Still a lot to learn on using an EV and towing with the Rivian but it seems to be good. It's all a matter of preference in the end of the day.

Of all the videos of yours I've watched over the last 2 years, THIS was the most important to me. I am so glad you did this. My fully laden travel trailer is maxed at about 7,000lbs. As of today, an EV truck might not be feasible for more than 75-80 miles per charge for me. That would be 3 charges from Reno to my hometown Sonoma coast. On a good day. Still less expensive than Nevada or California gas (still over $5/gal here) so the debate continues. I know the tech will get better in the near future so I'll sit on the idea until that exact trip can get by on just two charges. Thank you so much for this!!!

When they shut down all the coal fired electrical plants how much do you think electricity will cost (if and when you can get it)? Wind and solar ain't going to cut it and forget about hydro with the so called drought. That leaves fission as the only some what reliable 24/7 energy source but there's no way we can build them fast enough. The two under construction in the US are years behind schedule and billions over budget. So where does that leave us?
@aaronrogers1971
@aaronrogers1971 Год назад
@Van Man you sound scared of change, not quite like a real science denier. I do think you need to read more about it because your points are archaic in their substance. We can literally create an unending stream of electricity within our own bodies and that tech itself is starting to finally come into play with our daily components. It's only a matter of time before human energy itself is a social biometric. Get with today, not yesterday.

Night a day difference from the first one. You could see you were stressed at times but at the same time it looks like you reached a comfort level from getting more driving experience with the EV. Looks like you summed it up perfectly. This is not a long range towing vehicle yet. Can you see overlanders setting it up with racks a rooftop tent, slide out kitchen, solar panels, and of course a gas generator. Sort of an apocalyptic survival rig that takes a week to charge after each drive. 😆 If I remember correctly Ford and or some towing systems have weight and detentions inputs for trailers. Also part of blind spot monitoring systems. Also Ram I believe. So Rivian should in theory be able to code similar data. As always thanks for providing us with Edutainment content. 👍🤙😉

I’ve had several Teslas since 2014 and I’ve had nothing but wonderful experiences at charging stations. We have met some very interesting people that eventually became friends. The charge time has decreased incredibly so Tesla owners just don’t spend that much time anymore at charging stations. We are getting a Rivian soon and very excited. As a Tesla owner I agree with the "everyone to themselves" at Tesla charging stations. For me it's not an issue, since most of the places I charge are by coffee and restaurant places. I just go grab food or a drink. Haven't charged at a place outside of city on a long trip, who knows maybe it's a different experience.

While the results maybe are not entirely shocking, the conclusions would not necessarily be obvious to those who have little to no experience with EV towing - that is, probably everyone.... As for Tesla owners -- I think, maybe, many of them have grounds to be kinda grumpy -- just my take from watching a number of Rich Rebuilds videos re Tesla issues.... Thanks for another educational and eye-opening vid Jarrod!

These states that are actively attempting to keep EVs off their roads make no sense to me. Seems it would make economic sense to encourage people who can afford $80,000 trucks to be in your state spending money.

Texas, Tesla's HQ state, doesn't allow people to buy a Tesla in Texas due to franchised dealer laws. What's the deal? Their kids need nannies, private schools, orthodontics, and BMWs at 16. Then there is college and grad school followed by very expensive weddings and let's not forget down payment help for the house in the country. Politicians have expensive lifestyles. Thanks for putting this out there! I have watched a number of long range towing vids like yours using the Rivian and the Lightening. I agree, it's doable but time consuming and stressful. I also agree that the R1T should be fine for short range towing but even that depends on the available charging infrastructure. I have a max pack on order (who knows when I will get it 😀) in the hope that I will only have to stop once to get to my destination since all of my trips are less that 300 miles. One thing that I did learn for sure is that I will need to start carrying a bottle of windex and a squeegee. I am so used to having one available at a gas station stop. Maybe they will add them to the EA stations.😁

Great vid, which only highlights that e.v's for long journeys and carrying/towing heavy loads requires plenty of time to execute. As a commercial application I think we are still quit a few years away. Once the majority have e.v's the issue will be HOW LONG YOU HAVE TO WAIT TO GET A FREE CHARGING STATION and hopefully it actually works. Keep up the great vids.

Great video Jared and a real world test. A few minor points that would have been good to have in the video. First, especially speaking as a Canadian (or someone outside of USA) it would have been nice for you to show the route on a map of your trip. Second, it would have been good to note the wait time for charging, either as a total time for all stops, or an average time for each stop (I know you noted you made ten stops). The big issue is certainly the extra time for charging and even more of an issue is RANGE ANXIETY, especially towing a package. Thanks again Jared!

For me it ticks all three. I want to go with a scamp (type) camper and will go with an EV pickup. Not the Rivian. She's purdy, but out of my price range. I want to make lots of stops along the way, and go at a slower pace. I am a few years out yet, so things will probably advance even more by then. & Did you do film the trailer at all? I’ll do a video on this soon enough that it’s not efficient enough for car companies try and do that. It’s all about math, even if you could fit 2000 watts of solar on a car (which is a lot and likely closer to fitting 1000 watts). Most EV’s are about 100kWh and charging at 2kWh it would take about 2-4 weeks depending on sun conditions, time of year, etc. What I could see happening is more efficient foldable solar panels that you could plug into the EV only if you were out camping far from civilization. But that would be for “worst case” thing

In response to your note at time stamp 14:00: The range is not just the weight of what is being towed, the wind resistance needs to be apart of such calculations. Rivian would need to know details about what is being towed, that can be provided by the trailer mft., to make such a adjustment on range.
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci Год назад
I understand that. But it could give more accuracy with knowing weight. It will adjust is you have drag so I understand that much
@mike123abc
@mike123abc Год назад
@@JarrodTocci It would be great if you could name the load, and it remembered it so that it could do the calculations based on past towing of that load. After the first charge you could say still towing the same load and it would then "know" how the range is affected by the load instead of always going to 50%. If you had a boat, a trailer and a camper you could have all 3 in memory and select it (or a new load) to get prior range experience with the load for calculations. It should get quite good at estimating after a while with a frequent tow.

Since this video did Rivian make the towing weight software update you suggested? It seems to me that towing a teardrop with any EV for 100 miles and then having to stop and recharge for an hour would be a pain over a long trip. Drive for an 1 1/2 hours. Stop for 1 hour. Repeat. EV battery technology is still too nascent to be used for towing and living life on the road.

You know the reason Tesla owners don't chat when charging at the Superchargers is because the car charges too fast to even find time to mingle with other people charging specially after you eat and take your bathroom break 😂😂. Alot of Tesla owners also don't want to waste their time at the charging stations where they could be somewhere else.

I’ll stick with my gas 22’ frontier that gets 511 miles on a full tank. Stoping 10 times on a 1000 mile trip is not for me, plus doesn’t seem like your saving anything charging the truck over someone in a gas truck.
@rjthomasindyusa
@rjthomasindyusa Год назад
It would cost me about $240 to drive my Sprinter 1000 miles @ $4.75 per gallon. I would have to stop on the road twice (plus my initial fill upon leaving). What is the benefit? It’s like your purposely inconveniencing yourself and adding a middle man.
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci Год назад
It’s not about that. I went over numbers for the sake of going over them but not try to convince it’s less expensive. There are a lot of benefits to having an EV and it doesn’t mean cost of fuel. And if we are splitting hairs then I do believe in long run it’s less expensive to have an ev over gas/diesel but to each their own
@rjthomasindyusa

@@JarrodTocci I appreciate the metrics and inside look at EV ownership. I think they are great and have a purpose if you stay local. I also like the idea of being to charge your vehicle off of a solar bank. That being said it doesn’t make sense for people who regular travel long distance. I appreciate your transparency.

I started towing my work trailer and jet ski with my EV UTV since it pulls just like my truck. Obviously not on public roads but seeing how much you had to stop and charge; i won't be investing in an EV for any long hauls.

could you maybe get an adapter that would allow you to use tesla's infrastructure?
@bonnsin720
@bonnsin720 Год назад
honestly, screw the electric truck just get a normal truck that's arguably way cheaper for a way, better truck, yes, gas is expensive, but it's way more efficient than having a set at a charging station all night, which adds a lot longer too already almost a full day drive time trip

There is a story out there now about a 17 year old on Florida that has invented an electric motor that does not use very expensive rare earth magnets, has higher torque at lower rpm and, is as much as 37% more efficient than the standard current designs. Motor, materials, and battery tech rapidly improving and the infrastructure is catching up. Soon, petro propulsion could go the way of the dinosaurs which, is pretty ironic if you think about it. Just not yet.
@billdaggett7911
@billdaggett7911 2 месяца назад
The current EV motors are 90% or more efficient. It's impossible to be 37% more efficient since 100% efficient is the limit. AC Induction motors don't have rare earth magnets and have been aroundnfor over 100 years. Motors won't be the innovation to fix the ailments of EVs. Energy storage density and charge time are the issues. The Hydrogen Fuel Cell is the answer AFTER low cost electric power generation is available. Until then, EVs arent the answer.

Sorry Jarrod, but that guy is totally wrong. I have a 2013 Tesla Model S, and every time I go to a supercharger, people talk to me. Maybe because I have an old-school Tesla that gets free supercharging for life, and It's wrapped in a beautiful liquid copper. I never have to worry about a supercharger not working either. I can't wait for my Cyber Truck. Nothing is going to come close to that truck over 500 miles of range.

@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci Год назад
In North America, the terms 220V, 230V, and 240V all refer to the same system voltage level. However, in the 1950’s most of the 110v has been switched over to 120v. Sometimes I get caught saying 110 by mistake but honestly they are the “same.” And I hang around a lot of old school electricians so a lot of them say 110 so maybe I picked up on it. In the end it’s really no big deal and surprised I wasted this amount of time writing this
