What you didn't realise about driving in Powys is that there is a secret max speed limit of 40mph. The only people aware of this limit are elderly drivers and farmers.

These cars were a lifeline for many disabled people. Not the most reliable with their Villiers 197 cc engine. I knew several people who drove them and they were very pleased to have them. I would love to have one as I was a three-wheeled car enthusiast, owning Reliants, Bond mini cars, and Isetta bubble cars.

Really appreciate your opinion on travelling in other vehicles blind spots, I don’t think I’ve heard that from anybody else in the Media. That behaviour by drivers confirms how little self-awareness and safety consciousness people have today. I think it may also be a function of cruise control including the adaptive version. I use my cruise but regularly accelerate for short distances to clear risk zones before resuming.

Excellent road trip video and potted history of the AC/Invacar. I can remember one being parked in a driveway opposite my old college back in the early 80's. So a teenage memory for me, seeing these on the roads. Again totally bonkers... sorry... brave! Taking TWC on the motorway. Understand the danger of cross-winds and blind spots. My Mega Multitruck is a van. It has no rear windows (even if it had I wouldn't be able to see much) and comes equipped with a rear view mirror on the windscreen(!) So you do need to take care when reversing and of course for blindspots. The cross winds take great effect locally in our part of France. As you perhaps saw on your Croatia visit, there are vast swathes of featureless, hedgeless and relatively flat and empty French countryside. We are in a vale here in the Paris region but otherwise, the roads to the villages around here through that flat featureless landscape, have no protection from winds. I used to get swept from the side when I rode my 50cc scooter which was a bit hairy. But in a slab-sided very light Mega truck - well, the situation is very much like that with TWC - perhaps at slower speeds. Ridiculously here in France, I am able to "learn to drive" in my "sans permis" vehicle - I do not have a drivers licence. Although I have driven a lot locally, I have yet to take to the open road. Being a non-driver, since taking driving lessons in a Peugeot 205 GRD in 1991, at my advanced age I'm a late-comer to the joys of driving. My incentive? To learn on the fly, pass my test and then... get a 2CV... I can dream, can't I?

I had a Raleigh Moped in 1967 2 horsepower and it had a centrifugal clutch and no gears and it was belt driven and two stroke so mixing petrol and oil was fun. After 6 weeks I got run over by a 20 ton lorry the moped was destroyed but I wasn't so I can still write this.

Don't worry a Suzuki Alto can handle motorway. I had a Suzuki swift saloon 1.6 GLX in 1995, drove it 4600 km's without a problem to Serbia in 2006-2007 and 2008 in 2008 I managed to drive 2300 km in 17,5 hours almost nonstop.It stood it's ground in Germany among Audi's Porsches etc. I didn't have to be ashamed.Suzuki makes reliable cars, I once sat in a Daihatsu cuore L701 and I was astonished how it drove very much as a bigger car,it's as small as an Alto.Although Alto is a different kind of a car a cheaper one.

People may think your mad for doing that but the thing is it was probably a lot more fun or should I say entertaining than driving the same in a modern sports car. With all the millions of speed cameras it's stressful driving a modern car as they are so capable. To have any fun in a modern car you have to drive over the speed limit. However in an Invacar you can scary the crap out yourself at 40/50mph and still keep your licence

Excellent comments about the Invacar history Ian. I am just old enough to remember seeing World War 1 Veterans in hand powered invalid carriages, though a few had petrol driven models. I lived near a British Legion home. Their carriages were all open to the elements and the Invacar was progress at the time, though even then there were calls to give injured veterans modified cars, which would actually have been less costly...but who knows how the minds of politicians work.

I remember seeing that AC.. thought the Invacar looked familiar. Interestingly the placards in the museum don't really mention it being an "invalid carriage" (which mobility scooters are still classified as), just being something a 16 year old could drive and get on the cheap. Don't even mention the name AC really, just "Wee Bluey". There's a mention of the chair sliding over and fitting a wheelchair but not how that was theoretically the primary purpose. So I could kind of argue I got a better education about them from you.... as the display in Glasgow just made me think it was yet another 3 wheeled car of the time that you could drive on a bike license with a 30 minute CBT. Obviously this secondary market must have existed but it would have been nice for their "coverage" to have been a bit more multifaceted. (It had caught my eye enough to take pictures of all the placards, so I reviewed them before writing this.)
@Kraken1000
@Kraken1000 5 лет назад
Re your point about electric mobility scooters being an adequate replacement for the Invacar. This is not the case. The invalid carriage, all of them, all models, were seen as prosthetics for injured servicemen after WWII. That is, it got the user to work, out and about, wherever. I know a couple of people from back in the day who did tens of thousands of miles in theirs. Going on holiday, not shopping so much, and work, as I mentioned.. What replaced them was Mobility Allowance that allowed users to buy real cars adapted with hand controls. You could carry passengers! Now with Motability the disabled can have the vehicle they need, though there is a cost limit after which the user adds to it. A basic adapted auto Fiesta has no additional payment.
@HubNut
@HubNut 5 лет назад
Invacars were often used more as mobility scooters than cars though. They were used for nipping to the shops. I don't disagree that Motability offered fresh options, but the Invacar was one step up from a wheelchair back when there was nothing else.
