Hi everyone. In this episode I take a look and use the amazing headphone DAC from RME. This thing pack a serious punch. Enjoy come find us at americanaudioco.uk
Been mastering on this for over a year, probably over 100 masters for clients. I love it. I sold my Hilo and Merging Anubis, I love it that much. I have worked exclusively on headphones and DAC for mastering for three years after over 25 on monitors. The combination of this and my headphones (from Audeze) is more than enough for me to do my job. Thanks for the video.
Indeed a linear power supply is a must, by the way, I no longer use the preamplifier. The loudness function works perfectly, you hear no difference if you turn the DAC up or down, 50 dB or 90 dB sounds exactly the same, only the sound pressure changes
There is more than shielding and grounding with XLR connections. Balanced audio has circuitry on both ends to reduce noise based on phase cancellation. But yes, I agree balanced audio does not always provide better audio quality. As a matter of fact the added balancing circuitry can add distortion. Balanced audio is only necessary for longer cable runs. Another thing to be aware of is the operating voltage normally differs between balanced and unbalanced signals so generally it is best to match inputs and outputs.
And when something is good like this review you don't need to ask for a like, because you will get it anyway. Thanks for a basic menu walkthrough, I'm going to try it within a few days :)
I know its a DAC with some AMP in it. But I read that the power is limited so as not to damage low impedance headphones. Can it drive (reletively) high impedance headphones such as the HD 800S or will they sound under-driven and bright?
