Plenty of subtext in this hilarious movie.. I think it's less a critic of back in the day blackface, more of today's holier than thou actors who talk the talk for the 'lower classes' or 'minorities' but are taking all the action from them at the same time
Robert Downey Jr, he wasn't playing blackface, he was playing a white man did a plastic surgery to become black and try to act like black man, this was explained in the beginning of the movie.
It wasn't even JUST about white people playing black/asian characters when they could have cast an actor of that ethnicity, it was also about just how hard method actors go sometimes. But it really annoys me when people use the word Blackface to describe that. Blackface is a very specific vaudeville tradition that is a ridiculous over the top caricature of a black person with a character that is a deliberately offensive racist portrayal of a black person. That is NOT the same as some dude from a record company dressing as someone he admires for a fancy dress party.
@@EfftupSmith I agree with you about casting an actor to play some ethnic character is way better if he is from the same ethnicity, no doubt about it, but it's not the same case for tropical thunder movie, the role wasn't about a black character, the role was about a white character trying to be a black character and fail to be black at the end of the movie, and this is the funny thing, especially when he said his famous funniest quote: "I am dude playing a dude disguised as another dude!", and his colleague replayed to him "you are a dude who has no idea what dude he is, and he claims to know what dude he is!" lol ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Eu0Vucn7xww.html
Technically he did, but there's nothing wrong with it. Because he's playing a character who did it, but via surgery. That's how they got around it. And it was showing how dumb it would be. But the character the character played was so great. And he did a brave great job.
I as an autistic person personally thought the way they handled the whole Simple Jack aspect and even that conversation how Kurk used the R word was pretty spot on. Also I would say the same with the Blackface thing as well. It’s just very unfortunate this modern climate has become incredibly sensitive and will get offended over literally anything 😩😩😩 Even with the point movies like this are making.
While I agree with most of your ideas, at 7:18 your analysis isn't correct. The reason for the full-Re-word monologue is because there is a conflict between Stiller and Downey Jr, regarding who is the leader of their little pack. They are both the oldest. Downey started out in a leadership role, but when Stiller started acting with his machine gun, stupidly firing at the drug-runners and throwing the fake-grenade, he got everyone else by Robert Downey on his side. Now Robert Downey is trying to gradually work down his self-esteem, by subtly calling him stupid.
Personally I've only seen two black people that had an issue with RDJ's character in tropic thunder. Tbh, some of the biggest fans of that movies I've ever seen are black.
You called this one man. Yeah, the guy behind him is calling him out, over and over, just like he should. Robert Downey Jr did a great job of pointing a finger at the world, and our selves, at himself. He did a great job... The R word is a bit taboo these days and I get it but hell, even George Carlin didn't think it was bad back in the day. It had better terminology back then when they called it mental retardation, which back then seemed less harsh... Anyway, yeah I love this movie and looking forward to buying the longer updated version of it...
Even bkacknpeoolecdid “blackface” in the sense that it was a theater style in the early part of the last century. RDJ was not blackface! I’d say that Dan Akroyd was closer to blackface in Trading Places.
There was going to be another movie directed by Jamie Foxx called "ALL STAR WEEKEND." It got shelved because the woke mob got wind of it. Jamie was going to play a racist white cop & Robert Jr was going to play a mexican. Robert portraying mexican was not funny but Jamie as a white cop was ok. When did comedy die??
