Peter Gabriel ❤ Because Robbie Robertson album was produced by Daniel Lanois, cameos from Peter Gabriel and U2 were natural.

You also had the BoDeans singing some background vocals on the album, though not this track.

Robbie background was very interesting his mother was Mohawk Cayuga from 6 nations outside of Toronto. Robbie grew up in Toronto but would often visit the reservation with his mother, where he observed the elders telling stories and many played an instrument. Robbie grew up with an abusive stepfather, who would beat Robbie and his mother, when Robbie was about 13 his mother had enough of the abuse, and left him, that is when she told Robbie his real father was Jewish, and he was killed before Robbie was born.

That entire album is FIRE and includes collaborations with U2, Peter Gabriel, and the BoDeans, among others. One of my favorite albums from decades ago. I knew Robbie was a great songwriter from his time in The Band, but when this came out I found out just how deep his talent ran. RIP

Robbie wrote this song in tribute to his late bandmate, Richard Manuel, from The Band.

Richard committed suicide in 1986 at 43 years old. Fallen Angel and Showdown at big Sky, is 2 songs Robbie wrote and performed after he left The Band. Rag Mama Rad, Up on Cripple Creek many others were song he wrote while in The Band, all are good but different. The Band had 3 great singers, Richard, who this song is about, and Levon and my favorite Rick Danko.

RIP Robbie. I hope he had a good reason for taking credit away from his bandmates, because I want to like him and his legacy with the Band.

Rest easy, read Barney Hopkyns biography of The Band, they all made a lot of money, some got wasted on drugs and bad management. Robbie wrote the songs, he also became almost like the caretaker of 3 of the band members, when they got into heroin. Some agreed to Robbie buying them out, they wanted the money. Since Robbie wrote most of the songs he made more money, but they others cashed in as well. Robbie actually made most of his fortune from doing movie scores for several Scorsese's movies.

@@hannejeppesen1809 It can be easy to get caught up in the hype and the rumors. It's true Robbie held them together and wrote most of the music. Did Levon have a right to be mad? I don't know. I'll try and read that book. I still need to read the biography of the 60's 'The Castaways' that I ordered. 'Liar Liar' is a great, rockin' tune! It's also the title of the book.
