I used to be a sheet metal worker, I had an apprentice help me spot weld these big drawers. The welder stopped, so I told him to go to the boss and tell him we've run out of blue spots. Boss wasn't terribly happy with me, but laughed anyway.

If you don't have architect plans, an agreed strict timetable and budget, a building supervisor, or are personally onsite regularly, you can only cross your fingers and hope you hired the right "fully licensed" builder! 🧐 They rarely have those problems on "The Block"! 😄👍

Unfortunately that is happening here in Australia at the moment. There is a roofer waiting for his 60000 so he took his tiles back off of the roof

This is the reason, when we were buying a house approx 25 years ago, we bought an old established home built in the 70s. (Still living in it now, and no plans to ever sell). Even back then, when the construction industry was nowhere near as bad as it is now, I just wasn't impressed with the quality of the display homes we were looking at. No skirting boards, to my mind a must have in any home, walls not painted, 😳, shoddy looking doors, fittings, garden nothing but a sandpit with a couple of plants plonked in (here in Perth, which has very sandy soil). The houses had no character or soul. Left me cold. Now 25 years on, situation much worse with truly dodgy workmanship, businesses going under, and no certainty that you are ever going to have a completed house to move into. Feel sorry for young buyers nowadays.

Absolutely true, I've walked around and watched units being built and the builders chatting, on a go slow, or having lunch or smoko! I am always astounded when the places are being sold off the plans from a showroom! Buyer beware!! 😳

@@RobReacts1 Wow. That would be amazing. I love really old houses. Not so many in Aus compared to UK, but there are some really wonderful old homesteads, full verandah around the house and lovely old houses in the suburbs. In Adelaide where I'm from, there are alot more beautiful old houses and buildings. I loved my Grandma's house, built by my Grandpa and his father in the 1920s just before Grandparents got married. Still standing much as it was when I was there. Grandma told me when it was built there was just open paddocks all around it. Now a very old suburb called Prospect close to Adelaide city. Grandma told me that during the depression tramps (as they were called, meaning men "tramping around the country side looking for any sort of work, rabbit, roo hunting etc) used to come up to their house and sleep on their floor if they'd missed the last train, which was at the bottom of the hill. Sorry, rambling, but loved that house and Grandparents so much 😓

The old "Phoenix Company" scenario -- a company rises from the ashes of itself, happens all the time. It even happens in sport -- I remember that there was this local women's football team (Aussie rules) and they were clearly the dominant team in their division. They won the Grand Final but rather than go into the higher division and face actual tough competition, they disbanded, adopted a new name and played on in the lower grade. They were not very popular.

A couple of years ago I had storm damage to my roof, broken tiles and fallen gutters, I rang the Insurance company who told me to get a quote. So I rang a roofing company and the guy said if it is going through insurance the quote is $2,200, but if I paid cash (no invoice) he would do it for $800. I went with the cash option, because he would do it immediately and no delay, or it would be a 7 day wait for the insurance company to approve it.
@RobReacts1
@RobReacts1 Год назад
Haha probs because he knew he could charge what he liked and the insurance would pay for it!

In the electrical trade (sparkies) we have an electrical meter to test circuits for breakages etc called a meg ohm meter (megger). It’s similar to a standard volt/ohm meter but has a capacitor to put larger voltages down the circuit. You tell your raw newbie 1st year to hold the two probes and push the button. It gives a nice little shock and you tell him “never hold the probes”. (While in hysterics). My father told me during ww2 they would get the old phone winders that made the bell ring at the other end and connect them to the urinals. When someone uses it they wind like mad. Hehe

In my first year of my apprenticeship I was sent to the storeroom for a long weight. I waited for 15 minutes before the storeman came out and asked me if I'd waited long enough. Another apprentice was sent to get a left handed spanner and another was sent to get some elbow grease.

And there are two different land titles Strata and Torrens. Torrens title simply means the purchaser owns the land and building. This can also be known as 'freehold. ' Strata title simply means that there are multiple owners of properties on one piece of land where all owners are responsible for the areas that are shared known as 'common areas. So i am on strata

There was a bit in the news not long ago about a roof tiler, he pulled all the tiles off a roof he'd done and smashed them because the builder hadn't paid him for the job after a year. He had the legal right to do so too, because there is a clause in his contracts that states "Until payment is received in full, goods shall remain the property of (insert business name here)".
@RobReacts1
@RobReacts1 Год назад
Ah see over here, if someone doesn't pay, you can't knock it all down

The house was still under construction, I don't think he would have done that if it was finished and being lived in.
@andrewhall9175
@andrewhall9175 Год назад
Saw a tiler on tv last week so sick of the builders empty promises to pay, that he went up on the roof and threw the tiles to the ground smashing them. Contract says all materials are the tiler’s property until paid for in full. Now both parties are poorer for their efforts but geez that tiler must feel satisfied. Being a “provider of shelter” should be considered a noble career but here we are with with construction workers and estate agents alike trashing their own reputations
@Darksoull.
@Darksoull. Год назад
Trouble today is you either get a dodgy builder who can do it right now, or you get a good one who won't be able to do the job for another 6 months and costs 3 times the price. I've spent 2 months trying to find a tradie to remove and brick in two windows. They either want me to do all the work and even provide the bricks, and they just come in one day and put in the bricks, or they want , what I have calculated to be about 2-3 times what the job is worth.
