You might have noticed that I was using some tiny inexpensive Sony speakers to do the initial test runs on my DIY projects. I have gotten tired of hearing how tinny they sound and how little they reveal, so I thought I would find a nice DIY speaker project to replace them. The speakers might also work as surround speakers with a vintage Adcom amplifier I have.
I have seen the Hi-Vi DIY3.1A three-way speakers covered by Z Reviews and other RU-vid hobbyists. I was intrigued by how closely they resemble the sexy new Wharfedale EVO 4.2. I was also impressed at how affordable they were while still maintaining high quality.
I have built them and I am very impressed with their value. Everything to build two speakers for $299. With the DIY Perfectionist Crossover Mod they sound very clean and neutral. I don't know how they compare to budget classics from Elac or Emotiva, but they are a DIY bargain.

Good video sir, I just spent 2 hours listening to my IXYS F5 amp, 28watts is so much power in my room! Next to build, Balanced BOZ pre-amp.

I saw your video, great job! The BOZ pre sounds like a great project. You might also like the Pass B1 buffer preamp with the Korg NuTube in it. It is really a best of both worlds hybrid preamp.

Nice build. I just purchased the kit for my birthday. Two years ago I built the smaller 2.1 and have been happy with them. Frank Hale ( one time owner of Swan (Hivi)) did some videos on putting these kits together. I will probably upgrade the crossovers as well.

I have struggled for quite some time trying to get the HIVI Swans to sound better. I have done the crossover mods, but I am now considering changing the woofer.

@purplerider2362 I spent about 20 more dollars, at Parts Express, and did the perfect crossover. Look it up online. I actually like them now. I also recommend using terminal clips instead of soldering to the speakers. You do have to solder the board. Once you have it perfected, go ahead and solder the speaker terminals.

I built these last year. Paid $299. Unbelievable deal and a ton of fun to build. Directions were even good.

I have a big box of the 3.1s sitting in my living room. Need to order the Sehlin mod parts and decide how to finish them. Yours look nice. Need to decide if it is worth upgrading the caps on the mid and tweeter when ordering the Sehlin parts. Thanks for sharing!

The way to get the most of these speakers, and make them excellent would be to Tri-amp each speaker, or at least Bi-Amp each speakers reducing need for crossovers.

Great thanks I just finish mine with the upgrade crossover. For 299.00 30 for crossover parts. These are much better in my opinion sound better then my 1,000 SVS. And my ELAC. Thanks for video now I know I did them correct . I would buy more if they had them HIVI for some reason went down the tubes.

ok love your video. I have a pair of these that I bought used but in new condition but came with no crossover at all would you or now someone that can build a new upgrade cross over for me .,

Dan, Here is the link to the Sehlin Crossover Upgrade. sites.google.com/view/sehlin-sound-solutions/hivi-diy-3-1-modifications. I used the Stage 4 -Perfectionist Modification. You may have an advantage if you build the crossover on your own board. The Inductors on the stock board are placed too close to each other.
