Robbed at Gunpoint in Johannesburg, South Africa

I never thought I would wake up in bed to a gun at my face. I thought that sh*t only happens in the movies.
I wrote more extensively about my experience in this blog post:
www.passporthea...
I travel the world to highlight the beauty in places that might not often be shown. I really want to show the world how beautiful Africa is as a continent. It is the blood that runs through my veins. Before I go any deeper, I just want say that Jo’burg is not all of Africa.
I got love for South Africa and I met so many dope people. It’s unfortunate because I never intended to release negative media on any destination, let alone, a place in Africa. I’ve felt compelled to do so because first of all, I create content as if I am making it for my friends and I want people to have a good time and be safe doing so.
I am glad that in a situation like this, I am not sponsored and I don’t have to make some canned ass response or not even talk about it. I would feel bad about putting people who follow me in danger without knowing all the details.
There is so much beauty in this place but this devil is alive here as well.
Sorry for all the doom and gloom in this post but this was my reality for Jo’burg and it’s worth sharing my very real experience of it so that others can be aware and take even more precautions if they choose to travel that way.

If you have questions about robbery you ask on my IG I will answer what I can.
If I can't get all responses you can email at info@passportheavy.com.

I'm South African and visit South Africa and particularly Johannesburg regularly, those criminals were tipped about you guys and probably followed you for hours till you went home. It's shameful to say that my home country is dangerous, no one is safe, local or tourist, it doesn't matter. If you have something flashy, you'll be targeted.

I love you brother Jubril and your amazing team please continue with your great sense of humour and kindness..also the way you put up your presentation is so professional at the same time cool. You're a smart guy so sorry that you have to go through this. As time progresses, you'll start going antrolopological and will draw interest in shooting films about ancient ruins of a pre-colonial Africa from Timbktu west Africa to Egypt north Africa, the great Zimbabwe southern Africa to Kilwa city ruins Tanzania in East Africa. Man, I'm sorry that happened bro. I'm glad all of you are okay. I've been to Jo-Burg a few times and almost moved there. From my experience, the country is a beautiful place, and most people are amazing, the food is great, the culture great. But every single person I met knows of at least one close friend or family member that has gotten robbed there by gunpoint, kidnapped, or worse, sooner or later. Not friend of friend, or heard in the grapevine, but straight up know someone personally who's been through it. The problem is the government doesn't do enough to stop it from happening again and again, and again. It's a shame. I'm glad you guys are safe.

As difficult and traumatic as that was to share I really appreciate your bravery to tell the story. Your lives are far more valuable than some content and materialistic items. As disturbing as it was to hear the savaregy and near-death experiences, lowkey your impersonations had me dying and I would love to hear how you guys caught up with the thieves! PLease be careful though they could have been HEAVILY armed and outnumbered you. By the way, this video made me shorten my trip to Joburg, so it was helpful to hear as well! Well, Jody can speak for himself, I'm sure, but to me, "real South Africans" are people who recognise and realise their true humanity in the way that they treat their fellow human beings - after all - South Africa is the birthplace of the concept of "Ubuntu". Or rather, let me say, that the word "ubuntu" came out of South Africa, but the concept is Africa-wide, and, I suspect, maybe even worldwide. Only through how we interact with other humans can we become truly human...

CRAZY story!! I was just in Jo-burg a month ago and went to an art gallery that ended up being in the hood. Uber drive was shook, saying he hates driving to this area! After I was done I tried to uber it out of there any NO uber would pick me up for 45 minutes. It took 4 tried before an uber black finally came and got me lol. Back at my hotel, the receptionist told be because of carjacking some urbers are nervous to pick people up in the inner city areas.

It's not car hacking that's the issue. Uber drivers are often attacked by taxi drivers because they think they're taking work away from them.

Gerard George Not necessarily, sounds like the group including the home owner, who should have known better; were not watching their backs. I’m guessing what drew the robbers were the big entourage with foreign accents, lack of awareness of surroundings, flashy lifestyle, dogs not in main house; and a possible unlocked door contributed to this happening. Three guys with a gun means they planned this robbery, maybe even cased the place and struck when they knew no one was watching. I’m not saying this to be mean, just something that tends to happen when people are traveling in groups, there is sometimes a false sense of security and no one is watching out.

Yes true in that respect to stay in hotels. Before my trip to Jozi early this year though, I did my homework and rented a house in Houghton that had top notch security (and cheaper than the hotels). I queiried everything...EVERYTHING. And felt safe the whole time I was there. Never wore jewellery or carried a handbag...Trick I used and thankfully for my thick hair lol..I hid my credit card in my bun.

This happens everywhere. When I was living in Lima I’d heard of armed robberies happening nearby, a restaurant, a bank, a house a block away. One year of living in Peru I was robbed at gun point in a taxi. He then drops us off somewhere sketchy. I stick out like a sore thumb and people harass me on the way of trying to find police. I find “security” people who don’t have phones or internet. Eventually I find the police to have someone pick me up and he tells me to hurry because he doesn’t have much data left and that the robber is probably at the club now with my money. It’s when something happens, you realize what it is really like living in a developing country.

Cape town and Durban is okay. Also has it's bad areas, but much safer than Johannesburg. You should also try smaller cities like Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit and East London... Port Elizabeth is a coastal city that sits halfway between Cape town and Durban. Nelspruit is close to the Kruger National Park, and East London is a very laid back small coastal city. There are so many other smaller cities and towns that are overlooked by tourists, because they are overshadowed by those 3 big cities.
