For fifty years, Robert Adams has made compelling, provocative, and highly influential photographs that show us the wonder and fragility of the American landscape, its inherent beauty, and the inadequacy of our response to it. "American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams" examines Adams’s reverential act of looking at the world around him and the almost palpable silence of his photographs.
For the May Aperture PhotoBook Club gathering, Aperture executive director Sarah Meister joined Robert Adams and Sarah Greenough, senior curator and head of the Department of Photographs at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC to discuss Adams’s most important projects featured in "American Silence."

Robert Adams has contributed so much to photography through his photography, writing and the way he lives as an artist. Remarkable man and conversation. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for doing this. Really good. So appreciate it. By the way, that is a beautiful living room, the color of that sofa and everything.

There is much irony in what Adams is saying in this interview about the current paucity of relevant (at any level) photography, about "what now passes as art", as APERTURE is (has evolved into, from heroically poetic beginnings) one of the most guilty vehicles for commercial, trite photography. This is sadly clear in this interview with Aperture's Executive Director's dismissive response after Adams speaks of his work in his usually poignant words. After one of his most reflective moments regarding the role of the artist, she laughs out loud and almost sneers with her "we'll leave that aside". Adams speaks of poetry. She can speak only in artspeak, and I sense her unease knowing that Adams's criticism is partly aimed at what he might call the Artistic Silence of APERTURE.
