Thank you for pointing out the problem of dogs off leash. So many owners seem oblivious to the fact that many people do not want to have a dog in their face displaying varying degrees of aggression. Because they think their pooch is harmless they assume everyone else will feel safe too.

Also, you have to keep in mind. Dogs will literally go until they die If you let them . As a responsible human and pet owner you need to be able to make decisions that are in the best interest of the dog because the dog cannot do it on its own!!!

A 2023 thru hiker with me was bitten by a large lab. Couple were out hiking and as he approached them they said their dog was friendly but liked to jump. He cautiously approached, dog jumped, but instead of being friendly, it took a good chunk out of his arm. Folks day hiking forget, thru hikers smell, they are carrying large things on their backs and have these poles in their hands. Some dogs would feel threaten. While the bite was severe and required a trip into Urgent Care (couple did not offer to pay for the visit or even give him a ride) he was back on the trail in 24 hours. Several days later we encountered a large German Sheppard off leash, blocking the trail, next to two young children about 6 and 7. No parents in sight for ten minutes then finally they came strolling down the trail. By then our group had grown to 5 and several voiced their displeasure being blocked by this big dog and then to the parents for being irresponsible.

I have a 12 year old yorkie. He hikes with me. He loves it. But his limit is 5 miles. He did about half the Art Loeb trail with me. The biggest hazard we have encountered is dogs off leash. Well that and hurricane Fred.

As someone who has hiked the Long Trail in Vermont twice with my 48 pound hound mix I do have some experience hiking with a dog. There is no blanket statement of how any dog will do. There is a lot involved, size, breeds, age, temperament etc. My little hound mix will pretty much hike anyone to the ground and she loves the trail and camping. She loves to be outside. The things he will need to address and you did not even mention is the dogs gear, sleep system, rain gear, food etc and how this is all going to be carried. I tried her using a pack but it caused issues and hot spots. Sadly there is not a lot of great high quality products available. I ended up carrying all my dog’s stuff and that adds a lot to my pack weight. Every resupply day is like carrying 8 to 10 days of food. Plus her quilt, small pad, jacket, rain gear etc I am willing to do this because she is my best friend and a great trail partner. I switched from my Arc Blast to a heavier Waymark pack, it handles the weight better. The snakes are a real issue especially down south. If I was to do the AT with my dog I would start in January 1 or earlier. We are headed out to Colorado next year to do the CT and I am very much looking forward to it. Please remember all dogs are different. My dog would never bother you , she is to focused on her hiking. When in camp she needs her 10 hours or so of sleep. There was a company called Groundbirdgear and I am not sure if they are still in business. They made custom packs and sleep systems. I also feed my dog high protein and calorie food, I think puppy food would work too. Good luck and please address how you’re going to carry said gear and food. It’s been my biggest issue. Also I did not hitch rides because of my dog. I used the ride services posted on Far Out. Not all motels allow dogs and I alway paid an extra 30 to 40 dollars per night extra for the ones that do. You definitely have to not only take care of yourself but more importantly your dog. You have to ask yourself if it’s worth the extra effort. For me it is. Hell instead of flying to Colorado next summer I am driving. Have a great trip.

Dogs food I would be dry beef and beef fat out to help the dog with extra protein and fat a good sealed bag and bear proof storage for sleeping. Kibble is a must look for the highest protein and fat percentage per pound as you can. Your kneeling pad and break pad can work for the dogs sleep pad . Have someone customize a hiking quit for the dogs size. U may end up sleeping the cold nights with the dog in your bag for heat. Tick and flea med and get the dog a rattle snake bite vaccination for help if this happens.
@andreameigs1261
@andreameigs1261 8 месяцев назад
@mtadams2009 There's a rattlesnake 'vaccine' for dogs that will give you time to get your dog to the vet for treatment if it gets bit. We have a LOT of them in the west, and they blend in really well. It would be easy to miss their warning sound for any number of reasons (wind, water, inattention, fatigue). If you see one, and you know where it is, it's not a big deal and you can just avoid it. You should make sure you have your dog trained well enough to avoid them. Perhaps even get a dead one with the rattle that you can rattle and train the dog to come to you, and give you a signal when it sees one. That's actually a really good idea, and I'm going to do that with my dog. I was going to say you should train the dog well enough to be called away from the snake, but chances are, the dog will notice the snake before you do, so you want to teach the dog to avoid the snake of its own accord...teach the dog to make the right decision, rather than just being told what to do. I am against shock collars, but I think a very conservative and PROPER use of a shock collar to teach the dog that it should avoid snakes could perhaps be justified, but I'd rather just teach the dog to tell me that there is a snake, because that way I don't need to shock my dog for any reason and it also helps protect me, because the dog can then communicate the danger to me as well as avoid the danger itself. ALSO- YOUR DOG can get altitude sickness from just driving to colorado. I have lived my whole life at 4,000 feet. I drove to avon (about 8,000 feet) in 12 hours. When I got there, I had a headache and a lack of energy. Sometimes people fly there to go skiing or they go to hike and they DIE from the altitude. Often they feel fine at first. SO PLEASE, when you get to colorado, take a few days for you and your dog to rest. Your dog can't tell you that it has a headache. The best thing would be to get to altitude slowly and then rest for a few days once you get there.

@@ISuckatHikingHi again, I don’t know if you have ever watched this channel called The Most Important Step but i highly recommend you check it out. It’s a young woman who hikes with her two dogs and does serious big miles. She did the the CDT and many more and has lots of videos about hiking with your dogs, gear, training and probably the most important the care of your dogs paws. When I hiked the LT I ran into two people who were getting off the trail with their dogs because of paw issues. My dog fortunately did not have any issues but I will definitely take her tips out to Colorado this summer. I hope you and your trail friend have a great AT hike. Take care

The Yellow Deli has multiple locations, one of which is in Chattanooga Tennessee, next to the college campus. They are FOR SURE a cult and were forced out by State police and told they were not to enter again for 30 years. Then in 2008, after the ban was no longer active they returned to build their new store as stated before. If you’re a solo female hiker it might be better to find another place to sleep. I’ve been cornered before by employees while going to the bathroom. Be very very aware. In regards to the dog, as a vet tech, please please PLEASE be extremely cautious. Dogs don’t always show signs of exhaustion right away, and the miles you have to average daily, even in a standard time, will be incredibly difficult on your pup. They can die due to excessive exhaustion, and they go down hill quickly once it starts. I would honestly say do NOT take the dog. Go on weekend hikes with them, but a consistent trip where you will be gone a minimum of 3 months (as stated) is truly pushing your luck and your dogs safety.

Btw, I don’t want to sound like I’m bashing. I absolutely ADORE seeing good puppers on my hikes/weekend trips. There’s nothing better than feeling like your in the pit mentally during you’re hike and then this cute little fluffy excited thing comes tromping up to you and it lifts your spirits. 😍 I just want your dog to be safe! There is nothing more heartbreaking than an owner who made an innocent mistake and it costs their dog their life. We hate to see it.

I hiked around a few dogs this year that finished the trail. More started the trail, but many dropped out or got sent home. All the people that finished with a dog did shorter miles because of the dog. Most of the dogs that did finish did seem to enjoy it and were still wagging and happy to go at the start of each day. Their families took a lot of zeros to give them rest though and weren’t able to do the big mile challenges. You know your dog, you will know if he is having a good time and when/if it is time to send him home. I hiked some with my dog this year on my thru hike, but knew he was just doing short sections and would go home to rest. I never planned for him to do the whole trail. I knew he couldn’t do the Smokies or Baxter State Park. I also knew the rocks in PA would be hard on his feet and that the cliffs and ladder climbs from NY on weren’t possible because he weighs 90lbs. Owners did a lot of lifting and carrying dogs in harnesses and that wasn’t possible with him. He added a LOT of difficulty to my hike when I was already stressed and exhausted at the beginning. Even though we had done a couple of shorter thru hikes already -Foothills Trail and the Palmetto Trail and had probably close to a 1000 miles of hiking the year before, including all our day hikes. A dog just adds several extra layers of difficulty (and mud) to something that is already so hard. I love hiking with my dog and he loves hiking and camping and was very upset when he got sent home. I felt bad leaving him at home when I got too far away from home for my husband to bring him to me on trail. Good luck with your dog it sounds like you have an energetic breed and already have a lot of experience hiking with him.

This channel is great. I am new to making hiking a majority of my time this new year. I do have miles from ruck marches while in the Marine Corps. The way i see when it comes to progression is similar to a 3 mile run in a PFT. When the last person in the group passes the start line is when the clock starts for everyone. Then i would gradually pass everyone until the finish/start line. Finishing 2nd in a group of 30 some Marines. 19:30 minutes but it takes an 18:00 for a perfect score. I was not exhausted but the number 1runner was finishing around 17 minutes. Going to do the MST soon. The planning has to be harder than the trudge. The faster you go than you burn more energy. Carbs in the morning and protein at the end of day. Burn carbs and build with protein. A bland meal for the most part is what i expect but don't leave out a multi-vitamin. Lack of vitamins leads to sickness. Speaking about bad diet, do not eat junk food because your output will fill like dog poo and ruin your enjoyment of a trail

If the dog is fine with having a small pack on to carry it's own food and a sweater and a pair of dog booties..... covering 15 miles a day, ad infinitum, it's fine. If it's trained for that, it's fine.....but if it isn't this is bad. 120 days without deep hiking experience, is crazy.

I am not sure why you would say that. Like humans dogs are not the same. My dog loves the trail and is extremely fit. She loves the forest, stream and camping out with her human. She had done well over thousand miles and I have never met a human who could hang with her. She will run them to the ground. When not doing long trail hikes we hike eight miles a day in the forest near our homes. I understand some dogs are not long distance hiking dogs but some certainly are. She gets very excited when she sees me packing my pack at home, she knows a long hike is coming. We will be doing the Colorado Trail this summer and I positive she will do great. Take care

You have mentioned that you wished you had taken more photos of the trail and the people you met along the trail. Keep A journal of each day, include real names along with trail names of the people you meet, and where they come from. Take photos and label them. I am amazed that I have forgotten many of the guys I served with in the Army, because we called each other by their last names. I used to know their real names, but have forgotten most of their names, even their last names after fifty years. Wish that I had kept A journal during my time in the Service, just a brief entry for what happened that day.

You've commented a few times that Leo has "100 miles on trail" with no issues, but that's an overall total, done over more than one trip, and not even remotely the same thing as nearly 2,200 miles in 120 consecutive days. You've also mentioned several times that he's a "trained service dog," but that doesn't translate into the ability to walk 2,200 mountain miles in 4 months. (It makes me wonder, too -- but of course I would not expect you to address this, it's nobody's business -- about the nature of the condition you have that requires a service dog, and how that might affect your very ambitious goal.) Wishing you and your pup the very best, and I'll be looking out for your videos, and cheering you along, but I'll join the chorus of "please leave Leo at home." This was a great episode, very helpful not just for Michael, but anyone preparing for a thru hike for sure! Michael, I love dogs, I have a dog, and she hikes and backpacks with me, but no way would I torture her on a thru hike. She just can't do the miles needed to finish it. It's just way too much to ask of a dog. And you want to do 2000 miles in 4 months, that's a LOT of daily miles for a dog. Plus, there are sections where dogs are not allowed. What do you do with the dog when you need to go to a grocery store to resupply? Dogs aren't allowed in grocery store. Or restaurants. Or a lot of hotels or hostels. Logistics of town days with a dog sounds like an absolute nightmare. And then there's snakes and bears and sharp rocks and weather and... If you do end up taking the dog, please have a full pet first aid kit and an emergency sling with you so you can carry him out relatively easily if necessary. I have a Fido Pro sling and hope I never have to use it. Doodle dogs are very keen to please their people and he may not tell you he's not feeling well until it's too late. It's really a lot to ask of him. Be prepared and have a plan to get him home. Good luck Michael! I think you can do this in the 120 days you want. If you leave the dog at home.

@@ISuckatHikingabsolutely! Coming from Florida I'm sure you are well versed about parasite prevention. If you find that your dog is still getting ticks, you can safely add a Seresto collar to repel them alongside your oral flea/tick prevention. And hopefully you have the heartworm prevention too. You should definitely consider taking some dog first aid supplies and possibly some basic meds (NSAID'S and anti-diarrheals especially) if your vet will write a prescription for them. You can always ask. Dogs are definitely prone to giardia so watch him around unfiltered water sources. Giardia is one thing that will knock a dog out of a hike because it can cause dehydration really fast. Also consider foot coverings/boots for him if you haven't already. Easily overlooked (or mistaken for something trivial) are the preliminary signs of canine dehydration, chronic fatigue, or an underlying soft-tissue injury, particularly with an older animal. These signs can easily be glossed over given the fixation becomes taking care of oneself.

I've got a larger dog and a smaller dog that I take on shorter walks in the woods and overnight hikes. I'm in Western Pennsylvania. Depending on the time of year, they'll both come back with a lot of ticks. They've got short hair so I pick them off and brush. Sometimes I'll find more up to 2-3 days later. We all get away with them not digging into us, or digging in and staying there too long, by showering daily. If you hike the AT with a dog like a Labradoodle, sleep in a tent with it most of the time, and don't take showers for days at a time, I would think your chances of getting Lyme increases exponentially.

Seems to me, that one of the points of doing the AT is measuring yourself alongside other people also doing the AT. Not in a competitive way, but in a shared experience type of way. So if you take the dog, you are already putting yourself in a different category. You will have, unlike others, a measure of emotional support. You will have a means to always have something on your side. Something that blocks the possible loneliness. Something that marks you out as "special", something that other people will be forced to interact with. Comes across as rather insecure, you are taking a comfort blanket.

As a successful AT through hiker, I look forward to following the adventures/journey of the new class and this year is shaping up to have some stellar performers. I try when possible to support them with VENMO as well posting likes and comments. I found this gentleman intriguing and he put out some pretty good early gear/training videos, so I was surprised when I checked his channel on 21 Feb (his start date) to find he is now requiring membership to view any of his actual on the AT videos. I know $1.99 isn't much, but is this the way of the future supporting through hikers or is this just a one off?

I remember BadBat telling me that. OG a through hiker just in front of me was bitten by a dog requiring a visit to a medical clinic. Dog was on leash and the owner said it was friendly but it took a very large bite out of OG’s arm. If you want to hike with your dog, go for it. You have some difficult ascents and descents coming that require two hands.

Most all dog experts and professionals, whether they're dog trainers, behaviorists, veterinarians, ethical breeders, etc all agree that breeding and purchasing golden doodles is highly unethical (like most designer dogs). Anyone can look into this, which I highly encourage, but because basically all golden doodles come from backyard breeders they typically suffer from behavioral issues. Maybe his dog is from a shelter or rescue, in which case it's not unethical. But everyone else please never support golden doodle breeders, it causes suffering to the dogs 💔

Just keep your dog on leash, please. The idea that you’re going to see every hiker before your dog runs up to them and recall them is not realistic. You’re going to be looking at a view, vlogging, going up a hill that your dog is already on the other side of, etc. and you’re not going to see those other hikers. Plus, as you said, the dog does 2x your miles when they’re off leash, and at your expected pace that’s brutal for the dog. The one thing not mentioned in terms of animal encounters are porcupines. You definitely don’t want your dog to end up with a face full of quills. I have two dogs. I’ve had dogs all my life. But dogs on the AT are a pain. Especially dogs off leash or even on leash around shelters. Why? I’ve had an off leash dog pee on my pack that was leaned up against a tree. I’ve had an off leash dog stick it’s nose in my food. I’ve had an off leash dog at a shelter jump into the shelter and curl itself onto the sleeping bags. I’ve had wet, muddy dogs leashed at shelters shake themselves dry, getting mud all over the place. In terms of shelters, to do big mile days you need time on the trail. The big shortcut is sleeping in shelters so you don’t have to pitch and pack up a tent. But a big dog in a shelter isn’t good trail etiquette for reasons mentioned above. So when the weather is wet and cold, day after day, you’re going to have to keep pitching your tent if the shelter isn’t empty / almost empty, or just piss everyone off with your dog and entitlement to use the shelter. 17.5 MPG average + daily setup/take down of tent + vlogging/editing + managing a dog… good luck.
