If there is a part of the 3D modelling process I wish the computer would "just take care of", its UV Unwrapping. Some people love this process, others (like myself) do not. Thankfully there is a "magic wand" solution that will just take care of the process for you... RizomUV. It's available for Windows, Mac and Linux and there is a full functioning free trial version available.

@@kresnadialI mean, it's not cheap, but I don't think it's an unreasonable amount, it's on par with other similar commercial 3D software. Like I've seen some software asking for $2000 for perpetual, that's more what unreasonable looks like imo. Companies don't price stuff for "anyone", they price it for freelancers earning money with the software commissions You can always just pirate it too, like I'm doing right now haha

Nice video dude! although at 4:56, you'll notice that some of your islands don't have a checkerboard, that's because they're not actually unwrapped. You didn't make any cuts either by hand, or by using the automatic seam tool. So essentially those islands are 3D shapes being packed. At least that's what it looks like.

No love of being tied to pay for yet another subscription software. Less so when the task it does is just something I don't like doing, not something it can do but I can't. It looks like a WAY faster way to UV Unwrap a model, but it also is another program to learn, and you get dinged for every month you don't use it. That and, with the things with adobee, I'm staying away from any company who is doing licenses just to use their program. Thank you a ton for showing off not only how the program works, how good it is, but also the downside you knew others would not like. That does take a level of "honor" that I don't get to see that much these days.

Here we go again... It's not subscription software for Indies. It's either, perpetual = 149.9 euros to buy outright, with a years worth of updates, and you can use it until the end of time, you own it. Or, Rent-to-own = 14,90 euros a month, for 10 months, at which time it converts into a perpetual license. Aka, you own it, forever.
@fadepanther6224
@fadepanther6224 2 дня назад
@@RizomUV While that is fair to note, (The RU-vid Video said as much), My worry stems from how easily companies, indie or not, have shown to change their license agreements. Sorry if I come off as saying it is an subscription for everyone. That wasn't the intent but that is what it sounded like. My apologies for that. But what keeps the company behind the License from changing the agreement of what can be used under that License? (Adobe, Unity, WotC have all burned my trust in legal things as they all have tried to do something very nasty. Adobe actually would have gotten away with it if they didn't push people to agree to the terms of service.) So, while perpetual license means I own the license forever, it doesn't sound like I own the program. I'm no lawyer but that isn't a reason for me to "just trust me bro" for anything. More so for that chunk of change. And only a year's upgrade time. Which does hint that for further upgrades I'd need to pay more. I get your trying to sell the product, but I have been burned, and scammed, one too many times to just nod and agree. (MIND YOU! I'm not saying this is a scam at all. Far from it as it looks like a fantastic program)
@RizomUV

@@fadepanther6224 I get the concern, especially with everything that's been going on at the moment with other companies, and what they're doing. But, with that said, we are not them. In fact, I was looking on in amazement at a certain company (not naming names), thinking "Why on earth would they do this? did they think 'how can we kill our business overnight?'". So, let me lay out where we are, in regards to all the stuff you've seen over the last few months... 1. If you buy our software as an Indie user, you own it, and you own it forever. You get updates for 12 months, after which, you can either... • use the last version of RizomUV available before your license expired, until the end of time. • Or, you can choose to extend your license at any time, to get access to updated versions of RizomUV. • Simply put, we are not believers in the philosophy of "You'll own nothing, and be happy" 2. Our software doesn't spy on you. No telemetry is sent by our software anywhere, there is no network traffic from RizomUV at all. Hell! Our software doesn't even contain the code necessary to do that. We have no interest in this whatsoever. 3. Our terms of use aren't mental. Using our software, does not grant us a license to use or publicly display your work. As stated above, we don't even have access to your work, and quite frankly we don't want it. Maybe I should make a PSA Video on our RU-vid channel about this 🤔 It might come across as "shots fired", but at least everyone will know where they stand with us, and for the lolz obviously 😅😅

The only software that comes to my mind for its ease of use for UVs is Headus UVlayout . I believe it was one of the first ones out there that were known as '' pelting '' or something like that ? Basically is cloth simulation to cut and stretch uvs. Its still probably the fastest thing . As much as I like the idea of auto uvs, no software knows which part of a object needs to be big and how to cut it so that you can end with a bigger piece instead of 3 or more pieces . Manually is still the way to go. The only way for auto uvs to take first place is , if we all started using high res textures without caring of how much space they take on a asset . Now, a AI that can detect shapes and actually makes the correct cuts is something to worry about .Fingers crossed no one makes it XD.

@SianaGearz 2 дня назад
@@khena6784 Because technical art is to a small extent about goodness and objective factors, and to a large extent about INTENT. Intent is inherently human, not something a machine may possess. You train a machine learning system, you give it a loss function, and it will create a net, effectively a function, that approximates the minimum of the loss function, so effectively a maximum of a quasi inverse "objective" quality metric. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter nearly as much as what you want to actually DO with the model later. When someone says, model should be like this, you need to do this, you need to do quads, you need to do flow, you need to set seams thusly, these rules are made to be broken. By intent. They aren't as much rules as general guidelines unless your intent says you need to do it otherwise. You can't write a function that accurately guesses what you will want to do in the future, that's the problem. The time expense is when you at first don't know what your intent is and need to go back and inject intent back into your work. Otherwise if we're speaking UV unwrapping yo let LSCM rip throw a random seam along a loop and it's done, 12 seconds flat, like it's not like we don't have UV automation even in basic software. We have a lot of other automations as well, we have quad flow automation too, we have any kind of automation you can think of... it's just that lacking intent, they are always very limited in usefulness.

You just have to hit the ballpark, your texture painting tools can deal with the disparity in texel density, and a little bit of sharpness loss on valleys won't be noticeable either, or if there is, well if you're targeting PC, console, you can afford a tiny bit of anisotropic sampling, not too much, just a little. Islandy unwraps aren't great for rendering pipeline either, since the vertex is split and cannot be reused. 95% of technical game art and why we endlessly fiddle with UVs and seams and topology flow and whatnot is not about goodness, it's about INTENT. Aka, you own it, forever

Welcome to the world of professional modeling, where Rizom is an industry standard, and has been for a good decade. Before it, there was Headus UVLayout. But teaching others to just use auto-unwrap is actually a bad advice. Most of the time, you *WANT* UVs to be distorted, but to be distorted in a very specific way. E.g., the trunk should be unwrapped as close to a perfect rectangle as possible, respecting TOPOLOGY, not a relative polygon size. You'll know why as soon as you'll get familiar with in-engine texture filtering and compression. Thankfully, Rizom allows you to do MUCH more than just a single-click unwrap.
@RappinAcoustic

Automatic UVing is only good for props. If you do the groundwork and do proper UV's you can save a ton of headaches down the pipeline.
@Potatinized
@Potatinized 2 дня назад
simpler models that can be done within 2 weeks probably worth the price. Otherwise you'd be using it only twice for that price. but then again, those simpler models aren't that hard to unwrap. Maya's UV tools are good enough to deal with it within an hour or so. Seems like they're targeting junior modelers.

I'm really confused about the hate over the pricing model (at least if you stay indie). Once it's perpetual and if your happy with the version, you don't need to pay anything else. Would people rather have only the $150 only option?

Thank you! I really appreciate that. The comments seem to be full of people that are utterly confused about our pricing. The subscription model only applies to companies that earn over €100,000 euros a year. For indies you buy it outright and own it forever.

Bro, if people here (your audience) don't know what UV mapping is.... they are in the wrong place, your not teaching anyone in this video what UV mapping is. Don't pander to an audience that ain't there- or pander to your actual audience and give us a timestamp to skip the filler/fluff.

For everyone that is bound say AI should do UVs I have a bone to pick. You clearly don't understand how UVs work and what do they imply in realtime rendering, PTex solved UVs years ago, it simply eliminates UVs completely and yet, you don't see PTex being even mentioned for games like ever, there are good reasons for it, and those same reasons also how you should build your mesh UVs, using automatic solutions like this or blender or Maya or any other software might be okay for quick prototyping or for very small projects where quality and performance are not really relevant. Adding AI to this problem won't solve much because the problem is about choice, both artistically and technically, unless we somehow figure out how to tell the AI the context of what we want then it will never give a result that you can accept without needing to do changes.

"Rent to own" isn't a bad model. Personally, I have no problem with a developer crafting a tool and I pay for it - I wouldn't expect to walk into an Art shop and walk out with free (open source) artist tools unless I was happy with a prison sentence. I know some people despise the idea of paying for software but someone has to give up their time and skills to create a tool I might want to use.
@josephbrandenburg4373
@josephbrandenburg4373 4 дня назад
What people despise isn't the pay but the license. I don't think software licenses are a necessary evil to allow devs to get paid... I think they're a necessary evil because they're established and because the big tech companies have bought a lot of laws to make sure it always will be. But anyways the reason arguments happen is because both sides are right. You should pay for the software if you can and you should have software freedom with any software you have.
