You've got to take one off road to understand. And to compare it to a Wrangler is like comparing a Leather recliner to a wooden bar stool. The amazing thing about the LR3 is the fact that it can do everything off road, while still being luxurious. Thats one thing the wrangler could never do. It's also extremly reliable, not something you would expect from the land rover of the past.
Thats my overall point, its a "recliner" that CAN go out into the woods. Having owned a Land Rover, I know their flaws and shortcomings. But if I had a choice, simply based off off-road ability, I would without doubt pick the Land Rover. You are correct about what "most people" think about Land rovers. However, I have found that my Disco is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, its never left me stranded. And consider this, 70% of EVERY land rover EVER made is still running today.
When this guy says the LR3 is not a status symbol, it shows his lack of knowledge. The LR3 is a major status symbol in almost every city in the USA. Most people DO NOT but these as heavy duty off road vehicles or work trucks.They are a nice alternitive to the more costly V8 HSE.
Sure it doesn't get great gas mileage but when cruising down a highway I'll get 20+. I own one and drive it everywhere. Has great room for you and passengers. It's a beast but doesn't drive like a truck. Smooth and comfortable with the ability to go everywhere
I'm not sure what you have against Land Rovers, but there is no denying that they are the best off road vehicles stock. They also have one of the greatest stories to tell, and have the most devoted owner community. Thats all that matters to me.
The only way I can make sense of what you are saying is that LR and Jag are the only internationally-sold mass produced cars in Britian. In America, you should know the Range Rover has consistently ranked as the lowest mass produced car for sale in raw reliability data from Consumer Reports, which is by far the most trusted source for automobile statistics in America. And the 09 score is the lowest of the lot, just like the years before it.(And off road cars can defin fall apart, and obv have)

You are absolutley right. No, a Land Rover is not at all a sensible choice. But, if it strikes a strong cord with you, then by all means go for it! Its just that for me, a car must be relatively reliable or I can't passionate about it, but if it makes you happy, then who am I to say anything? It is the same reason why people buy Italian supercars. They go like hell and make you laugh, even if they'll end their life in a fireball.

As we all know, statistics can be misleading. If in fact 70% of all LRs are still on the road today, I would have to say that it is because 90% of all Land Rovers sold (especially considering outside of the west) are utilitarian, basic Defenders which LR has perfected over the last 30 years by having no product revolution. What would be a more interesting statistic to me is what percent of Range Rovers are still on the road today.
Your simile is correct, but would you take a recliner into the woods or take a wooden stool deep out into the woods?? And I (and many others) could not disagree more about your view on the reliability. Land Rover as a brand in America has by far THE actual lowest reliability rating of any other car mfr. This is regardless of the surveying firm or the reviewer.
I know, this review is kind of ironic. Why would you buy this "for its intended use," when a Jeep Wrangler is much cheaper and just as competent? And why would you buy this if you will use it on the road most of the time? It rides poorly and gets poor gas mileage. There are far better car based SUVs for mainly on road driving, which get better gas mileage, and almost all (cars in existence) are more reliable, according to Consumer Reports. So why would you ever buy this car at all?
This is the worst car ive ever seen on the roads and I mean that. It annoys me when ever I see one of these show its ugly face. I hated before I knew it was unsafe and very unreliable.
