Hey man i was just watching one of your old videos on spear fishing and hoping to get some answers for a few questions. Me and my mate have seen fish swimming close to shore in around 2m deep water and were wondering if we could dry fire a small spear gun at them from the shore line, or is that a huge safety risk. I also remember u saying thst the reason for the spear being lanched back at you was due to it reaching the end of the line at high speeds. Im ondering If when fireing the spear into close shallow water i will be safe. Another question i had was about the bad recoil. I noticed in those videos of people being hit in the face with the band or being hit by the recoil they had there face very close to there gun. Im intending on getting the point of the gun as close as i can to the fish. Would this be ok with my small, small powered gun.

Hi, never a good idea to shoot a speargun out of the water. What you need to take into account is the fact that a speargun is designed for underwater and to work in the density of water. You have to take into account the fact that air is 830 times less dense than water. Therefore, the gun will recoil way more out the water. Obviously you can lower the power to reduce the recoil then the spear will not travel as far or as fast when entering the water. Next problem, error of parallax. (google that if you do not know what it is) The fish you see in the water from the side of a river bank will not be where you think it is. It is much easier to use a bow and arrow that is available for shooting fish in water from out the water. The fish must be close to the surface for it to work.
