In this episode, Firewire sends down two of Machado’s latest performance fish called the “Seaside” for review.
I test this new model thoroughly in 1-5’ surf with Machado’s new Quad set up designed exclusively for the Seaside. After a couple weeks of surfing these two stock 5’2” fish-shaped boards, I was shocked at the level of high performance they can do.
I thought we were done shooting for this review as we captured great footage in epic surf as a Quad. Then, I thought, “How will this board go as a Twin Fin?” To my surprise, it went insane with Channel Islands new fin called AMK by Futures Fins. (Al Merrick Keel)
I highly recommend the new Machado Quad set designed for this board but, if you cannot afford the board and fins right away, no worries…. I tested this board with a normal set of Quads, and it goes good that way too.
The Seaside has a fish-type outline with a lot of foam under the chest for good paddling and low rocker for warp speed in 1-6’ surf. Don’t be fooled like I was by its outline…. this board looks like a cruiser, but the performance level is unmatched for a fish-type board from my perspective.
If you’re looking for a good Groveler in 1-3’ surf or a fun daily driver in 3-6’ surf with a fresh performance vibe in a fish package, then look no further. The Seaside is very versatile in wave range and fin options, coupled with Firewire’s Helium Technology, is very lively under foot and next level durability.
Enjoy the full review!!!

Great review, Noel, as usual. Ordered one last week after I watched it (it was the push I needed). Got the board yesterday and tested it today in 2-4 feet range with clean conditions. Absolutely love this board, got it after looking for a grovelling board with a bit of performance and finding this video. Heaps of speed, but holds rail really well. I slightly oversized it I think at 5'5 stock, I'm 6'0 and 83kgs, but the extra foam helps on the small days and I ride a monsta box when the surf gets better (4-5ft+) anyway. Struggles a tiny bit in choppy surf and wind (the extra volume relative to my usual defintely doesn't help) but on clean days this board is absolutely unreal. I use it with the quad machado fins, but have recently been trying it with the machado twins and had an absolute blast on the twins as well. Had it for 9 months and loving it, really durable!

I’m 6’0, 190lbs (86kg) and just picked up a 5’7 stock at 33L. We’re similar weight and you think the 5’5 is oversized? Haven’t gotten it in water yet but hoping I didn’t get too many liters. What are your thoughts on it years later?
@riles1088

@@bajafresk I have a 5'7. I'm 6'2, 86kg. It depends what you want it for. If you want it as a pure groveler then the 5'7 is epic and literally let's you lay turns in knee high weak surf that you would normally only longboard on. But the extra volume makes it way to corky in anything above 2-3ft. I'd go 5'5 if you want it more as a daily driver. Stick with 5'7 if you want it as a groveler.

Eamon Shields I think it depends on where you’re surfing. I’m east coast Florida so I’m usually in the 1-3 mushy wave range. A lot of reviews I watch are at really good consistent breaks where a 1-2 foot wave breaks really well and guys can easily tear it up. 1-2 foot waves here don’t break nearly as good. I would size up, get a little more volume and get into waves. Maybe even the 5’11 at 41L might not be bad. If you’re at a consistent break go for 5’10, if you want to catch more waves size up. The board flies though, very fast on entry.

Hi Noel I have a 5' 6'' seaside and love it's speed and drive. After riding it a few times with the original Rob Machado fins I bought some Dave Rastavich Quad fins and find they give more drive and hold in bigger waves especially. The Machado fins slide a bit on solid waves which is fun but I prefer the Rasta fins overall. I haven't tried it as a twin fin yet but will eventually. Great video on the seaside and fins

Great review, Noel, thank you! Just snagged at 5’11. Feels like a dream, just effortless. At 6’5 200 lbs, I have never realized just how hard I have been making it on my self by using an under volumed board. Duck diving in heavy, overhead, short period, beach breaks is a bit of a chore, but I wanted to maximize fun in shoulder high and below ( big waves scare me haha). Couldn’t be happier. The drive out of the first pump is insane, I watched back a video of my first session with it, and it was incredible the amount of projection the board gave on just one mediocre pump. Cheers!

@@garrywinthorp8939 what size are you looking at? I would say after some time riding the board, it felt like I might have sized it up too much(I may still have) but I swapped the front fins( the machado quads) for some normal large thruster front fins. It made a huge difference for me, pivoting was much easier, and I still felt like I had good drive and speed generation. I will be curious to also try it as a twin to see how that feels.

@@1nvisibleguy I am 6'5 210lbs and have had a 6'0 seaside for a couple of months and am wondering if i oversized it too... Mainly it feels like it sits too high and gets jittery in pushier, choppy waves. What is your surfing level and what do yo uuse the board for? I am working on pumping and only just starting to get into cutbacks, so i am wondering if the 6'0 is suitable for my jerry surfing or the 5'11 would be worth dropping down to? The 6'0 just feels wide
@1nvisibleguy
@1nvisibleguy 2 года назад
@@Stomperproductions well, its tough, I feel like this board is amazing in surf that you don’t need a mid length for, but nothing too fast and critical where you need a bit more rocker. Especially as a tall person with a naturally longer board that would have a longer and straighter rail. Have you watched Noel’s latest video on making a board work for you? That inspired me to try different fins, and it has helped a lot. For context, if it helps: been surfing on and off for 13 years, and I was riding a 6’0 dumpster diver (35ish L) before this for the past 3 years, and would say I am solidly just ok at surfing lol, cutbacks when the wave allows, and top to bottom surfing. I picked the seaside as a daily that would allow me to surf most north county San Diego surf. I would love to test drive a seaside at like 5’9 and see what that was like.
@Stomperproductions
@Stomperproductions 2 года назад
@@1nvisibleguy for me the desire to size down comes more from how high skittish the board is on faster waves rather than a fin specific problem. The 6'0 just has a lot of volume up front as well as a flat planing surface that really sits up a lot at higher speeds. I figured the board might calm down a bit and the rail would be easier to dig in with less volume. That being said, I guess it would also lose grovel power in the really small stuff, which at the end of the day is more what I have this board for ....

I'm sorry but this board should not be ridden in 6ft surf. Are you kidding? That's double overhead for a board that is essentially a refined Californian fish made for 2ft Malibu. Please take this out in 6 ft surf and let's see how it goes. I don't buy the marketing hype around this board and there are only a few dozen surfers on earth that could ride this in 6ft waves. They would still struggle to make it grip. It's just not made for the those kind of waves

Hey Noel - Great Shows! I'm 41, 5'10", 155/165 lbs (Summer/Winter weight) and am looking to get a Seaside, Glazer, and a Mashup. I've always loved Rob's surfing, and have a very similar build albeit with some more lean muscle on my frame. I've recently had a right hip resurfacing and surf goofy. Level before surgery was strong intermediate->advanced, and the shortest board I'd ridden to date was my custom Rusty Piranha which was 5'10" (Clark foam). My fitness level other than recovering from hip surgery is exceptional, as teaching martial arts and wilderness survival is part of my profession. My other boards are 6'1" and 6'3" custom Rusty "Pro-Jects" (also Clark foam) from 2003 for getting back into some muddy, brown, thick-lipped barrels during nor'easter season, should my hip allow for that again. I surfed the 6'3" in some deep winter barrels wearing a 6/4, hood, gloves and booties back when I weighted 167 back in my 20s. Now I'm looking to purchase some new boards to aspire to surf once back in the water and have some fun on in milder conditions. These "new" materials and shapes seem to allow boards to be ridden significantly shorter these days. That appeals to me, as I used to Skateboard professionally and was sponsored by Supreme back in the 90's-> early '00s, and would love a skateboard type feel in the water. I'll mainly be surfing Rockaway and Long Island on the east coast, and already have my high-performance shortboards dialed in. Since they were made before things were measured in liters, I don't have a reference point concerning that metric. What sizes would you recommend for me in the Seaside, Glazer and Mashup that would offer a more skateboard-type feel, paddle well and need to be pushed less than than my Rustys to cover surfing sloppy mush->just overhead and barreling in the summer/fall season? Looking for this new quiver to be as compact as I can go, and still have fun without going nuts (down the line, carves and turns, top to bottom and some laid-back barrels). From listening to you and researching this for the last couple of weeks, I'm thinking a 5'4" in each board would make sense, but I wanted to see what you'd have to say about that. Thanks for your time - I am really learning a lot from your presentations despite having surfed since I was 8 years old. You've got a great format and clearly love what you do! -Adam.

Trust me I've tried. But it's beautiful to watch for sure. I've been surfing only 3 years but pretty consistently (age 45 - weight 160 lb). Here's been my sequence of boards: 1) Wavestorm, 2) Torq 6.10 Fish (big epoxy log nearly cracked my skull open on second ride - never ridden again) 3) Liquid Shredder (went to softtop after Torq accident): 9.0 Longboard, 6'10" Mini-Mal, 5'8" Fish (Love them all still esp. the Fish with keel fins), 4) Firewire EVO 5.7 (way too much epoxy chatter on my messy local porto beachbreak, and broke into 3 pieces after one year) 5) Firewire Greedy Beaver 5.8 Timbertek - enjoying it - still trying to figure out how to ride such a narrow tail. NOW time for number 6! I'm trying to decide between Neckbeard 2 PU, Pyzel Phantom PU, and now thanks to your review, the Seaside. I'm looking to buy my first "real" performance board to challenge myself, but I do really love surfing my LS keel fin fish and your review made the Seaside look sooooo good (does Helium chatter like EPS boards?). Dammit. High class problems.
@surfnshowreviews7777
@surfnshowreviews7777 5 лет назад
P R Yes the Helium has some chatter to it. I don’t notice it much anymore. EPS goes well for me unless it really windy and there is a lot of texture on the water surface
@pr7286
@pr7286 5 лет назад
Thanks for the tip - I also think EPS is unforgiving if you ding it and don't repair right away - the EPS foam absorbs water and then the board starts to corrode from the inside and will buckle or break. Not sure if you agree with that. I'm defn gonna try PU Neckbeard 2 or Phantom next - and see if they hold up longer than the one year I got out of my EVO eps (that board had a small ding I missed and I think that destroyed it once water got in).
@surfnshowreviews7777
@surfnshowreviews7777 5 лет назад
P R I agree with EPS sucking in water if you don’t fix it ASAP. There is also Extruded Foam which is a closed cell foam that will not suck in water like the Expanded Polystyrene Foam does. Check out the XTR website and the Vlog I did with Javier from Epoxy Pro. Great information there....

Just wanted to add that I rode the Seaside with both the Machado Quads and the Controllers (Futures) For me as a bigger guy (200 lbs) i found the Controllers really helped settle the board down and give more drive. what up big brother - i am around the same weigh as you - 195-200lbs - and have been riding the machado quads since i bought the board. the board is a little loose by design especially with the machado quads. the SW swell here in HB the past few days we have seen 4-6 ft waves. i decided to throw in the al merrick keel fins with the machado quads to see if i could settle the board down. i gotta say -- i really like this combination. us heavier guys push a littler harder just because we have the weight -- with the machado quad side fins - i always had to watch how hard i turned because it would feel like i could slip out. with the merrick keels and machado quads i could seriously push as hard as i could and it never slipped - and had a ton of drive. super stable fin set up!

I've been using a 5'2 Seaside now for a few months. it's probably the fastest groveler i've had - ever. (after testing almost 50 different board models over the last few years) . confirming what Noel said: the flow and sensation of speed in small waves is unmatched. no effort needed at all. just a super fast, fun, easy glide . it's definitely more high performance than most fish types, but with the glide and flow of a classic flat bottom twin. it can do some nice rail turns and it will go vertical (nothing crazy radical), if it's not pushed too hard. it can get skatey at times, but it's part of the fun . this board makes me actually hope for waist-high surf. I'd definitely recommend it for whoever needs to get the stoke back on those groveling days..

figured i would add some input on this board. i am 5'10 and weigh around 195-200lbs - depends on the day lol. anyhow i purchased thw 5'8''@ 35 liters and i think it floats me very well. i think i could even have gone down to the 5'7''without any issues. i purchased the machado quads with the board and have been riding these fins with the board since i got it - maybe a year or so now? the machado fins work with the board - but the board felt like it was just a little too loose at times especially on steeper waves. yesterday and today in HB the waves were around 4-6ft and i slapped the Al merrick keel fins in with the machado quads. gotta say - i really like this combination. i didnt feel like i would slip out on turns, and it wasn't stiff at all. the board settled down a tad, and i could push really hard on the board without it feeling like it would slip out under me. would recommend anyone who is around my weight to try the merrick keels with the machado quads. i think with our weight the machado quads dont dig in as well as the merrick keels as they are a tad larger in area, height and length. the combo works well.

Hey Noel I am 5'11" and 170lbs. I have a lost PJ 5.5 -- 31.44CL (PU) that I love, and I am looking at the Seaside at 5'4" 29.8 L or 5'5" 31.5L. Because of the EPS, i am thinking the 5.4 as the extra float gets me up more around the feel of a 30ish CL board. I am in good shape and surf often. I surf local around here Pink House, Creek mostly, and sometimes Barbed Wires, Cottons or Uppers. What do you think? Thanks for all of the great info and reviews! Keep it up!
@surfnshowreviews7777
@surfnshowreviews7777 5 лет назад
C S I think the 5’4” will go fine but if it’s going to float like 30.3 liters you are going to loose about 1 liter in volume compared to your PJ. We are wearing a bit more rubber with winter here so that 5’5” isn’t sounding so bad. For your height the 5’5” might be a better call in smaller gutless waves. The 5’5” is still 6” shorter then you are so it should turn like a skateboard. I say 5’5” with a 4/3mm suit on. Cheers

Quick question. Love the look of this board, but I already have a Pyzel Phantom in slightly higher volume than my hpsb (about 0.5L more) which works great in waist / shoulder high and up. My local is a pretty hollow beach break, even when small. In your opinion, would a board like the Seaside add anything to my quiver?
@surfnshowreviews7777

Jan The Seaside is really fast and it would be fun to ride in some small barrels. I like a really short board in the barrel so you can maneuver it quickly and pump easy. Ricardo Laranjeira The Seaside has a performance vibe to it and it has a bit more traction for me compared to the Go Fish and I think you will love this Seaside. You can shred on it as a Quad or Twin. The RW is epic too and surfs more like a small wave performance Thruster. Hard to compare these two boards because they surf so different. If you want a small wave performance Thruster then go RW, and if you want a Quad/Twin shrewd sled and mess with fins a bunch go Seaside.

noutsmaile Use your Biscuit Bonzer as a guide in volume to get your Seaside volume right. They both paddle about the same with foam distribution. Obviously they don’t shred the same... and the tail on the Seaside is tapered down a lot more so it will be more responsive.

I watched your reviews on the lost hydra and seaside and loved both of them! I ended up with the Seaside as I couldn’t get hold of a hydra and like you i was fooled by the crusiy fish outline. 1st surf was in total onshore 2ft mush and it just shone! Was so surprised how fast it is, how performance it is and yet paddles in so easy and flys over the flat sections! Nuts. Totally happy with the seaside and cannot imagine that the Hydra would have been any better. I imagine when it gets bigger though that it wouldn’t be the best. Whats the biggest size surf have you taken it out in?

You can push the Seaside in 6’ surf. The Hydra is pretty limited to 1-2’ mushy surf. Good choice

Great review! Gieven that this is now a 5 year old review, would you recommend this over maybe the Great White, mashup or too fish?

Hi Noel, really great review. I’m a bit of a difficult fit for boards. • 5’ 7” in height, 175 lb, intermediate ability and 30 years of surfing experience. In pretty decent physical shape (exercise daily), but I’m a very stocky build so quite heavy for my height. Due to stockiness, I’m kind of a weaker paddler. Lately, I’ve been riding a Xanadu Pig 6’0 at 32 liters. It paddles great, but feels a bit large for my height. What length would you recommend? I was thinking 5’ 7” which is same height as myself? Or is that too long for this type of shape?

Eugene Sung I think 31-33 liters is a good range for you. I say 5’6” at 32.7

Noel, I surf at the east coast of Northland, New Zealand. We aren't privileged with point breaks but we do have the odd estuary bar break and beach breaks. The waves are generally in the 2-4' range and not often hollow. I am 62years young, 88-90kg of intermediate ability, advanced in my young years. I love the look of the Machado Seaside. I need decent volume, stability and the plan shape looks almost retro but very advanced in every other way. Do you think the 6'1" would be too small for me. I have surfed a short board of 6'6" with very similar volume. During the 70's my best surfing was done on a 6'4" twin fin made in NZ and then purchased a 6'2" MR twin fin which I loved.

Chris Findlay The 6’1” will be so much fun for you!!! A couple of my friends that are 60-70 years old got a couple and swear by them. They are catching lots of waves and having a good time. I say get a 6’1” with confidence and go Shred. Excellent paddler in extremely fun in small waves... even in beachies.

Great show and review mate!!!! I recently purchased this board, and I was wondering if this board can perform in very crappy surf during the summer or I will be better of by getting a proper Grover like a baked potato?? Thanks so much!!!!!!

I have a helium baked potato, 6'3, its great as a small wave mal substitute, but anything steep and curvy and the rails are just too fat, gets hung up at takeoff, no brainer or seaside would be my pick.

evo maniac Seaside.... no Brainer is a little to flat for waves with curve

Surf n Show Reviews re. No brainer, flatness does worry me. I’m after an under chest high groveller for curvy waves.im 6’3, 95kgs, nearly 60, int/adv surfer. I’ve had evos, which I loved, but didn’t paddle that great, chumlee, 6’5, sometimes insane, mostly too sensitive. Had puddle jumper, bit too HP.. leaning towards 6’1 seaside but worry about getting up on boards shorter than my height.. Have a 6’8 hydro short which I love for decent waves, need around 45lts. Prefer eps, love helium. Need something that paddles in well.

gio mel i say 5’6” it will float like 32 liters. Next time please give me the liters of the two Seaside boards you are trying to decide from. It saves me time... I answer questions all day long.

Gio I'm an inch taller than you but the same weight. I bought one of each. I use the 5'7 more than 75% of the time since the the waves here are usually short period and in the 2-4ft range. When it's 4ft+ I use the 5'6 since it is just easier to duck dive and has less width. I also opt for the 5'6 if it is a longer period (hurricane) swell. Both fly and perform amazingly well and if I ever had to chose between the two, I'd have a hard time. The 5'7 allows me to catch when it's 2ft which I wouldn't be able to do on the 5'6, but today for example we got a nice swell from tropical storm Isaias and it was 4-6ft and slightly choppy and I didn't think twice about grabbing the 5'6 since it is easier to duck dive. The 5'6 seaside was the perfect board for today. So it really comes down to the type of waves you want it for. Hope this helps.
