Roadside Firewood Haul After a Storm (Forest Service Showed Up) 

This is Random Forest Service Guy. I think I would have watched my language better, if I'd known quite how much you were picking up with that little camera! Never realized how doofy I sound! 🙂 Anywise, Diego, I want to thank you kindly for all the hard work you put in clearing the road. You definitely make the world a better, and safer place. And, everybody, please don't cause me trouble over anything ya see here ya might feel inappropriate. I work hard as I can figure how, and mean all good, trying to do good things for all forest critters and people. Safely. name is Murray, a.k.a. As a U. S. forest service employee of 40 years, now retired for 12 years: the forest employee in engineering in this video should be commended for being such a good embassador to the public. I am glad Diego was stocking up on firewood as the Forest Service is getting parts of their roads cleaned for free and he is getting free firewood for the taking. This is the way the USFS has dealt with the public since it's conception.

Park Service guy was pretty handy with that saw. Doesn't make sense to throw the wood away when someone could use it. Finally a government guy with some common sense.

I have the highest respect for this guy. Not only does he provide a service to assist the overworked and underpaid workers whose livelihood is dependent upon doing this as a means of employment, he takes the time to clean up after gathering his "free firewood". On top of it all, he even remembers to put on his hearing protection! How can you not love this guy? And yes, I am a full fledged Cougar, (the two-legged type)!🤣😂🤣

My neighbor was clearing a tree from the side of the road and a forest service guy came by and cited him for not having a permit. Hundreds of dollars for a fine. This USFS guy is an example of someone who understands public service is more than screwing with people.

See, lots of people take blowdowns from the side of the road, but YOU take it to the next level and _clean up your mess._ Very few people go that extra mile, that extra bit of courteous effort that makes such an incredible difference.

It's nice to see people who know how to use a saw. I think as long as you clean up the branches and small stuff and you keep the road safe, you should be allowed to take the wood

My next door neighbor Sam just passed away at 91 this past spring, I had a wonderful relationship with him, he was old school and had many different sayings, the one that applies here would be "you could judge a mans wealth by his firewood pile" Nice work Diego!! One thing you many want to try and it isnt that expensive is the fiskers x27 splitting axe, its one of my favorite axes for hand splitting, very light, strong (cant break the thing) and saves a lot of energy vs using the heavy maul all the time.

Cottonwood isn't a hot burning wood, but it still puts out heat. Let it dry thoroughly and it'll burn just fine. Good for those "transitional" nights where you need some heat, but not a lot. Random Forest Service guy was a good guy. Not wrapped up tight in his own ego and trying to lord it over the common folks. He recognized that Diego was doing a good service and getting the wood was his reward for the effort. A win-win scenario in my book.

Time to quadruple the size of the wood shed!!!

Nice work Diego/Random Forest Service Guy, it is allot of work and its rewarding in the best personal way, I help a nephew of mine12 yrs ago who bought 20 acres of land to build a home on and it was pure forest no road in, we parked on the side of the gravel road and walked over the ditch on a few 2 by 12's we brought along, there was a far amount of water in the ditch still, he bought 2 new Stihl chainsaws with 20" bars and 4 chains we cut and limbed almost 100 trees that day and almost as many the next day, it was the fall of the year so it never was to warm, it sure was a good feeling to get that done, we did almost the same the next weekend, it was a mixture of poplar and oak and i got 2 small loads of each which was enough firewood for my fire pit for 2 summers, it felt good and was nice to sit around the fire remembering the fun we had clearing those trees, they were not as big as the ones you were clearing /cutting up, when the bulldozer showed up to cut in his road to where the house was going to be , boy did it make short work of the tree stumps we left behind, great video 👍

I love the legacy connection using your grandpa’s chainsaw, priceless. Don’t ever, ever get rid of your grandpa’s chainsaw. You may one day retire it, but that is a family jewel to keep and tell stories about to the younger generations.

A little tip Diego: on the bigger pieces of wood, don't try and split it from the center. Start on the outside about 5" inches in from the outside. Keep splitting this way around the outside until you have a piece about 12" in diameter left, then you can split that from the center.

Battery chainsaws are nice, biggest thing for me is quiet , i use vegetable oil in my battery saws, figure its a little cleaner for my saw and the environment. Forest service should give you and honorary bage for always helping, good job on the cleanup. If everyone would care it would be a better world.

The township we lived in would cut any downed trees into fireplace size logs and pile them alongside the road. They made it easy peasy.

Good man , and as he was appreciative of your work and confirmed that when they clear the road they throw the cut wood into the ditch then there is no reason why you shouldn't take the cut wood home , good video Diego

On the Marty T channel he actually uses a respirator mask to eliminate both the oil/gas fumes and the fine sawdust.... clean air into the lungs..... He uses an electric Stihl for limbing. If you use full synthetic mix oil that reduces the smoke by a huge amount. 025 Stihl that I've had for 28 years loves it! If you had a trailer you could carry a small single cylinder diesel powered splitter on it...doubles your wood carrying capacity and saves your back. Marty T also made a log lifter using the ram on the splitter to lift rounds up onto a tray he attached to the splitter... that tray takes care of storing split off chunks while you are dealing to the hunk actively being split. Thanks for an enjoyable vid that just records life "as it happens". Murray is a good man with a great work ethic...and treats members of the public as they should be treated. Subbed.

Diego I could of watched more but I know it's a tiring job cutting and hauling firewood, especially when it is wet, it was a passion of mine when I was younger, loved every moment, you can never have too much firewood❤

Youll have to get yourself a 9 ton electric log splitter, and a battery vacuum blower to clean up the road. A nice chap 'the random forest guy' is, regards from N.Z

Hey Diego get yourself a leaf blower for cleaning up the road after harvesting wood. I like my GT Worx with a battery. Should be able to charge on your solar setup. I also have the trimmer and some of the tools. I did that intentionally to get additional batteries that operate several different tools. I also get free for life spools for the edger. Most are under $100 so are a great value. I use mine for all kinds of jobs... sweeping out the garage for instance.

Big fan Diego, I have binged on your shaking videos and am sorry to be late with comments. In BC the old time loggers would retire from the bush and split shakes for a pension. There was no social safety net so they would buy a couple of pallets of blocks from the mills and sell them back as shakes and double their money, tough old birds. I saw the old railway station building in Revelstoke BC roofed with 11/2" fir shakes, I think so they could weather a bit every year and still last a long time. cheers

I have been splitting wood all my life from the time I was like 8 years old. I am not going to say how you are splitting wood is wrong because everyone has their own way of splitting wood. I would like to offer you a little advice with the hopes you try it and see what a difference it makes. So Get an old wire coat hanger Open it and wrap it around the base of the splitting mall and even your Axes. You can also use half of the wire from a old coat hanger and wrap it around the base of your hatchet. Try it for about 6 month even a year if you like and tell me what you have learned about this old trick. The only regret you will have is you never tried it before. If after you have tried this and you have no idea why I said to do this I will tell you all the Benefits. I see many video's of people splitting wood by hand and not one of them have done this. I have not told anyone about this trick in years so you are the first in many years I have told about this.

A good firewood supply is something that covers not only this winter, not only next winter, but the winter after that as well, giving the logs plenty of time to dry out and season nicely. Some species won't need that much drying time, but others (cottonwood is notoriously slow to dry) can literally require a couple of years. If it were me, I'd consider building & running 2 separate woodsheds, so there's always one you're drawing from that's the seasoned wood, plus a second full one that's busy curing. That way, you'll always know which is the older lot of wood. (But that's me, lol; you do you!)

Diego, I happened upon your video and watched and was very impressed by what a hard-working young man you are, so I subscribed to your channel. I am 64 year old grandmother when I was growing up. My family never lived in town, and when I was in my teens, we lived in a house that had a furnace that burned wood and gas. I would go with my parents to cut wood, and I remember what a job that was to get that wood. Your video broght back memories. I look forward to more videos. 😊

My Dad was a logger and each fueling he’d touch up his chain. He told me if I had to push on the saw I needed to sharpen it.

Diego, it surprised me that other people beyond the Forestry Service guy stopped to help you. You are doing a huge service to all motorists going through this road.

Certainly appreciate the collaborative revealed here. However working as wildland firefighter until 72 , still with FD in 80 th year. PPE important as the Forest service employee stated Chaps, Hardhat, safety vest. Where roadway blocking occurs from down trees, minimum should be pylons for traffic safety control. Moving wood across the road can be tenuous especially when traffic approaching from blind curves. Living in the woods off grid for 22 years and fire service for 30 SITUATIONAL AWARENESS with appropriate PPE at the job site will increase you chances of returning home each day safely. BTW ON ONE OCCASION YOU FELL BACK WITH SAW IN HAND , COULD HAVE BEEN LIFE THREATENING WITH SAW IMPACTING YOUR LEG. I ENJOYED WATCHING Your work ethic.
