Rob Reacts to... The Mysterious Drop Bears of Melbourne 

I remember being in Germany a few years back, and this group of Swedes asked what is the deadliest animal from Australia. then my mischievous side emerged and I started to talk about the Dropbear, then by chance I had these Australians backing up the story, then I pointed them towards a scar on my hand, "This is from a dropbear attack, I was lucky to escape with my life" it was amusing how shocked they were, then we told them, that they mostly attack tourists.

Drop Bears were already a part of Aussie mythology well before the Bundy Rum advertisement. The advert merely ran with it and turned the Koala based Drop Bear into a Polar Bear as the Polar Bear is on the Bundy Rum label. Why was a Polar Bear on an Aussie rum label you may ask? The Bundaberg Distilling Company was founded in 1888 by a group of Scandinavian migrants to the new colony of Queensland and the Polar Bear was a reference to their homeland.

The drop bear was first 'discovered' somewhere in the 60's by Aussie Vietnam Veterans describing the dangerous Aussie jungle animals to American soldiers. According to my old man, he should know because he was there.

Hi Rob. Excellent mate. Actually Drop Bears have been around way longer than the Bundaberg Polar Bear. They took the original Drop Bear and turned it in to a Polar Bear. Great reaction 🙂

Americans in particular need to be reminded that their Grissly and Brown bears are cuddly, fun loving pets, compared with the terror of a DROP BEAR.

The drop bear has always been a carnivorous koala. There were a series of Bundy ads that featured the Bundy Bear hanging out with the lads in different scenarios, in one, he pretended to be a drop bear, that's the only connection as far as I know.

I used to a postie on a bike many years ago, and there was one maggie that used to swoop me when it was spring. I found this worked, I put my sunnies on top of my head facing backwards, they didn't swoop me, probably thought it was eyes.

Pretty certain the Bundy Bear and the Drop Bear have never been associated. They've always been to completely separate things.

I find the fun part is that every single Aussie knows the joke and will immediately back up anyone pulling it on foreigners. Even random Aussies on the street know to back it up. Hehe The other fun part is that foreigners will also back the joke.

I must say Magpies were great fun for me, other than the first time I was swooped at 8 yrs age, walking along a grassy paddock to a school friends home, and ended up running screaming as if being murdered. Well by the time I reached my friend's home, I was bleeding behind my left ear. However never again, next time one tried swooping, I had my cap pistol on, and turned and let off a few loud BANGS. I discovered that in fact merely turning and looking at the Magpie, it would abort dive bombing you. Of course make sure you turn to look, timing it at other than just as it is striking you, or your eye could be hit, so turn and look after the first swoop goes past. It is the looking at the Magpie that keeps it from attacking, thus the benefit of painted eyes on you Hat, Cao or Helmet, or sunglasses on the top even just in your hair. I spent years purposely getting them to try swooping me, and even grabbed hold a couple of times as they swooped past. But also got school detention, made to do litter cleaning as punishment for up to one hour at end of day classes. On two occasions even hadva police constable warn me not to do it. Apparently I was making the Magpies swoop others more often by their logic. The Magpies swoop in nesting season, and are trying to protect their nests and young chicks. Outside breeding times they do not swoop. Sadly as many swoop attacks are from trees near public places, bus stops, train stations, park lands all with many trees nearby, and extensive people traffic, walking, running, cycling, even going to parked cars to drive away, many attacks are heavy people traffic locations. To minimise public HAZARD, the animal control action was to destroy the nests with a shotgun blast. I and other RC model plane flyers, especially the slower glider flyers had considerable aerial warfare with Magpies and Hawks. These could do considerable damage, and worst case did hit the slide power switch on more than one glider or plane turning off power to the RC gear and causing plane crashes or even flyaway loss of plane and RC receiver & servos. I had a 12 ft span glider, that I actually twice caught a Magpie attacking by a sharp roll and loop manoeuvre and knocked the bird out of flight to fall to the ground. I got revenge those times by pure luck. They are hard to hit in flight, as they are manoeuvring better than my planes. I still treat the Magpie swooping as more fun than danger. Mostly they do not even strike you, just swoop past with load CLACK of the beak and possible wing feather wack on the head or shoulders. Yes I know my first time I got hit many times, to be bleeding behind my ear.

Hey Rob, The Bundaberg adverts were a take off from the original drop bears (Koalas) because their company logo is the Polar Bear, not Bundaberg first.

They are about 6ft tall and have a thick furry coat, slerded growl a bottle of wine in a paper bag and smell realy bad ...they sleep on the park bench..

He did an excellent job on April Fools day morning here which if some American on interent is watching on their last day of March still could have got through some without the penny dropping. If Glenn Robbins tried this video as Russel Coight I think he would have struggled to do the video and keep a straight face. Would have needed a lot more takes. For every American that aware this is a pisstake there still plenty more that so unaware beyond their own nation that still fall for this stuff decades later. I think it safe to say there still a few more decades of this to run for Aussies before most Americans are awake to it.

Never heard so much rubbish in all my life. However, It has long be known that 'Con-tours' are far more dangerous than dropbears. Contours can be found typically running 'around' hills laterally in most locations, and are frequently found in extremely hilly areas where sharp cliffs may also be found. Often hidden by the local flora and geographical features, they egregiously attack tourists who may not realise or be aware that they are in areas of precipitous geographical features - where contours typically like to frequent. Con-tours have no particular preference for race, colour or creed of human kind attacking indiscriminately without care for the local environment or surrounding vegetation. Far more tourists to Australia are attacked by con-tours than by any other animal on the continent. Little is known of contour behaviour and feeding/breeding habits, except that contours thrive in the wild. They can often be seen in the distance near fantastic geographical features such as mountains ranges and cliff walls, scubas the Grampians in Victoria, and the Blue Mountains in NSW. Photographic evidence has shown them to be varying in size and nature, but show varying distinguishing features that can make identification difficult. No known sound is thought to identify contours, either as they approach or in their near vicinity, although it has been reported that near or around contours an 'Echo" may be heard. This may be an artefact of the local area or geography. There have been few studies done to resolve this report. What can not be disputed are the numbers deaths as a result of contours in Australia - 21 in every 100K. Local Govt.s have implemented numerous campaigns to help public awareness using signs and guard rails to help toasts identify the areas where contours can hide from unwitting and unknowledgeable people not familiar with the areas that they find themselves in. Studies have fail to highlight the effectiveness of such signs and steps to stop the dangers posed by contours at large. Only with greater vigilance can the mounting death toll be reduced. Please beware of local features around nature walks and rocky terrain.
