On March 16, 2005, after a three-month-long criminal trial in Los Angeles Superior Court, a jury acquits Robert Blake, star of the 1970s television detective show Baretta, of the murder of his 44-year-old wife, Bonny Lee Bakley.
Blake, who was born Mickey Gubitosi in 1933 in New Jersey, made his movie debut at the age of six, in MGM’s 1939 movie Bridal Suite; the studio soon featured him in its Our Gang series of short films. After changing his name to Robert Blake, he starred in the 1960 gangster movie The Purple Gang and numerous other films. In 1967, Blake memorably portrayed Perry Smith, one of two real-life murderers at the center of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, when the book was adapted for the big screen. As an actor, Blake was best known for his Emmy-winning work as the street-smart plainclothes policeman Tony Baretta in the ABC series Baretta. The show ran from 1975 to 1978, and Blake won an Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series at the end of its first season.
During his criminal trial, Blake’s defense team portrayed the aging actor as a rather pathetic figure and argued that Bakley had a pattern of sending letters and nude photos of herself to famous men and had trapped Blake into marrying her by becoming pregnant. The couple’s daughter, Rose, was born in June 2000, and though Bakley initially claimed that the child was fathered by Christian Brando, son of the celebrated actor Marlon Brando, a paternity test proved the baby was Blake’s. Blake and Bakley married that November. Their brief, unhappy union lasted until May 4, 2001, when Bakley was shot to death as she sat in a car outside a Los Angeles restaurant.
Blake was arrested for the murder, and the prosecution produced two former stunt doubles who claimed the actor had recruited them to kill his wife. During cross-examination, the stuntmen were revealed to be cocaine and methamphetamine users. In their acquittal of Blake, the jury made it clear they didn’t believe the stuntmen’s statements, and also concluded that the prosecution had failed to place the murder weapon in Blake’s hands.
In November 2005, eight months after the criminal trial ended, Robert Blake was found liable in a civil trial of “intentionally” causing Bonny Lee Bakley’s death; he was ordered to pay $30 million to Bakley’s children. Rose remained in the care of Blake’s eldest daughter, Delinah. Though he did not testify in the criminal trial, Blake did take the stand during his civil trial to deny the accusations.

Bonny Lee Bakley’s gravesite looks like no one has visited in years. I appreciate that you focused on her losing her life, not her past. Regardless of her past, she did not deserve to be murdered. This case has always intrigued me. I listened to a podcast recently about her murder called The Execution of Bonny Lee Bakley. Both she & Robert Blake were abused as children. As always, thank you for showing compassion when covering true crime. Take care.

" What?!!" I always thought Blake had a strange alibi too Scott. I remember seeing him on interviews years before he met Bonnie and the guy def had anger issues. Her death is like a mob hit, one minute she's had a meal in an Italian restaurant and the next she's shot in the head. She might have been a star f'nn gold digger but she didn't deserve what happened to her and neither did her kids. Thanks for finally covering this case. RIP Bonnie💖🌄💐

Bonnie made her income scamming money from men. Mostly older gentlemen , she would get engaged to these men and have them give her a lot of money. It wasn't being an actress because she never had the talent. Some men had families that would try to get the money back. Any one of the men or families could be motivated. When she married Blake it was understood that there was no love involved because he felt he was scammed into the marriage. Bonnie swore she was on birth control and obviously that was a lie. She was sleeping with I can't remember his name and who wants to get married under those circumstances. She lived in a smaller house that Blake owned behind Blake's house and Blake paid all of her bills. Blake was smart enough to plan her death if he was going to and this was not planned by him. So, pick a name from her past and it could be that man. I think her past caught up with her. Just my opinion.

This is a video about her being murdered and your opinion of someone you never knew is meaningless. You show a lack of empathy and an arrogance. You know nothing because you didn't know the woman or know what she was thinking.

Who leaves their gun at a restaurant?? He clearly knew more then he was letting on. I remember following this story, the media painted a ugly picture of her as if to imply that she got what she deserved, and made him to be the victim of her craftiness. In the TV show Beretta, Robert Blake played a plain clothed police officer/undercover cop, kind of like Starsky and Hutch. It lasted for 4 seasons from 75-78. His catch phrase was "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time"... Interesting.

Man, what a jacked-up story. I remember this when it happened. All over the news. Then the case dragged on and on and on. Blake also played Perry Smith, one of the killers in the 1967 movie 'In Cold Blood', a story by Truman Capote. Perry Smith later received the death penalty by hanging. The 'gun' alibi worked for Blake as he had received numerous threats against his life previously and was licensed to carry for personal protection. Bonnie's death appears to be more like a mob hit, and that may or may not exonerate Blake, yet I will agree the misplaced firearm is more a pre-scripted statement to distract the jurors at the trial back-in-the-day.

Sounds like it was a hired hit. Asking for 2 glasses of water is odd behavior when going back to a restaurant to retrieve something, while your wife sits in a car waiting on a dark street. If I had left a gun in a restaurant (lol!), I think I would want to get it and get out of there quickly. Perhaps Blake was trying to give the killer as much time as possible? Not accusing, just speculating.

She bears a striking resemblance to a woman who was murdered in a very similar manner and the murder was never solved. Another lady with a shady past, rather well-known..the most likely murderers..all these years after the deaths of all involved, were the corrupt top cops..because she knew too much. She didn’t deserve to die either and left young children behind. Maybe Blake *had* been trying to protect her, maybe she had good reason to fear stalkers..there’s some real shady sh*t goes on in Hollywood.
