Hello, and Welcome.
Having arrived at Quebec City Airport late evening we spent our first night in Canada nearby. In the morning we collected our rental vehicle and set off under clear blue skies to explore. Making our way along the south bank of the St Lawrence River we first break our journey at Riviere du Loup. After coffee on the Rue Lafontaine we took a walk around the impressive Chute de Riviere du Loup. After a few quick images of the falls we were again on our way along the St Lawrence pausing in villages and at scenic views alongside the ever widening river. The highlight of the day was a stop at the Jardins du Metis/Reford Gardens. This wonderful place was created by Elsie Reford. Her great passion for plants led her to overcome the difficulties of this remote, inhospitable location and eventually to bring into being one of the most northerly gardens in the Americas. The site is almost 200 miles (300km) north east of Quebec City in what was a forest of Firs, remote from any nursery or other source of plants. Her incredible devotion and determination has created something wonderful to enjoy. We took our time here. Making the most of the long hours of daylight we continued to a beautifully located overnight stay on the edge of Ste Anne des Monts at the Auberge Chateau Lamontagne. This delightful Bed & Breakfast sat on an elevated bluff overlooking town and river where we sat a while enjoying a glass of wine as the sun set feeling well satisfied with our first full day in Canada.
