Rick visits the Chapman's factory in Markdale, ON. Look for Rick's Blueberry Pie ice cream, in support of Plan Canada's Spread the Net, in your grocer's freezer this March!
I used to work there and I hated my job mostly because it's factory work, but I can say first hand that it's a great family running it. Have a lot of respect for them because they could have moved to Toronto or somewhere else after the factory burned and reopened there and lowered wages and such. Markdale is a small town of just over 1000 people and only stays populated today because of Chapmans employment, so Chapmans saved the town of Markdale by staying there.
Actually no they couldn't. Chapmans ice cream wouldn't get off the ground in the city like they do out in the rural community area. Chapmans has the benefit of ruling with an iron fist when it comes to being one of the few only big employers in the area that has one of the highest turnover rates too cause they know they'll find someone else easy enough when anyone can do the job. The city nonetheless most want union and chapmans dont want that. many other benefits chapmans dont provide which makes it easier for them to stay in Markdale.
And during the Pandemic when employers were giving temporary wage increases to employees for working in 'high risk' Chapman's told the employees that they were all keeping their wage increases permanently.
omg lol, you're hilarious! we bought a carton of plain chocolate last night and i left it on the counter to soften, but forgot it for an hour and it was fully melted, just a carton of sweet creamy soup. everyone was so mad at me, ugh. we've been having a major sundae craving at my house all winter, we've never bought so much ice cream. besides Chapman's, we're also loving President's Choice, tho' it's much more expensive. the pumpkin pie flavour, yum!
This is one great company - with absolutely delicious products! I've been a fan of Chapman's for years and years. After their devastating fire, and the way they 1) treated their employees and 2) have stayed totally Canadian, I love 'em even more! These are real true Canadians. I push their products all the time, b/c they are great and also b/c they show the real Canadian spirit. :-) May you triple your business and never sell out!!
I can appreciate the mindset of a company that went out of their way to make sure their employees wouldn't miss paycheques when their place burnt down. Used to have this brand often when I was a young tyke living in Ont.
This is my favourite ice-cream company. They talk about the fire at 4:30 and show what a wonderful family they are. The other thing they don't talk about (though I wish they did) is that they have a nut-free line of ice-cream for people like me, nut-anaphylactics. It's one of the few ice-creams in the world that I can eat without fear of my throat closing. Thanks Chapmans.
I love blueberries as much as I love Rick Mercer, so I bought that ice cream in a flash, and wasn't disappointed. Chapman's also makes some amazing frozen yogurt.
What a great statement on Canadians and our "sticktoitveness"! Chapman's is a favorite in our home! Way to go Chapman's!!! "It's like Winnipeg in here!"
My teacher showed my foods class this video today, and I was really invested in it all was going well until the end. Oh my god the ending. It caught me so off guard I couldn’t help but burst out laughing and I had to go to the bathroom to excuse myself for a bit. Now it’s past midnight and I can’t stop fucking laughing when he climbs out absolutely covered head to toe in melted chocolate. My stomach hurts from laughing so hard. I’ve tried to get some sleep but every single time I close my eyes my mind plays back this one scene and it always without fail makes me break out into laughter. I don’t even know if this video is real or not just because of this damn ending its so uncalled for for absolutely no reason 😭
I like how they got around that not made in Canada because of the coco crap by simply putting a maple leaf flag on their ice cream, you just know it's made here.
Chapman’s I’ve Cream. Best French Vanilla. Best Cookies N’ Cream. Best everything. And it is SOO good. Plus, it’s not Breyer’s where you leave it overnight and it’s still frozen with oil oozing out of it. Move over Ben & Jerry’s. I’ve got a new favourite 🇨🇦🍦❤️
I saw that video also and was shocked. The Breyer's ice cream had not melted during the entire night on a table outside of the refrigerator. During this COVID fiasco I have been buying groceries for low-income families and have never purchased Breyer's ice cream, regardless of sale price. Thanks for the reminder.
I have Chapman's Salted Caramel Ice Cream in my freezer but I usually always have Chocolate Caramel Cup Ice Cream which is my favorite. You should try it, eh?
Absolutely a great company I buy chapmans when I can. Anyone else love the last little bit. Who wouldn't want to do that although I have to wonder what would happen to the chocolate involved in that bit.
It was probably a batch of chocolate that couldn't be used for some other reason, as normally That chocolate would be hot to keep it from setting, but since Rick jumps in its obviously not.
God I miss the Mercer Report every week........................I know it was comedy, but within the jokes were some very important and direct questions to catch our MP's off guard. Their reaction to the questions said much MORE than their scripted responses to it.
