Speaking of steep grades, here in the UK the great western mainline was so level and they did EVERYTHING to avoid every single grade on the route and make it as flat as possible, including building massive viaducts and blasting huge tunnels through mountains that its colloquially referred to as "brunel's billiard table"

kAN's comment about grade in relation to aircraft approach angles is interesting. Most commercial aircraft are certified for 2.75-3.5% for precision instrument approaches. I used to fly commercial aircraft in and out of Aspen CO and those approach paths can be around 5-6% and that's STEEP so I can't imagine 10% on a railroad being anything other than ludicrous lol.

Another point to mention about brakes (especially tread brakes, as they are still very common on most American trains and on some European trains), is that when the brake shoes get too hot, especially under heavy braking, they experience something called "brake fade". Basically the brakes get so hot that they're no longer effective at actually slowing down the train, and as a result the braking power is greatly diminished. This is a massive problem because it usually happens going downhill or under heavy load, when the brakes are working their hardest, and when you REALLY need to stop. This is also part of the reason why a lot of modern European and Asian (and some American) EMU/DMU trains and some locomotives have disc brakes like automobiles as opposed to the old-fashioned tread brakes, because disc brakes generally perform better under heavy braking and are less susceptible to brake fade.

I had the misfortune to see a main connecting rod break off the rod joint and jamb itself through the boiler sheet of a tiny rideable steam loco, the engineer was EXTREMELY BLESSED that the steam evacuated away from his right leg. To answer Kan about airliners: Approaches to landing are all 3° (5.25%). I have seen a few steep approaches as much as 5.5° (9.6%) in mountainous or city terrain but those are pretty rare. 3° is the standard. Source: me! I have an airline transport pilot license
@Astrolex12
@Astrolex12 Год назад
And to add to that, an airplane should be in a "dirty" configuration to follow approach paths. This means having the wheels and flaps extended to increase drag and control your speed. If you fly a 3° slope "clean" (wheels and flaps retracted) you'll find it very hard to control your speed to a reasonable approach speed and end up way too fast. It's therefore common practice to descend (fast) to an altitude below your glide slope (3° approach path), then level off the airplane to slow down to a reasonable speed where you can dirty the airplane (wheels and flaps have a max speed for extension) and then intercept the 3° glide slope from below

Once again a word from history...when the B&O was building the original main line to Wheeling Virginia (pre civil war..no W Va) the bypass over the mountains for at least one tunnel used switchbacks with grades that a Winans 0-8-0 (largest freight engines of their day) could only work one car at a time over the switchbacks. Even with geared locos I dont think the current line is viable, nless you have one player eternally work an engine from the helper station one car at a time to the mine...and controlling loads DOWN..gonna be interesting.

So, a bit of advice... increase the grade in the leadup to the first bridge across the valley after the helper station, then you can decrease the grade of that bridge. Add a second loop so you can pull out of that helix higher up. At the "turnaround" point before the lookout bridge you can probably build another helix to reduce the grade there and then reduce the grade of the lookout bridge as well. Due to the extra helix loops you can probably get the average grade of the whole thing to about 4% - still pretty ridiculous but a lot more manageable with the equipment you have. Alternately, you can commit to buying a Shay and slowboating it the whole way up. As for Mallets pivoting like that, I have a G-scale model of SEG 104, one of the big Hanomag meter-gauge Mallets from the South German Railway, and while it doesn't really have that whole "I heard you're talkin' shit" look to it because it doesn't have the huge lamp base on the front truck, it still articulates pretty far on an LGB R1 (645mm radius, or about 14.5 scale meters in European Gm) curve.
@burdizdawurd1516Official
@burdizdawurd1516Official Год назад
Oh and if you want the BEST narrow gauge mountain experience: Mount Washington Cog Railway. It's 4' 8" so technically narrow by 1/2" so you could get away with running a standard wheelset if you wanted to in the gauge. Russian and Finnish trains have the same 4mm gap and used to interchange. But standard gauge equipment could not handle the grade. 37% on Jacob's ladder, averaging 25%, and using a Marsh rack system. From my understanding (and I last rode steam there when I was 3, so I'm impressed I remember this tidbit) the fireman shovels about a ton of coal on the three mile run up. It's about an hour of nearly-constant coal shoveling, opening the door every 20 seconds. The locomotives are actually articulated 0-2-2-0s, despite being tiny little workhorses that make a massive sound. Steam still runs 1 trip most mornings during operating season.

Geared locomotives in the West could and did do grades this steep as a way of life. Some grades brought in another consideration you have not mentioned, the crown sheet factor. Trains would made up to keep the locomotives pointed uphill to keep water on the crown sheet. Also, and on the safe side, the loco would be on the uphill side of the train to keep the drawbars tensioned. If you get a runaway, the crew was safer that way. Of course, I can’t see you could uncouple a tensioned drawbar!! 😮

Thanks for making me feel a little better Kan and Hyce. I'm one of the wizards. I'm studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. I love me a unit circle and the letter i.

I found the derailing downhill was caused by change in gradient, especially if that change is on a curve. Took me days to figure it out, I could run down full reg with just the loco but as soon as I had carriages behind they would derail every time. Another great episode. Loving your content!

Despite how long this video is, and how many "pee-in-a-cup" the two of you had been doing, "AND" how much it sounded like you were enjoying yourselves both working and crashing through everything, this was enjoyable also for me too. 10/10 (Maybe a 9-8)

once you build to the Coal Mine, continue building from the coal mine down the larger valley back to the Smelter with a shallower grade to handle loaded trains of Iron & coal. if you need to pull a bigger train, build some switchbacks at 4% as an alternate route to the Iron mine.

Looks like Monty got so annoyed that he started ballerina spinning especially after seeing his co worker used as a battery ram. Mean while the cars are like lets give them even more crap.

You know what that line calls for? A switchback, it's the only way that you can make it up there or you could build a line to the iron mine on the right side of the valley where the line from the sawmill curves towards the smelter

For the coal mine on my game I have the tract spur off at the smelter and circle around it at about 2% and then have it cross over the valley where the sawmill track is and continue on the edge of map side of the valley all the way up to the coal mine. It works really well even tho its pretty long. And most the line is flat other than the one section going up the shelf from the smelter.

it would be so funny if you could cook ribs like you did on the real life trains
