I am a veteran. I know for a fact all of that defense budget does not go to soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen!!! It breaks my heart when I see servicemembers at food banks and have to use food stamps to feed their families. We are literally laying our lives on the line only to live in substandard housing and not have enough to eat.
Anyone who knows anything about the military knows the money definitely doesn't go where it should be going. It's going into rich corporations' pockets!!! They don't even try to hide the waste either. It's freaking amazing some of the stuff that goes on and no one is held accountable! ZIP!
I am a military retiree, and have never used any social programs with a family of four. When people don't budget with their pay, you are bound to see beggars.
Heh I’m 38 and while my debt isn’t as high as some, the 20k relief will basically half it. 20k is also all the liquidity I have right now , and business insider had a good piece on missouris bullshit case, which gave me some hope.
I had student loan debt of 10K back in the 80s, about 10 years later I was supervising someone with 80K debt and I wondered how is she going to get out from under?
@@suomynona4607 - how about Nursing! A 42 year-old I know has approximately $70K of loan debt still after15 years! And... not even an RN -- still more courses & $$ if they go back to complete those requirements for an RN degree -- more still if they get a Masters degree! Several friends have closer to &/or above $100K debt!
An audit and decent pay for people who are actually doing the jobs seems like the bare minimum for reform. Why is this even a question? Why has grift of billions by the military-industrial complex just taken with a shrug? And why do we keep sending billions to companies who are doing crap work and charging enormous prices, far beyond a fair profit?
@@sundayoliver3147 campaign contributions? Kickbacks? Luxury vacations? Who will present a bill to stop contributions? A bill to do away with the electoral college? A bill to allow we the people to actually be heard?
Before they are veterans. We had service members deployed and war zones and their families were shopping with food stamps and sending basics because the limitations and inferior quality of what the US government supplies. Low pay plus requiring active duty to pay for their own gear. .
How dare we ask our veterans for ANYTHING! We don’t even pay them enough to simply eat, without food stamps! The are fighting for our life bed, our freedoms, but yet they have to penny pinch. And we as a country aren’t embarrassed YET?💙
It is amazing how many people that voted against removing student were recipients of PPP loans they did not have to pay back. And those amounts were more than the debt of most students.
they don't give a shit. they drink their own bullshit. yeah why should my taxes pay for kids to go to school? well why should my taxes pay for your shitty luck with the economy? HEY THOSE ARE MY TAXES I DESERVE THEM.
The WORST PART of the defense budget? This doesnt go to the soldiers. I was a military spouse for 15 years and it cost us money for him to serve for that time. Their salaries have barely changed at all and they make nearly nothing. This money doesnt go to the boots on the ground at all. It is sickening!!!! And at the end of his drill, they used to THROW AWAY PERFECTLY GOOD FOOD. My ex brought home CASES of fruit and many other goods. I took the food and donated them to people who needed them instead of letting them throw them in the trash! They have a budget per solider for meals. When he was on special assignments they CHARGED US FOR MRE meals and he didnt eat them, he would go out to eat, so we paid DOUBLE for his food.
My great son, creative, a teacher, now in his 40's, was showered with student loans in his youth, had no clue of the implications. Has paid tens of thousands but never in his life will get out of horrendous student debt.
@@suomynona4607 Teachers actually used to be paid decently and have good benefits, until we started defunding public schools. That was probably what the guy in his 40s saw as a kid. But then funding for schools started crumbling. For a few decades, teachers have had to pay out of their own pockets for school supplies and even food for their kids, and their pay has not gone up commensurate with living expenses in most areas. Also, there are people who become teachers because they really really want to teach kids and are good at it, and see their lives as more than making money to live on.
MAGA doesn't want middle class and poverty to come out from that, and make something better, they just care about the rich, they could care less about us middle class , why ppl still keep voting for MAGA is beyond me. We need to vote them out
fun fact: Sen. Joe Biden was one of the few Democrats who sided with credit-card companies that were trying to make it harder for people to declare bankruptcy and in 2005 supported the bill that stripped students of bankruptcy protections and left millions in financial stress, and right after his family heavily invested in credit card institutions
elite career politician millionaire joe biden and democrats in congress removed the tax hikes and policy affecting billionaires and their billionaire corporate donors last minute from the inflation reduction act because many dems would not vote for otherwise
It is time for the Congress to do indepth cost-benefits ANALYSIS on Government budget on defence contractors. The defence contractors are obviously taking the govwrnment for a ride . In short the government is being conned by defence CONTRACTORS. THE DEFENCE BUDGET MUST BE CRITICALY ANALYSED AND EVALUATED IN TERMS OF COSTS AND BENEFITS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE . It is really a very sad story to hear that many Americans are plagued by student loan DEBTS for the rest of their lives . It sounds INSANE that this happens in the RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD . This is really SAD !
While providing assistance to those need some relief, we have these corporations bringing in record profits. These money are not going to help us out. They went through our hands and got into the hands of the rich. The corporate lobbyists need to be out of the politics yesterday
Amen! And their money is going into offshore banks. So it's really not helping us. Then after we collapse we can only blame ourselves. For being idiots or for not standing up and voting.
It takes educated and engaged voters. It takes voters who understand the issues and where the candidates stand on those issues. It takes voters encouraging folks who will enact legislation that has our best interests covered to run for office. It takes educated and engaged voters to elect candidates who are worthy of representing us.
The Defense Budget is a jobs program. Directly or indirectly almost every House district and Senate seat benefits from defense spending. Middle and working class people having more discretionary income would generate more economic activity, creating jobs, increasing spending on local businesses, and increase the tax base, How? Forgiving student debt would increase the tax base. Increasing minimum wage would increase the tax base. Medicare for all would increase the tax base. Prescription drug price limits would increase the tax base. But we can't increase the tax base because Republicans need the lack of tax revenue to demand cuts in spending on everything but defense, corporate subsidies, welfare for the wealthy tax cuts, and reduction in top tax rates.
Yuuup! I used to work for a company that made parts for Lockheed here in Nevada, and they were tiny little parts made it steel that they machined. I KNOW it didn't take that much to make, considering the owners wife that financed the thing he enough money to get give a house away to a family member. When they told me that we were paid minimum wage while making hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of parts pass through my hand a day, I was pissed.
That's great, but we Americans have been brainwashed that higher taxes are bad. I could get behind my taxes being spent on education and health like in Europe. Of course, our politicians don't inspire a lot of confidence about spending our taxes to benefit the majority. It has always been that way, but the MAGAs have made it even more obvious to most of us.
Europe is a lot more progressive than the U.S. College tuition in Norway is free. The workers here would freak out if they knew the difference in labor laws.
It's wild to me that people on both sides will argue "winning results cost money" when it comes to the defense budget but play dumb on things like infrastructure and social programs.
The American global military footprint ensures the circulation of capitalist profits throughout the international system. Most nations are free-riding on us. The lie is that it has anything to do with human security, ours or anyone else's.
The defense contracts aren't the only issue Too many senators and representatives are in the pockets as well. In 2000 the Army said to congress they didn't need any more M1 Abrams. Here we are in 2023 and there have been more than 1100 more have been built. Those built are sent to the Army that now takes older units and destroys them. In spite of how the older units could be upgraded at 1/3 the cost
Don't we have enough equipment that we can cut back. Maybe pay the military enough that they don't need to be on public assistance to feed their families. Didn't the contractors have a free ride for long enough?
It takes more courage and strength to swim against the current than to be swept away by it. Every representative who voted to increase war spending is a coward. Spend money on improving Americans' quality of life, not on lining arm dealers' pockets.
AMEN!!!! There is sooooooooo much waste and money exchanging and padding on anything to do with the Defense Dept. it's a joke!!!! Everybody knows it. I know people who were so f'ing disgusted with the outright thievery that they quit their jobs in DC. Holy crap!!!! Unreal amounts of money!!! Millions and millions! Hard to believe but it is absolutely true.
I really hope this student loan plan passes I don’t think it will but I hope it eventually will. I had a chat with one of my friends and she explained to my that she took out 16k in student loans because she couldn’t get a full scholarship
Depends on what jobs the former students ended up.doing. The average salary is not middle class salary... most likely between 30k -40k... mosty likely not much room in budget to pay the student loans.
@@dcon9995I agree, it doesn’t look good with all the democrat held senate seats that are at risk. I’m concerned that people are going to believe the narrative that democrats are responsible for high inflation when it’s really the OILgarchy who’s responsible.
@@dcon9995I just hope that everyone who can vote will be allowed to because of all of the gerrymandering by Republicans! But the Supreme Court voted in favour of an Alabama where they have to redraw their map which was illegal in the last election!
This is why i will never contribute to an politicians. I work too hard for my meager amount of money to give it to people who have no qualms about wasting it.
The complete terms of a loan must be in writing when a person signs for a loan. If interest rates, payment schedules and penalties are not specified, they are unenforceable. Because the terms must be in writing there is no such thing as predatory lending. There is however, careless borrowing.
The fact that the damn pause has surpassed the loans themselves and the fact that Mohela is allowed to accrue 7-8% interest DAILY. We need to make higher education free for all, at least public universities.
What about all the PPP loans that were forgiven so damn easily especially to large corporations and those in congress who had business and received $100s to $1m of dollars for FREE
My husband and I went deeply into debt to pay for our children's educations. But we did not use student loans. So we are paying down debt instead of retiring while we watch this debate. We took on this debt so our children would not need to start life buried. No relief for us under these plans.
That was personal choice. Children don’t need anything other than basic needs. Parents, like my self, choose to do extra for their children. I sold my beloved truck that was in mint condition, paid off and low mileage to buy my daughter a new car. She is 13, I used my truck funds and took out a small car loan over 36 months to give her the car on her 16 birthday with a zero balance. Did I need to? I chose too
The B1 and B2 have been out of production for over 10 years. I'm glad he's on the job and standing on principle. We need more of that. Carry on Congressman
I think he was confused on what is happening with those aircraft based on the large dollar amounts that are spent on them. While these two aircraft are going to be replaced by the B-21 in hopefully the near future we do continue to modify, fix, and overhaul them which costs tons of money. Instead of spending millions of dollars to retrofit, repair, and modernize these aircraft we should be putting that money towards weapon systems that can carry their role until the replacement is available and reduce the fleet to open up spare parts for the air frames that remain.
The real problem is that universities are running wild on their cost of going to school. Professors write new books just for the sake of a new book with the same information.
That is a small part of the problem. A lot of schools are having problems staying open. One of the universities in Phila., PA area closed its door. It's been around for 80 or more years. Nope! The major problem is the bloodthirsty scum-sucking banks! My husband teaches part-time at night at a college and their enrollment has been declining. He also works full-time at a different job during the day. Because we are school-loaned out of money!
Anyone else remember the nuclear bomb drills we had where we would crawl under our desks? Like that would save us? I guess they thought it was helping people think they were doing something but damn. I really hope that they will pass this for us, it would really help bring the economy up; high tides lift all boats.
I remember those drills they were scary when we were kids I look back now and think they really did want to scare us. And they knew that wouldn’t save us maybe it would help them identify who we were IDK 🤷♀️
@@lesleedetchon They were very scary. I was so relieved when they ended them. I guess my age group maybe didn't really understand that it wouldn't, I was 10 when the cold war ended.
I imagine it's a lot like the mass shooter drills kids go through today. Except the chances of actually being killed by a mass shooter are somewhat greater than being hit by a nuclear bomb.
@@BeatTrump And the other difference is: the students today have seen many, many school shootings. They know it can happen. They know what it will be like when it happens. We of the cold-war generation had a general sense of brooding atmosphere, but since no one ever dropped a bomb on us, we had no experience of what that meant. Plus, today's students are shot at by people IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY, IN THEIR OWN TOWN. Often from their own school. Not by a foreign enemy.
I was searching for just that answer - defense is 800 billion PER YEAR compared to climate change mitigation dollars (330?) over 10 years? And climate change infrastructure is the real defense we need.
Are they the very defense contractors Eisenhower warned about? Even if Biden plan covered all the interest on student loans it would help. Then students could pay down their loans.
I have heard that. I paid off my undergrad loans. But my grad school loans are off the hook. Those asshats don't know what they are talking about. Different time, different salary, different circumstances. I bet they worked for military contractors!
Navy sailor here (aviation). Crazy thing is that, those billions of dollars, don’t go to infrastructure on our bases. It doesnt go to upgrade internet and network systems. We can't get our runway/flightline fixed. Cant get proper lighting in parts of the base. Don't have funds for upgrading equipment. Trillions to defense budget, we cant get a fn light bulb 🤬😡
When I sold industrial supplies, a govt contract was a cash cow to never have to work really. Play golf and kiss ass. Luckily for 28 years learned to help others with less I human services. Thats my Christianity. 😮
This is going to be a big deal for voters my age. As for the military hardware issues, the new ICBMs are needed as the old ones are at the end of their service window and modernizing them will incur more costs overall than replacing them with new missiles. The F35 right now is our best overall jet and while somewhat overpriced is still worth the capabilities it provides. I do want the fuckery with the contractors to stop though. That's potentially billions that could be used to help prepare our military for a possible war in the Pacific.
It doesn't make any sense! We are much stronger than we have ever been! Can't we just start investing in our weaknesses in other areas! We don't need to spend more money in the military when we are more powerful than the top 15 countries.....
The issue with student loan debt is that, under the Clinton Administration, it was made non-dischargeable under bankruptcy law. So, child support and student loans are the only two personal debts that CANNOT be discharged at bankruptcy! Predatory student lenders KNOW this, hence the compounding interest (e.g. interest on TOP of interest) and willingness to sign up any warm body for a student loan...because they KNOW the debt will be an albatross around that person's neck for the rest of their lives! OTOH, normal lenders, whose loans CAN be discharged in bankruptcy court ARE picky on whom they give loans out to, because otherwise, the lender could lose money if that person stopped paying and/or declared bankruptcy. This loan situation is more sober for both parties. So, the REAL solution this this ENTIRE mess? Force Congress to make ALL student loans dischargeable through bankruptcy again, including existing loans, if they've been held for five or more years.
It was actually in 1976 under the Ford administration that federal student loans couldn't be discharge in bankruptcy. That ended in 1976 when Congress amended the Higher Education Act of 1965.
Yes! This is the problem! It created the predatory student loan system! Students don’t have a problem with having to pay their loans, but they should only have to have one full-time job to do it and they should be able to discharge it to bankruptcy just like every other loan!
A ranch once owned by Ronald Reagan was being threatened by a wildfire. Firefighters tried to fight it by pouring water on a nearby hill and hoping it would trickle down.
Re: student loans... If they're not going to forgive the loan itself, they must eliminate the interest rate. Millions of people fall further behind because they can barely make the monthly interest, let alone pay down the principle.
My simple solution is fair and equitable. Remove all interest from loans, count every payment made as payment towards principle and forgive nothing but the interest. That's perfectly fair. Interest rates always change so there is no argument that can be made against this solution.
Definitely abuse by military contractors, my father was in the air force, he would see invoices, I remember him saying the military was being charged $700 for a specific hammer. There definitely needs to be better oversight.
