Warning only that he was bound and determined to barrel right on through regardless of alternate paths he could have taken presenting far less risk to everyone else involved. Even if it had injured the tractor trailer driver to veer off the road across the space to the right or to the left or he had been killed in the process it would not have caused harm to the children or drivers of vehicles in the oncoming lane if he had not been so lucky. Luck played against children’s lives is irresponsible to a criminal degree.
I can not tell you what the driver was thinking at the moment or what I would had done if it was me. he’s actions saved there’s lives. I am grateful nobody got hurt.
To hear the terror in the tractor trailer drivers voice as he was approaching that bus made me tear up. Great evasive driving avoiding what could have been a tremendous tragedy.
Truck driver is an idiot for staying on the road, just because it happened the way it did doesn’t mean he did the right thing He had plenty of time to go off the street instead he chooses to stay on the road and risk killing innocent people
@@user-qb3vi5kk3t I understand your opinion because I had that reaction myself at first. It took me a couple rewinds to see all the homes, and other vehicles on the road and around him. It’s crazy how they want to give the CDL driver charges for brakes going out 😡. he’s doing his job, just listen to his fear he didn’t want to intentionally hurt anyone. If it wasn’t for drivers this country would fall apart
Exactly. Not much you can do once your brakes go out. I don't see how any of it could be his fault. He's alert, he's blowing the horn to make sure everyone knows he's there, and then maneuvers his way around traffic. They should be rewarding him, not investigating him. If anything, investigate the truck and whoever did the inspections.
Brakes on a tractor trailer don’t just stop working. What happened here was the truck drivers failure to do a proper pretrip and hitting the road with bad brakes. Also, he should’ve been able to drop a few gears and slow down. Jake brakes work wonders in situations like this.
Credit to the tractor trailer driver for warning everyone and being able to maneuver through the vehicles during an extremely scary situation and also huge credit to the pickup truck for thinking fast and reversing to make a big enough gap for the truck
He could have been on his cell phone also. He said the brakes went out but was able to bring the truck to a stop 1320 feet past the bus, so he had some brakes there
As a CDL holder, this tractor trailer driver had excellent maneuvering navigating that tight gap. Thankfully he was able to eventually slow down to a stop, and no lives were lost.
@@MysticMae21 Can you read? it ALREADY HAPPENED hence they wouldn't be freaking out they probably would've brushed it off since they didn't see it happened.
It's reassuring to see every driver in the video take the proper safety precautions so nobody gets hurt or killed. Between the trucker blaring the horn in the distance as a warning to the Mercedes driver pulling off the side of the road and to the Silverado backing up to give the trucker enough space to maneuver around the bus. If only every driver in the country could be this alert and precautionary, driving wouldn't be such a chore.
Remember it happens to the safest vehicles so even if you inspected the truck it doesn't mean that you are at fault. So he did the best thing ever for warning and the SUVs aswell. The people who own the damaged vehicles should be awarded with new vehicles and the truck driver should get a new one for free if he doesn't own it or even if he does own the truck he should be awarded with a new one. That's what I think!+
Credit to the trucker for being aware. Credit to the pick up truck driver! That was a situation where all were aware and they took action. I'll be shocked if the driver is pressed with charges.
@@2PiNkStEr honestly I don’t think his insurance needs to pay anyways. In this case, he was driving defensively to avoid a collision, so because the tractor trailer created such a situation that made it so he had no choice but to reverse, he or his company (who ever is responsible for the faulty maintenance in the first place) would be liable.
Shout out to the Chevy driver AND the tractor driver for saving EVERYONE’s life. To even mention charges for the tractor driver is disrespectful and preposterous. Smh
No charges but he failed as a driver. He panicked and just kept going on the road. He should have gotten into the grass to slow himself down. Hitting a random rock in better than a bus full of kids. No charges but I wouldn't hire him for my company.
@@jbeyond7402 but set aside your right but also pay the truck damage and his job in return but in the end we already see the results and the outcome everyone is safe the truck driver face penalties for not checking the brakes he didn't lose a job or probably face disciplinary trials. @@jbeyond7402 at 45mph with an old truck and a full load, the grass would have yanked his wheels right out from under him. He might have flipped onto the cars in the oncoming lane. He chose the only option he had, as far as I can tell.
Anyone that doesn't understand the mention of charges for the tractor trailer driver, understand this: Before you drive your commercial vehicle, you are required to perform a Pre Trip Inspection. This means going around the vehicle, making sure everything is safe and in working order. Lights, tires, brakes, any components on the vehicle, all need to be functional and have a log that shows that you inspected it every single time you drive. One of the things you test is your brakes, and on big vehicles like this, typically that involves air brakes. You have to test that your air brakes don't lose air when held down, that they hold when applied, that they build pressure back up to the required PSI within a certain threshold, and that they stop smoothly without pulling to the left or right. Long downhill grades using only the brakes can cause brake fade or failure, which can cause a situation like this video. I know downshifting is an option that allows your transmission to help slow the vehicle, and I know engine braking is also an option, but my knowledge of engine brakes is limited since I only drive a school bus currently. Just remember, 80,000 pounds is a lot of weight and requires a lot of braking force to stop. Those brakes get hot, and they stop working as well. Sorry for the long, all over the place, comment.
@Anxious Opossum also things happen these machines are man made anything can go wrong with them at any given time meaning after inspection . Situations like this happen all the time and know one is at fault it’s how you handle the situation while in it . That’s why they also teach you about Counter steering Out of of accident or road hazard if something should occur “ this is exactly what everyone did in this situation” So give praise no one came out Gone or hurt, properly damage can be replaced not Lives.. But we all know someone gotta take the blame for what happen, just to make it look all good on paper…
This doesn't really apply to this accident. Breaks were not hot as there wasn't any smoke in the video so that is ruled out. The brake tests you are describing are really to test for air leaks. This truck didn't have this problem otherwise the brakes would have set and stopped the truck as soon as the air pressure dropped to an unsafe level. This is a complete failure, in the past, people would say maybe brakes were out of adjustment but these days we have auto adjusting slack adjusters that can't or shouldn't be done manually. That leaves random mechanical failure or poor maintenance which would fall on the company, not the driver.
There is another video that shows more from the tractor, where you can clearly hear what sounds like the air pressure warning buzzer. So it is very possible an airline blew as he applied the brakes.
In certain countries there's a safety driving course these big truck drivers must take . They're taught that they MUST run the vehicle off the road or crash it into something even at the cost of the drivers" own lives. If u hit someone u can be jailed for like 20yrs +. Im not sure if this is a law in the USA or certain states but maybe this is why they might be trying to press charges against him
The Driver should be Charged as well he should have been paying attention & tried to slow that truck down he’s not a Hero if the Brakes were bad on that truck that truck should’ve never been on the road I drive a truck he could’ve tried downshifting that truck to get it slowed down I think he wasn’t paying attention til it was too late to stop yeah him & the pickup driver avoided a bad situation but that truck driver could’ve done more to stop the truck no one should ever pass a School Bus I drive a Truck myself currently & I used to drive a School Bus people who pass a School Bus on the left side shouldn’t be driving it’s a deadly mistake if a Child gets hit

Had that man not made the one critical calculation to back his truck into the vehicle behind him to make space, this would have been a totally different, tragic scenario.
You can replace a car - you cannot replace lives the car behind him was his best bet in case the semi truck veered off into the property to the left - thank god everyone is okay the trucking company just needs to make sure it doesn’t happen again
He had plenty of time to pull into the right side. The white car was already thinking the same thing and he kept them both in partial danger had the semi not been able to turn back.
Mannn I can understand charges against the company, but the driver CLEARLY did all he could do in that situation so I would hate to see anything happen to him. Kudos to him for everyone being alive.
Some can say he could of crashed the vehicle in the ditch or anywhere off road but that would most likely cause his death and probably someone else's too
The driver did all he could at that moment, but was probably responsible for inspecting the vehicle to make sure everything was working properly, and may be at fault for not doing all the safety checks before driving. (But it’s also possible he could have followed all the proper procedures and there was nothing he could have done to prevent the incident)
@@lilliematthews7922 Is he supposed to inspect the break while the truck is moving. You can do an inspection before you start out and have every thing look good, crap happens when an 80k pound truck is in motion.
@@avenger007007 Yep, as I said, he could have followed all proper procedures and had no way of preventing the incident. Why in the world should the tractor-trailer driver be charged? It’s not his fault his brakes went out, and you can audibly hear the terror in his voice when he realizes he can’t stop. If anything, the company that owns/maintains the vehicle should be charged, but definitely not the driver.
FMCSA regulations requires every truck driver to perform a pre-trip inspection before that truck starts rolling (some state DOT's even requiring each inspection to be in written form and signed off on). such an inspection would include testing your service brakes to verify there is no pressure bleed and that air pressure can properly build up to operational PSI. if he did a proper inspection, then he wouldve definitely noticed that there was a problem. if his brakes just "went out" like he claims, then that means he had a massive air bleed which a pre-trip inspection wouldve caught. otherwise what he experienced wouldve been brake fade, which is the result of going too fast and not properly paying attention to your surroundings to give yourself enough time to react and stop.
@@MasterOfTruckyour name is master of truck, but i hope you know if your brake are bleeding air in any capacity for while the brake will engage due to the lack of air most compressor on truck cant keep up with air leak. If he had a massive air bleed before leaving the truck wouldnt even move.
@@hugoseguin8040 the rate which air builds varies from truck to truck. its possible to have air bleed and still hold some pressure under these circumstances. im not saying the bleed is so bad the pressure is near 0. i was being generous with my point to explain how the brakes "went out" as the driver claimed because its plausible that the truck was able to hold enough pressure for the brakes to release and get it rolling, but trying to apply the service brakes would cause a significant increase of air loss from the bleed, making the brakes feel spongey and inoperable under the condition that there was still enough air to not release the emergency. when bobtailing, something like that can feel negligible due to the significant lack of weight. but pulling a loaded trailer is what made the issue far more apparent when the brakes need to hold more pressure and work harder.
Hopefully the company pays any fees for the pickup driver if he dented the front bumper of the car behind him. Obviously the dude is happy to be alive, but he shouldn’t have to take a financial hit or have his insurance raised for a life saving ‘dent’ lol
I understand some people saying the driver was supposed to check the trucks brakes before he went but what if he did and they worked? Like this clearly wasn’t the beginning of his trip they must have been working to begin with and gave out along the way. I don’t think the driver should be at fault because the companies who make these trucks should know better, and with the technology we have today, do better.
Good example of everyone around trying to work together in a difficult situation to do what they can do to help, in order to avoid disaster, instead of having an attitude that it's someone else's responsibility.
God bless all the people there they definitely avoided a catastrophe for sure. I’m a maintenance mechanic and no matter with a pre trip inspection it’s wear and tear machines fail.
Wow. & of course our society wants someone to face charges for this, even though no one was hurt of hit, and the driver clearly stated the brakes failed.
Preventative actions, like charging the driver or the company, keep people alive. He got lucky because everyone involved was stopped and aware of his presence, people committed moving violations to cede roadway to a runaway vehicle that would’ve killed 4 or 5 children in front of their parents, there was even property damage to two vehicles. This is a video demonstrating luck and the need to be vigilant as others are irresponsibly driving and putting your life at risk. Wait for the day a semi brushes up against your sideview mirror at 60 mph, centimeters being the only space between you and the pulverizing force that is a runaway tractor trailer. We don’t NEED truckers if their irresponsibility causes scenes like this, especially considering the driver didn’t use engine breaks that even a rookie would know to use.

🏅Semi driver was laying on that air horn, he did everything to avoid catastrophe, nobody was hurt, he did great! Pickup driver deserves a medal! Holy f*k! Everyone involved did great. If the trainee bus driver did move ahead the bus would not have gained enough speed to avoid collision in time. Someone was looking down on everyone that day. My nerves r still in shock! I hate that they would even think to press charges on that driver after viewing that video evidence. If you ask me, he is one of the best drivers out there! He thought to alert everyone around him once he realized the issue & remained in as much control as he could of the situation, had super quick reflexes and decision making skills and managed to avoid a catastrophe and saved countless lives that day. 🏅 P.S. Just my opinion here but the media should have phrased that differently, rather than the way they said it, they should have just said something like "the police r investigating to see if charges, if any, will be filed" or something not pointing such direct blame at the driver who obviously did not in any way shape or form do that on purpose.
This folks shows you a very good reason why self driving trucks shall not be allowed. I HIGHLY doubt a supercomputer would’ve done the same horn warning and maneuver. Heck, I doubt the other cars/trucks would’ve moved as well with self driving computers.

It crashed about 100 m after zooming past our vehicle; no serious injuries.
Shouldn't charge the driver nor company if the cause of the brakes were faulty at that time. There are possibilities parts can go bad during transit after inspections. You can't prevent everything.
They have to investigate if the breaks were actually faulty. Drivers have claimed their brakes failed but have put themselves in the situation where the breaks overheat and could have avoided it.
The driver? May get charges? We can all see he was attempting to stop in plenty of time. We can all see it took another 1/4 mile to stop. And we all know he doesn't deserve any charges most importantly, because we all heard him.
Another article on this stated charges may be pending against the driver because he drove the truck to a maintenance yard right after this. Guy was probably still in shock and figured it was wise to get that truck to the maintenance yard pronto. That decision may cost him.

Careful look at the sequences of the video shows that the Mack truck driver actually _sought to avoid the school bus,_ long before he got close to it. He changed lanes very *early on,* allowing the Chevy driver to see that the tractor trailer was heading in his direction, thereby prompting him to reverse his pickup. It appeared as though he would have struck the dark Chevy pickup more immediately rather than the school bus, because the truck was heading straight in the direction of the Chevy pickup. So, in a way, the Chevy driver actually saved himself more immediately than he did the nearby vehicles. Still, who knows; had the Mack truck collided with the Chevy pickup, there might have been residual/recoiling movements of both the Mack truck and the Chevy from that impact, possibly causing the trailer of the Mack truck to move in an unpredictable direction, including one that could have impacted the school bus.
It doesn’t help though. School bus was on STOP and children were boarding/de boarding . He could’ve easily hit a child who was about to cross the road.
@@ragashankar The Mack truck driver's actions, of course, made a difference - just as I described. He changed lanes well ahead of approaching the school bus and the dark Chevy pickup. _On top of that,_ he kept honking the loud horns of the truck. Those actions allowed the Chevy driver to be alerted to a heavy hauler heading straight for him, and hence, giving him time to reverse his pickup. Reversing the pickup, in turn, gave the Mack truck driver a chance to avoid colliding with the Chevy pickup [and posdibly the school bus], no?
@@Lamin_G I get it. But kids are kids. They don’t listen to honks and run towards the bus/home as soon as their stop comes. This could’ve ended very Bad either way. Luckily, there were no kids crossing during that time.
@@ragashankar Well, luckily no kid was walking about near the bus or the road. Word is that the Mack driver's *brakes failed* on him, which is presumably why he couldn't stop or slow down the truck. That's where the investigations come in, to determine why the truck's brakes failed in the first place, and who-if any-might have been responsible for making sure that they worked properly during haulage.
That's why you don't sit there with your head down watching a phone waiting for traffic to pass or the bus to move or whatever. You should always be aware of your surroundings and what's going on so that you can have time to react. Kudos to the pickup truck driver for paying attention.
There are several things that can cause brake failure on a truck some are unforseeable and can fail without warning even if the brakes are adjusted and the driver performed a pre trip inspection.
That means 1 of 2 failure scenarios had to be a factor on brake failure on both the truck and the trailer and the only one possible is the brakes weren't properly adjusted! Here's why...The other scenario would be that just about half of the SPRING BRAKES on the drive axles on the truck and trailer axles would have to be broken and not doing their job in this emergency! Springs don't need air to function, they only need enough air to hold the brake shoes off the brake drum! So are you telling me that he had to have missed that many broken Spring Brakes in his brake chambers that morning, or did he just indicate that everything was acceptably safe to operate in his inspection so he could keep working? Not going to convince me! The truck was unsafe to be on the road! Yes he "Guided IT" around the obstacles but he did not have control because he could not stop the truck!
@@bradcliff7099 Single chamber brakes will roll freely if air leaks off or doesn't go past the supply tank on the trailer , double chambers will lock down and not move another possibility depending on what type of chambers could be a valve on the trailer bypassing the tank and not feeding the chambers if they were single chambers and if you listen closely to the video it sounds like the low air warning light was sounding off , I have personally had a trailer with single chambers and the red button popped out or wasn't pressed and you get the surprise of no brakes until you press it back in .

This is why I stop a ways away from the bus even if I’m on the opposite side of the road. I mean it’s not exactly why but more of a “you just never know” thing.
Steering the semitruck completely off the road for the sake of the children never occurred to the driver. More safety training required. Here’s an idea: let the trucker keep his job but reassign him to teaching truck safety at the company using this and other learning-moment dashcam videos recorded by the company (and videos recorded by the entire industry, eh) to other truckers which will be more prone to listen to him than some trained “trainer”.
@@pinchekittybiker Semi truck dashcam video at 01:25:01 clearly shows a path off pavement to the right between telephone poles across an open field. To the left, truck-stopping pine forest. Conjecture my butt. The driver chose the worst possible path and should be fired, at the very least.
@@fluxfaze Looks like you didn’t hear when she said “quarter mile down the road” before the timestamp you posted, because there was no pavement to the right when they were at the school bus. It’s either they crash or maneuvre around them.

MAYBE he didn't know the brakes were out by then, otherwise... that would've been optimal place to ditch. Either way, the guy got SUPER lucky and clearly had at least some skill, to make that swerve without clipping anything was pretty sweet. I'd like to know WHY the brakes failed. Truck brakes, especially trailers (that I know of) are default on, meaning if something goes wrong in the system, the trailer brakes lock up before they fail. Someone else in the comments said the driver might have overheated them. If that's the case, then despite his luck and skill, he's still looking at at least losing his CDL for a while. I would think/hope.
This is a perfect example of how things are so f'ed up in this country. Here is video with audio of a truck driver expertly dealing with a nightmarish moment - having only seconds to avoid disaster. You can hear him pumping the brakes, downshifting, jostling the truck left and right looking for an avenue of escape, sounding his horn, his adrenaline going. He doesn't panic, or over-react. He deals with it, literally and figuratively head-on. Possibly saving lives. But wait, he's not heralded as a hero. The other pickup driver is, though. The truck driver may face charges. He didn't even knock over a mailbox. Now how f'ed up is that? Why would I want to be a truck driver? F that...
@@urlocaltweaker Only to the semitruck and trailer, and possibly its driver, but after some bouncing and slewing and sliding and possibly hitting trees it would have totally missed coming anywhere near as close to the busload of children as it did when he squeezed around within mere inches at 45 mph and extremely limited space to maneuver successfully. Take that driver off the road and let him continue working for the trucking company as a driving safety instructor utilizing his own dashcam video and other videos like it to teach other drivers safer driving skills than he’ll ever have.

@1:29 why didn’t the truck just quickly pull into the drive of the house he was outside? But then @1:35 the truck driver isn’t even in the same place, that driveway is way further back. Weird!
The first driveway you see at 1:29 has what looks like missing or broken concrete so you don't see it at 1:35 because its dark but you can see where the driveway ends up until that missing/broken area. You're confusing it with the neighbor's driveway in the second timestamp. Plus, you can see from the first timestamp that the truck really didn't have time to pull in any driveway as they just had enough time to back up into that SUV to get out of the way.
Press charges on the driver for what??? This clearly was a freak occurrence. Not everyone needs to be threatened with legal action. Technology and machinery are not perfect and are subject to malfunctions.
Everybody always says to just swerve off the road to avoid hitting anything, but the driver’s life was at stake too. In situations like these, your survival instinct takes over, and your main priority becomes self preservation. He also managed to avoid everyone, as to not bring any harm to anyone else. I’m impressed he was able to think that rationally at all. Everybody says that something’s obvious, but when you’re presently in the situation, nothing is obvious.
The driver of the pickup (Chevrolet Silverado 1500) didn't even care that he hit the white Cherokee, he had to do what had to be done to prevent a disaster.
