Your struggle sounds so very similar to what I went through. I highly recommend you go to a physical therapist and have them assess you, especially since you are limited on time with your race coming up. No amount of time off improved my knee pain the slightest bit. The pain would fluctuate, I had some days where it was gone, but it always came back within a week. I had several runs where I knew within 0.2 miles that I wouldn’t be able to complete the run that day. Nothing I tried made any sort of sustainable difference, not even “exercises for runner’s knee” from the internet. Until I finally went to PT. They identified immediately that I had structural patella issues caused by a combination of my anatomy and running form, and exacerbated by my ignorance of the problem. I would never have been able to figure any of that out on my own, and unfortunately I feel that I wasted a lot of time trying. The knee is such a complex joint that “runner’s knee” is just too much of a generalization for most of us. My husband and I love your channel and we’d love to see you crush this race, so this is just a friendly suggestion based on what worked for me.

Thanks for the kind comment, Carrie! If you don’t mind me asking, what did your PT recommend? I’m looking to take this week completely off from cardio and hoping Monday will be the day I can put this in the rear view mirror. I haven’t felt it in days but , then again, I haven’t done anything to aggravate it.

@@zachsalek In my case every week the PT manually stretched and massaged the reticulum in my knee which had become too tight, and also gave me targeted exercises and stretches to improve my neuromuscular cues while running. I actually didn’t have to decrease mileage too much during this treatment. All of that is highly specific to my problem, though. Turns out the problem had been creeping up on me for years and yours may be completely different. I sincerely hope you do have an easier fix. Hopefully a week off will do the trick!

Thanks again! I’m doing a lot of strength work this week and will take your PT advice if I’m not better next week. Hopefully the volume can start around where we left off 🤞

Hey Zach I know you may not be feeling the best at the moment but know within time, it will heal brotha. Stay positive, rest up and let your body figure out what’s going on. Let it do its thing, you got this! Also want to let you know, that you’ve had such a great positive impact on me. I’m fairly new to running and just recently came across your page. It’s so refreshing seeing someone who’s not this..perfect running influencer? Lol you’re a real person, living a real life with real problems. Absolutely love being on this journey with you, and here for all the highs and all the lows! I’ll be running my second marathon this Sunday and when I’m in the pain cave I’ll be thinking, “Do it for Walter…and Zach.” But mainly Walter, ahaha jk Rest up and take care brotha 💪🏽

Thanks so much for the kind words, they mean a lot to me right now. I’m hoping to get back to it on Monday so fingers crossed. There’s still plenty of time to get in good training. What marathon are you planning to do?

@@zachsalek I live in Hawaii so going to be the the Honolulu Marathon! My running journey started in August of this year. I had always gravitated towards lifting and never ran more than 3-5 miles at one time. And I ran probably once every 2 weeks if I felt like it lolol. But one day I decided to go running without any end goal. I Did 10 miles and absolutely blew myself away, I definitely felt the pain during and afterwards lol. Someone mentioned that the Kauai marathon was the following month. Did some quick math and figured if I could rip 10 miles without any training, then what’s an extra 16 lmfao..oh yea forgot to mention that the Kauai marathon is also 2300ft elevation gain ahahah I SUFFERED So that’s my story, and ever since then I’ve been addicted. So this will be my 2nd with some actual good training leading up to it!

That’s one of the most unique stories I’ve ever heard. Totally badass! There’s a really famous ultra that is hosted in Hawaii (i forget the name) that I’ve wanted to do for a while now. It has an insane amount of elevation though. Best of luck to you and I hope you keep running!

@@zachsalek just wanted to come back and update ya! I completed the Honolulu Marathon! There are definitely things I need to work on (getting more consistent training in) and wish things didn’t happen (major cramping) but Im taking them as learning lessons, so I’m happy with how I did. I was able to shave almost 30 minutes off my 1st marathon (finished 4:20), but definitely see room for improvement! Next one I’m going sub 4, I feel it! The Hurt 100 is the one you’re talking about. My fiancé and I are actually flying there next month to volunteer. I think it’s going be eye opening to see how the runners and event takes place because That’s eventually where I want to end up competing 2025! Stay hard brotha!

That’s insane improvement for someone who just picked up the sport. Congratulations and despite all the shoulda-woulda-couldas you’re feeling you should be proud because 30 minutes is HUGE! I’m actually quite envious because I haven’t finished 26.2 in a while. Definitely giving me some motivation. And hey, maybe we’ll see each other at hurt 100 in 2025??

I kept running with shin splints until I ended up with stress fractures, because I refused to take some time off 😂. I’m horrible about ignoring injuries until I can’t ignore it anymore!

I will never understand why people try to push through Injuries. Maybe it's just me but I've never personally experienced a time where that was a good thing.

Yeah I’ve been really divided on this one in particular. In the past I was really stupid and would not have taken any time off at all until the body completely broke down. Sometimes you get lucky and manage to train through it. It took me a few days to realize how serious this one actually was.
