I think that every locksmith should tear one down just to understand it better. They're not going to disappear any time soon. Whenever I get some that are used I reset them to all zero cuts the hard way. Only takes a minute and it's good practice. Great video Jason. Thanks for the time, effort and expertise!

Still have my apprentice following. Seems like watching it in video reaches him better than in person

I'm one of those weird guys that like these locks. I have three of them on my own house. I invested in one of those Lock Tech Smart lock readers that has been great for lockout calls when these come up, I have tried the re-set cradle, but hated it. You pointed out an important step I was missing when using and I see why I screwed up a couple of cylinders with it. 😬

Well Jason you shown us how much better the old style KWIKSET pinning are. Personally I've disassembled 2 of them and redone them just to learn the guts of them.

Love the way you point out you are pushing the face of the plug away from the key. NOT PULLING THE KEY OUT! lol I’ve learned that lesson the hard way more times than I’d like to admit.

Great tip with the Lock Shot! I'm going to need to find the Canadian equivalent. I never get them back together on the first try. I have a few of the Schlage smartkey plugs to play with. Easy to tell which is which because the Kwikset the rekey slot is on the left and Schlage rekey slot is on the right (but only if the plug is properly installed 🤣🤣🤣). Thx again for the Video.

Great video! Just had my new apprentice tear one down last weekend. We went through all 3 methods as well. Btw, the thumbturns on a lot of these newer Kwikset knobs will not spin freely until it’s back on the knob spindle. It’s because of a feature they added to assist with timing the knob when a customer is doing initial install and if you force the thumbturn to spin like if you were trying to “time” it on the spindle the plastic piece will break and fall out. It doesn’t affect any of the functionality, just ease of install for diy customer. Thanks for sharing!

I haven't seen this yet, but good to look out for. So what happens if you break off the plastic antilock piece? Does the thumbturn spin freely as previous design, or fubar?
@odinslockllc
@odinslockllc 2 года назад
@@zach2763 I UPDATED MY COMMENTS BECAUSE I WAS INCORRECT. I messed around with the knobs to better understand what that plastic was doing and changed my other comments. With the black plastic broken, the knob will still work. The design forces you to unlock the knob from the interior side. Some older Schlage’s are the same way and people would lock themselves out. The knob was redesigned to make you unlock the thumbturn to turn the knob and open the door. Hope that doesn’t confuse you.
@zach2763
@zach2763 2 года назад
@@odinslockllc Thanks for the thorough description. Makes sense. If people can, they will absolutely lock themselves out! That newer Kwikset antilock feature sounds good in theory, but plastic internals... ugh.
@odinslockllc
@odinslockllc 2 года назад
@@zach2763 see my updated comments. I figured out I was incorrect. That plastic piece is to help first time installation as customers wouldn’t know what to do if it wasn’t “timed” nor would they have the Kwikset fork tool. The knob still functions correctly with the plastic broken or missing as not needed if someone knew how to rotate the spindle to line it up. Sorry for the confusion.

It's funny when I visit friends at apartment complexs and constantly see maintenance ripping out smart key locks and replacing the whole lock with another smart key lock instead of just rekeying the locks. The locks aren't bad because sometimes maintenance leaves the old locks behind.

The series has been great so far. It makes sense with all the Kwikset first -- and good knowledge to have since it's so omnipresent. I'm looking forward to moving on to more commercial hardware like Corbin Russwin, Sargent, Schlage, etc. I learn something new from your videos all the time though.

You’re going to love the vessel driver. The shape of the #2 Phillips is very similar to the Klein so it fits nicely into the foreign screws. Especially when working on a panic device that has been sprayed down with oil, that knurled shank comes in handy.

After having played with disassembling a Shartkey, they're not bad to reassemble and re-learn without a tool. Definitely more difficult than pin tumbler, though!

I got on on my key ring. Only meet one person other than me that does. We both worked at property management company, more like a hvac guy that has to do locksmith, plumbing, electrical,drywall and a smidge of framing.

These are the locks that got me into locksportery. I've never bothered with the reset cradle thingy, not really necessary, but certainly makes it easier, and you don't need to know how it works if you have one of those to use

You did good to reassembly the "smartkey" cylinder without dropping out all the sliders / wafers (except, of course, for forgetting your ball & spring -- NOT a "ball & chain", ha, ha) -- not recommended for the average homeowner to pull apart the plug, but OK if you like frustration!

Ya we do low voltage stuff and put in one of the automated deadbolts and my boss messed up and pulled the key or the reset tool out and it didn't work with any keys and I was able to disassemble it and get it working again

Greetings! all the way from Las Vegas Nevada. Big fan of the channel. How do you guys feel about using graphite vs Liquid lubricant on a pin lock. My boss said to me when i was first starting off a few years ago. "If you ever spray ANY liquid lubricant in a pin lock, You're fired! We live in the desert, use graphite!" Ever since i don't even make eye contact with a WD40 bottle. How do you guys feel about this?
@bstrickler
@bstrickler 2 года назад
No graphite here in AZ. PTFE/Teflon based lube. Never use a wet lube (oil) on a lock. Too many people like to load up on the graphite, and kill the lock that way.

Yes, in a dry climate you can follow orders. Anyplace else graphite is your enemy. (Team Triflow)

I think everyone knows how I feel about graphite 😂 Here is MS where we have ridiculous humidity the stuff can clump up before it even settles

Are the Lori deadbolt with double cylinders suppose to be centered inside the door, as In both lock cylinders being the same size should have the same thickness security ring and spacers so each cylinder is spaced out equally from the door so the mechanism inside the door is centered and nothing binds?
@selock
@selock 2 года назад
yes, assuming the bolt is centered in its hole correctly. Sometimes especially on wood doors if someone didn’t drill the edge bore straight it will cause the bolt to veer to one side But same thickness cylinders and correct prep, yes they should have same thickness spacers
