RMAF 2011 Noise Shaping Sigma-Delta Based Dacs, Martin Mallison, CTO, ESS Technology
[This video was orig. uploaded to RMAF RU-vid channel, some time back, but has since gone missing].
The technology presented, ca. late 2011, is now dated, and possibly surpassed by several other technology companies (AKM, AD, Cirrus, etc.), and maybe even ESS themselves.
Note that DAC architecture (sigma-delta, R2R/ladder, etc.) is only part of the story; implementation being possibly much more important.
A companion video -- "RMAF11: Digital Jitter and Volume Controls" -- on the official RMAF RU-vid Channel, is here:

Despite being 7 years old, the explanation is quite reasonable to understand the sonic superiority of the ESS DAC devices, especially the ES9219C, in portables. Thanks to Mr. Joseph Wan, from ESS, for indicating this work.

I prefer CS over ESS.

16 bits cannot give -120dB as on the chart in red at 12:00. -96dB is a minimum. So, I think ESS tries to represent their products better than they are )

96 dB is the maximum dynamic range a 16-bit DAC can have. Although the graph reaches down to -120 dB, the maximum was -60 dB, only spanning 60 dB of dynamic range. You would be right if the graph was in dBFS, where the largest output is at 0 dB and the curve shown would require 120 dB of dynamic range. But he said -60dB was a millivolt, implying it's not dBFS. It's possible that that DAC was some small-signal kind and only outputted a few mV maximum, then the graph is completely possible.

This guy can’t prove his R2R DACs are better with measurements or a double blind test. You just have to believe.
