45 min and not full. Will wait for 6th gen batteries from BMW or go 800v architecture from Porche. Infrastructure just not there. Maybe a commuter car for work but family roadtrip, no thanks! Great video!
We are headed down to DIsneyland from Rocklin. I have been doing my research on the stops. I have seen nothing but great reviews for the Kettleman City EA's. Will be hitting those on the way home. Going down 99 to get there and staying in Tulare and going to charge at the Walmart EA's. I love the Mantecca RAN stations as well as the Sacramento one. I was so hoping that Buttonwillow RAN would open by now, but it is good to know that next year whenb we go down, it will probably be open as well as Santa Nella and Firebaugh. Would be nice if they put one in on the Grapevine.
From what you mentionned it seems in conserve and with the skybox you get a bit less than 250 mi on highway, which is not bad at all. My skybox eats 10 mpg on a prius prime. About to get a r1s too so it s interesting...
That was great!!! How are you liking it 6 months later? I'm very excited for the R2!!!! I have a model 3 right now and looking forward to hopefully trade it in for that one!!!
What I am truly curious about is the cost you paid at each charging station and how it relates to a tankful of fuel or price per gallon vs. price per kilowatt
love the green, sorry I cancelled my reservation. instead I got the lightning. but at 1/2 the cost I'm not complaining.(yea I was able to get the PRO for $40,000). sorry not sorry.
You can count the charging stops yourself. 100% of them are documented in the video! It's tough to calculate hours of charging, because many of them happened while I was sleeping with free chargers at the hotel or the car was just sitting there while we were eating lunch with the kids.
@@dosthdosth I can't speak for Kevin...but we can go from 20% to 80% on the home charger (32a) in about 12 hours. On a DCFC charger, about 30 mins.....depending on the output of the charger. Just because it says "350kw" doesn't mean it will. I usually get about 200kW....which isn't bad.
Did you run into any stations (besides Tesla) where it wasn't compatible? I went to a EVGo and the charger wouldn't fit even though the map told me to go to that location.
I'm curious.. when you stop to charge.. what does it typically cost you to recharge on average? I'm actually considering a Rivian pickup truck and getting rid of my Silverado that currently is costing me a small fortune. I'm probably spending $200+ per month on gas. We just went solar recently and now I'm re-thinking our vehicles.
We didn't look too closely because 90% of our charging is "free" at home w/ solar. But on average, it was about $30 to $40 to "fill up" 80% or so with the public chargers.
@@hungarianhc Thx. I'd mostly charge at home with solar. I'm just curious what the average cost is if a public charger was used. Appreciate the feedback.
If you get a monthly membership plan with Electrify America ($7.00/month) the cost per kW drops by $0.12 (usually it will be $0.36/kW). My wife opened the fuel bill last month.....$10....and that was for a carwash. Our RAV4 Prime which my wife drives about 10 miles a day still have 3/4 of a tank after 1-1/2 months. Yes, our electric bill has gone up, but not that bad.
As someone elese mentioned, if you give EA $7 a month, you save 12 cents per kWh. Normally the kWh is .48. There is one thing that is different from an EV and an ICE truck. With an ICE truck, your MPG is higher on the highway and lower MPG is in the city driving. With an EV, it is inverse. You get better 'mileage' at slower speeds than at faster speeds. I do not own a Rivian, just a Tesla. We have done 2400 miles in a similar trip to this one, we have done 1600 mile trips going north of this one. We have done 1200 mile trips in Florida. All of our trips average out from .10 to .12 per mile using the Tesla SuperChargers. It would be higher with EA because the cost per kWh is much higher and the efficiency of the truck is lower than a Tesla. I would suspect that it is probably closer to 18 to 22 cents per mile. Comparing that to a Silverado 5.3 and that will get about 17 mpg. If gas is $5 a gallon that is almost 30 cents per mile. I have found holes in the charging network and it is relatively easy to find. One, get off the major roads. Finding a charger in a remote area regardless of Tesla or Rivian or EA is hard. Two, the four corners. Once you get to Indian reserverations, finding a charger is extremely hard. Hope that helps.
Curious but why not add another kid in the second row, fold one of the rear seats down and then ditch the thule roof box? Roof box is probably stripping at least 10% range. Edit: the 20in all terrain probably steal another 5-10%.
2 reasons... 1. CARGO! Our roofbox was FULL. Our frunk was FULL. We had snow skis, a pack n play for the baby, boots, helmets, etc. We were full to the brim. 2. Comfort - We have the luxury of not typically having 3 kids across in the middle seat, and it's better. They have more space, less fighting, etc. If they're happier in the car, that means we can drive farther without an "incident." We only use that roofbox for probably 4 to 5 trips a year... We use it for ski trips for the ski equipment, and then maybe once a year we'll do some kind of road trip w/ camping equipment or something else where we need the space. It probably does kill the range by 10% or so, but I don't really care that much... I can only drive so far before I need to stop and pee or have lunch or something so it's all good. We love the Thule!
@@hungarianhc I didn't realize you guys had skis with you! I was skipping around the video haha. Makes a ton of sense why you used the Thule box. And yes children sitting side by side isn't always ideal. But seeing the video they seemed to well behaved? which is why I was wondering 😅
Tesla is opening their stations sometime next year and Rivian is going to give free NACS adapters so we can use them. So, right now, it takes plannine, in the future, there will still need planning, but it will be easier and more reliable. The only downside to Tesla stations is they are (from what I have seen) about $0.50/kW, but when you need it, you need it.
The year is 2024, you have been in a coma for 15 years…. Electric cars are pretty common vehicles now. The charge using electricity rather than gasoline
Typically yes. It's fine but not always ideal since it goes very slow to get to that point. Often it's faster to only go to 80 or so, but if you know you have a very long leg and want as much range as possible, it's not a problem to top up fully (if it's an overnight charge the extra time doesn't matter).
It only makes sense to charge to 100% if you really have to. Really should not charge more than enough to make it to your next charging location. I prefer more stops and shorter charge times.
Why isn't there a single charging standard? Why can't all chargers charge quickly? These are the factors that discourage people from purchasing electric cars.
Bro you did a Doo Doo 💩 change at a charging station? Were you promoting that accessory? Did your charging neighbors get a poopy experience at charge as well? I’m confused. 😂
I should have! To be honest, I didn't care... Two reasons: the Rivian chargers are currently free, and I do 90% of my charging at home, which is also free (solar). So for such a limited use case, it wasn't something I was thinking I needed to track. Should have done it for the video!
So you have to plan your trip around finding charging stations that i am guessing are not right off the highway and you have to spend time away from your family on the trip and it takes like 40 min or more per stop. I will stick with gas because in reality there is no benefit to owning electric at all!
It seems like a major pain-in-the-arse to charge. With traditional autos, you pull into any gas station and you’re good-to-go for 300-400 miles in 5-minutes.
With a Rivian, you wake up with 300-400 miles of range without going to a station. A regular plug (like a pioneer hotel, or at home) does the trick. If you do need to stop, 30 min at a high speed charger is all you need.
Yeah that’s my take too. I’m beginning to wonder if traveling with an ev is actually cheaper. Ever time they stop to charge, the occupants are either eating, or being entertained or shopping. I like my time while vacationing to be the at the destinations not the journey.
@@dontrustwhiteyevery1 5-10 hrs away?? And in colder climate. Then have to rent a car/Uber when there? Or just drive my own fuel efficient car that i can keep items in even a spare gas can. Trust me I want to jump on the EV bandwagon but folks gotta be practical and non bias. It’s gonna be interesting if the population makes it to 20-40% adoption and then realize we don’t have enough power supply and when/if we do, electricity $ is gonna go thru the roof.
@@garny3766well then you stick to your fossil fuel car. Don’t come back crying about gas prices. The younger generations will be using EVs for sure once the whiners are gone.
Way to much time spent planning around the charging. With an ice car you don't need to plan at all. Electric cars are not the future they are just an add on for mainly local commutes. Hydrogen may be the future.
From the video it seems all you did was charge. That should have been the title. Charging my status symbol. Didn’t make it through whole video. Bullshit. Ps. I’m a fan of electric cars
Is actually way cheaper than gas, and yes the range might not be the best but for a car that you’ll use everyday is perfect. BTW if you have an EV you’ll be saving 66% of money buy charging in your house than going to a gas station
This doesn’t look very appealing. I own a EV and would never cart my entire family around the country in it. That’s what my gas powered, body on frame Lexus suv is for. I don’t take vacations to sit around in parking lots. EVs are fine for commutes and charging at home but not much else
Why in the world would you want to stop for an hour every 300 miles. I can literally fill up in 5 minutes n instantly have another 390 mile range on my atlas.
The sky is blue. Oh, I thought we were staying obvious things, you know, like that a new entrant into the automotive space isn’t turning a profit in the 2nd year of manufacture.
Yeah Pendaranrobert, you are so right. I have bought myself a nice Boeing 737 Max8 now, once fuelled it goes on for several thousand miles. This is so awesome 😂
