What’s it like to hike and live in the backcountry for 5 months? Host and thru-hiker Kyle O’Grady (aka Kyle Hates Hiking), who has completed every last step of the Appalachian Trail, interviews other thru-hikers, peak-baggers, and backpackers who are almost as crazy as him. Is life while thru-hiking really as glamorous as the social media stars make it out to be? Is pooping in the woods really that big of a deal? Find out these answers and more on Trail Tales.

On through hiking kids, I think it's like anything else...on one extreme it could verge on abusive to force a through hike on a kid, especially if they're also forced to carry too heavy of a pack. But there's the other side, children can and do discover interests on their own. I have 4 children and have always hiked, amongst other outdoor activities, but only recently took an interest in backpacking. And my 10 year old daughter wants to go just as much as I do! She begs!!! She watches RU-vid and many of the same things I do too! Though, until I have more experience (and money for a new kit for 2!) I won't be taking her. My biggest concern is making sure she doesn't carry too much weight. Never even considered what other people on the trail might think of a young child on trail...

I have scoliosis in my lower back and sitting on the ground for any period of time is painful. I reluctantly took a chair on a backpacking trip once and realized that it was worth it, because the next day I was able to get up and hike out without pain. I don’t know if I’d take it on long trips where I’d just be hiking or sleeping, but a trip where I might be sitting and talking I would find it worth it. As a younger person I know I would have scoffed at bringing a chair. As a 47 year old I had to grudgingly admit that the extra pound was worth being able to stand up straight the next morning. If I went with Kyle’s opinion that once I need a chair I’m going to stop hiking I would miss out on some good fun. I mean I don’t NEED it, but it extends the number of days I can comfortably hike.

A pack liner is the way indeed, but I also like to bring a pack cover just to have a ground cloth for the bag and keep it clean. It does add weight but that's no issue when bike packing for example.

His description of miles in hiking in the Grand Canyon is ALSO TRUE OF YOSEMITE VALLEY and taking hikes up the canyon walls. The signs posted give a distance, which when hiked feels more than twice as long as the distance posted. I have hiked other steep trails NOT IN NATIONAL PARKS and on those hikes the distances posted seemed to match the distance felt from hiking. I believe this occurs because in these national parks the distance for trail distances are calculated from map and or arial photographs and is not derived by walking the actual trails with a wheel to measure the distance exactly, so on these very winding twisty canyon wall trails the distances posted are probably 2.5 times shorter than the actually distance.

THIS IS STRANGE! I know of 3 people who’s last name is Hanson, all not related, and they all make the same fatal life destroying mistakes! One is a relative who is a miserable person no one would want to be around, who creates and spreads wild accusations endlessly. The other is the Hanson that works for NASA and is probably the biggest voice in climate science and he sees climate collapse everywhere he looks and is spreading wild accusations, not the truth. This Hanson, from the park rangers point of view, went on a hike with friends into an incredibly dangerous situation, had a team member nearly die, was incredibly lucky enough to have a inexpensive route to a hospital to be saved and the apparent leader of this failed expedition, Hanson, is constantly in total denial of the danger and great luck they encountered. The rangers DO NOT want this video being seen by other people because they KNOW that it will lead to other people trying to do the same thing! They see airing this failed mission as MURDER, and to an extent they are CORRECT! Flying a helicopter into this situation could have been outrageously DANGEROUS, the altitude at the rims of the Grand Canyon are above 7,000 feet, helicopters don’t function well at high altitudes. The winds generated from a helicopter could cause avalanches and may also be the cause of glaciers melting in some places, where it’s attributed to global warming! If people start visiting the Grand Canyon during snow seasons all these dangers would KILL PEOPLE! The rangers probably also knew the great amount of experience your team had when issuing your permit and were then very disappointed that you would have a person on your team that was not healthy enough to make the trip, then they imagine this kind of hiking becoming popular with the general public and see rangers and rescue people they know dying because of all the rescues they have to do. The permitting of hikers into the park maybe a process dictated by law that they must follow and have no jurisdiction or control over! Hanson, face the FACTS!😢

The government officials that did this should have to personally reimburse the government for the cost of all this nonsense. They frivolously cost the taxpayers, and our economy, tens of thousands of dollars. Maybe more! Yet, they want to charge someone personally for life flight services. How do we fix this mess of a system?

In the late '70s, I was ticketed for illegal camping RMNP near Longs Peak, which I was to start climbing the next morning. The Ranger that first spoted us had been in town and was drunk as he gave us our warning. Two hours later he returned half sober and now in uniform to give us our ticket. We moved ourselves to the Longs Peak trailhead and hid ourselves in our sleeping bags till daylight. The ticket was only $35 then.

Prosecutors don't play a role in your sentencing process they convict you guilty or not guilty then the jury will make a recommendation for the sentencing when the judges decides definitely can have a lot to do with how you act in the courtroom

@hugh_jorgan633 3 дня назад
Nobody gets one year for the for this and I don't know what state you're in but the maximum fine for that type of a crime and where I'm from is $2,000 he's the first offender so I mean cops do this kind of shit all the time try to charge people for shit that they borderline didn't do and people just rolled over for it but nobody's getting a year in jail for that shit unless they really screwed up in court and pissed off the judge things like this you don't you don't you don't take the plea bargain if it's if it is 5 years probation because that's just a trap
@hugh_jorgan633
@hugh_jorgan633 3 дня назад
This is a real thing out there running the law enforcement people that write tickets to people that are way worse than what they should get can you combine that with the prosecutor that goes along with it and then judge that rides your ass for bail money and you got something that's a major pain in your ass this is a problem all over our country but I mean you don't really need a bunch of money to dig in and fight this you can do it without a lawyer just got to have balls and all a little bit about line you can fucking stand in front of these rangers and make them look like who they are you got to realize that any prosecuting office has a budget and if you request to go to trial on something like this and actually stand your ground on it and do the full omnibus hearing and everything that prosecutor is going to have to justify spending a couple hundred thousand dollars in man hours trying to prosecute you on something that they might not even be able to get so chances are they're going to drop it or give you a really sweet plea bargain I would have took that sucker all the way to the trial phase on the other hand if you're busy and you got shit going on just plead guilty take a plea bargain it's not that big of a deal it's not going to affect anything in your life
@hugh_jorgan633
@hugh_jorgan633 3 дня назад
A non-drug-related non-violent misdemeanor you could get a hundred of them and it's not going to affect anything in your life
@hugh_jorgan633
@hugh_jorgan633 3 дня назад
I'm not really sure why you're comparing other class b misdemeanors to the ones that you got charged with there's five different levels of assault the first three are misdemeanors it's really irrelevant but anyway your first appearance just called your arraignment and you're not on probation yet it's called bail you go on probation after you go to court and get convicted you could have paid a higher bail and not had any conditions to release how do you seriously not know this like this is just not a big deal at all you just you take this shit to trial and you beat it or you just say screw it and you plead guilty to it and you pay a fine it's a misdemeanor it's like a reckless driving ticket really not a big deal at all

Soooo glad someone brought up the "buy right or buy twice" thing I hate hearing all the time. The concept makes sense for someone who is able to hike hundreds of miles every year. But for the people like me who can only get the time off work to go on one or two short trips a year then there's absolutely no reason to buy the best and most expensive gear. Also, buying used gear is great way to get some of those better items without the high price tag. Half my gear is second hand and it works just as well as something fresh off the shelf from REI.

Power tripping is a real problem with some of these federal services. Some people join these services for different reasons. There are always power trippers who just go out of their way to be judge and jury. For a crime to be committed the first thing the prosecution has to demonstrate is that the person committing the crime had intent. It's the very first thing that judge assess. If you can't prove intent then the case just gets thrown out. If you could prove you were purposefully camping without a permit or purposefully camping at the wrong site with no mitigating circumstances. It seems that there were TONS of mitigating circumstances.
