small enough for my wife to feel comfortable driving, but it's looking too big, still. I'm very much looking forward to the R3 since it looks like it'll squarely fit in that niche of daily-driver plus outdoor adventure that my wife and I are after.

Controversial, but I think the R2 is just too similar looking to the R1S. I wish they had made it look less like a mini-clone and given it more of it's own character. This is why I think, the R3/X is getting all the love.

As a person who lives in the UK I'm really happy that the R2 is coming to Europe as I have loved the r1s and the r1t design but they were American only cars but now they are coming to Europe 🎉

I’m baffled. Why does this take two years to deliver? Why even show it 2 years ahead? Build it now! Two years form now the Chinese will have entered the market and Rivian will be a has-been.

R2 and both R3’s look like same wheelbase almost the same rear doors rear end and roof panels and hatches are the only differences I think as soon as they can get the Georgia plant up and running they could assemble them on same assembly line anytime after January 2025👀

Yes the front looks same. But all else is much more different between models than Tesla. Maybe not great for the supply chain and cost. But appealing to many more

R3/X is weird to me because, i kinda want it?which is weird not because i dislike rivian, but because i hate a deep guttural hate for SUVs and especially crossovers, but the R3/X just looks like a lifted hot hatch and i do love those

I don't get why they wouldn't put the charging port on the back left when they had the opportunity. That's going to make charging on the V3 network a total crap shoot!
