Actually, Sabaton's songs have a tendency to make listeners feel patriotic about countries they are not citizens of.

That's kinda how I tried to explain "Bismarck" to my ~4yr old godchild the other day 😂 She was like: Why did they broke that big ship? Me: You see, they played a game called "battleship" and because they're adults, they played it with really big ships and on water. Her: True, when you're a big adult, you need bigger playthings, to fit inside, right? Me: Yeah... something like that 😂👍

Interesting fact about the infantry regiment I 13 in Falun (in Sabatons home town). In this regiment (there I did my military service as well) we had a very special way of taking orders (the only regiment in Sweden doing this). Instead of saying ”Yes captain” (or whatever officers rank) we always answered ”shall be done captain”, this also go back several hundred years back in history! Note: Livgardet is not the same regiment as I 13 in Falun! (More to explain the mentality of the people living in Dalarna) 💪💪 Why Gustav Vasa recruited men from Dalarna: at that time Gustav Eriksson (Eriksson was his original surname) fled away from the danish (and swedish pro danish) soldiers, and at that time it was forbidden for farmers in Sweden to have weapons at home. But Gustav Eriksson (Vasa) knew that the farmers in Dalarna gave a f**k in that law, because people in Dalarna are known to be stubborn and proud people so they did as they wanted themselves anyway. So he fled to Dalarna to seek shelter and support among the locals in Dalarna to fight back the danish and pro danish soldiers and I think it was at that point the first 16 men of his royal guard was recruited 😊 You should also dig into the Battle of Narva (mentioned in the text) its considered to be the greatest victory in Swedish history!

I am from Sweden and the music sounded very familiar to me, but I couldn't place it right away. Then I read Kim Clements comment and the coin dropped, but I know it as a psalm that people sing during mass in church - "Härlig är jorden..." (Glorious is the Earth). I can not find anything wrong in what you say, and the abscense of other comments correcting any faults is a good indication that you are spot on. Must have a look at the original video to see if I recognise any names in the credits. And btw, in the trailer that Sabaton posted on instagram they say that on the last day of shooting they finished at 2am, so it is a very long and tedious process to make a video like this. Edit: I just want to add that at 9:34, right after the current kings motto which you noted, he sings "De gör vad som synes omöjligt" ("they do what appears to be impossible") this is the swedish translation of "Possunt nec posse videntur", the motto of Livgardet.

I'm one of them, one of the Royal Guard 500 years old. :-) But I didn't knew that untill I saw this video. I served in the swedish regement K1 in 1978/79 as a MP, and we were called Svea Livgardets Dragoner. We were cavallary so we had to learn to ride a horse. I have more than 80 hours on top of a horse. I have ride (rode/ridden?) five changes of "högvakten" to the Stockholm castle and walked three. In that time Stockholm was a beautiful city. Still is ofc, but the criminality is silly in that town nowadays. However, this song makes my heart warm. It's a recognisition from Sabaton for my service to my country. I love them for that, I love them for all their other songs, I love them for their music, I love them for their lyrics, I love them since they are a part of me and they make me proud to be Swedish. /MickeP

The foundation of this song is an old hymn, as other have commented. This hymn is one of the first hymns I learned. In September 1973 our old king died. Next day at school, all children were gathered in the aula. Our principal announced the death of our king, we all sang this hymn "Härlig är jorden" and then we cheered for our new king.

The royal mansion where the king decided to start the regiment, where the regiment stil today have the cermony when the soldiers are rewarded with their beret and the touches that they place at the same place. In the aong you have the hymn Härlig är jorden” än they also have a line from the hymn our father “fader vår”.. but changed it to our national father. Also the text ”De gör vad som synes omöjligt” translated to “they do what appears to be impossible, and that is the motto of the regiment.. some of the famous battle they won and the list goes on and on.. this is a total tribute to the lifeguards. Crossing the Belt in Danmark allowed Karl X Gustav to lay siege to Copenhagen in 1658 and the peace treaty the Danish had to sign was what made us in Skåne Swedish. This is from a comment on the official video: "The melody is based on a Christian hymn know as "Härlig är Jorden" (Psalm 297) in Swedish. It seems like the hymn came about in melody as a folksong in Germany and was called "Schönster Herr Jesu, Herrscher aller Erden”. It was later in the 1850s changed by the Danes and called "Pilgrimssang" or "Dejlig er jorden" and is probably how it spread to Sweden. In English the melody is known as "Fairest Lord Jesus"." And I know the melody from local hymn here as well. On a side note, I don't think this single will be on the new album, just like Bismarck wasn't released on The Great War .. it's basically a way to get some hype building for the next release

Great reaction man! I'm Swedish and it's weird how we're not taught this or a lot of Swedish history in school. As far as I can remember, we stopped reading about "older" Swedish history in about 5th grade. It's both interesting and way too important to leave out of the education. Glad to see Sabaton doing their part to educate everyone! On another note, you gotta react to their song "Metal Crüe" (probably most enjoyable live) it's a banger!

Karl X and Karl XI were the kings that started the carolean era with disciplined soldiers a bascically standing army funded by the farmers of the empire of Sweden trained in small unit combat constantly but required to train in annual "wargames" and drills in their respective regiments/batallions. Karl X was a veteran from the 30 years war and was one of the swedish commanders after Gustav II Adolf died at Lützen 1632. He wasnt named king until 1652-53 though from what i recall. But the major reorganization of the standing elite Caroealn army happened during Karl XI reign. Karl XI was known as the "Greycape" he rode from town to town mustering men and oversaw their training regiment and also visited farms to make sure everyone was well fed etc. The only Swedish king that really couldd pop up anywhere unexpected except for his more famous son Karl XII.

The melody is in the Finnish hymnal, Hymn 30. "Maa on niin kaunis." Originating in Germany 1842. Noted down by Bernhard Severin Ingemann 1850. First translated into Finnish by Hilja Haahti between 1886 and 1903. Current translation added into the book in 1986. Used during Christmas services. Maa on niin kaunis, Kirkas Luojan taivas, ihana on sielujen toiviotie. Maailman kautta kuljemme laulain, Taivasta kohti matka vie. Kiitävi aika, vierähtävät vuodet, miespolvet vaipuvat unholaan. Kirkasna aina sielujen laulun taivainen sointu säilyy vaan. Enkelit ensin paimenille lauloi, sielusta sieluhun kaiku soi: Kunnia Herran, maassa nyt rauha, kun Jeesus meille armon toi. I'm certain everyone from the Nordic lands knows the melody.

Awesome vid as always! The melody is an scandinavian hymn, originally written by the danish author Bernhard Severin in Ingemann 1800s. Translated to "Devine is the Earth". "Härlig är jorden" has strong ties in Sweden and to most swedes in some way. Mainly through church, ceremonies like funerals. There're plenty national folk melodies they could actually pick, but this fits the purpose so well to an anthem. Cause it really is an anthem to Livgardet, as themselves said, it's hard to pick events and contexts out of something thats 500yo.
