I was playing a gig in Danville VA last Dec and this little kid about 8 years old comes up to me and asks me to play the "Robert Earl Keen Christmas Song". He sang the entire thing with me, it was great. Glad to know the youngin's like me are raised on the classics.
This is my favorite Christmas song. I listen to it every year. So many elements of it, remind me of my childhood. In a good way. Thank you Robert Earl Keen, for this gem.
"White Christmas" be damned.....this is pretty close as to how most of our "real" Christmases at home are. Priceless...timeless.......never gets old. You gotta believe Jesus has a belly-laugh at just how true these images are on His blessed birthday and the absurdity of how we celebrate it.
I’m 30, I swear this is my entire family’s (30 people deep) family Christmas song, we would sing it when we were kids, we change the lyrics a little to fit our own family, this is the perfect Christmas song and I have some good family memories I cherish with this tune
This song just brought so many memories of Christmas parties past. And yes my parents did the motorhome part in New York when we visited my dads family. That part always makes me grin. Merry Christmas everyone.
The genius of this song is the restraint. It would be easy/expected to write a song with extreme over the top characters. REK essentially wrote characters we all have in our family and the copious consumption of alcohol at Christmas. This is the counterpoint to all the traditional holiday classic that just idyllic and little else. This song resonates and all sounds very familiar because this is how most people's christmas parties go.
My favorite Christmas song! It reminds me of my dad's side of the family. They've mostly past away now but this song reminds me of family get togethers gone by.
I am a product of this situation. Hillbillies from Utah met my mom's new boyfriend like this and I was born. The rest was history. Merry Christmas to all from 2022
I once called them to request it, and they said they would try. I hung up and said what do they mean they will try?? They are in charge!! It was the next song.
@Angel Bulldog That's awesome that we just happened to interact here on You Tube! I have been living in Winston-Salem for the past few months, but I go back to Pleasant Garden occasionally now. Have a good Thanksgiving!
I was listening to this in the car tonight Brilliant and I was singing along to this most excellent Christmas Song Robert’s hair and beard are the colour of mine ✅
I can't even begin to tell you all how much fun it was going to The Robert Earl Show in the 90's. Saw at least 10 shows and every single one was a blast! REK has always delivered for his fans!
I’m not much of a Christmas music guy, but I do love listening to this song. Just reminds ya that everyone’s family is messed up and that’s what makes family get togethers interesting.
Hear ya. I’ve seen it all at family get togethers. I love the tense silence sometimes. Nobody says anything because the first thing anyone says will be the wrong thing. I’ve seen it get to the point where every one is small talking and looking really tense and finally someone will ask someone else why are you being so quiet today. Uh oh
I got relatives in Defiance, Ohio and Ft. Wayne, Indiana that this reminds me of. Also, used to have a Stop & Go up the street (it's a Circle K now) with a guy named Chet who used to call every kid "George," would bounce your change on the counter and catch it before he'd hand it to you . . . and would sell me Marlboro's when I was 9.
This song is such a great summary of what happens in most families and is playable at any time throughout the year. It's relatable to me here in North Carolina.
Saw REK and his band on 12/6/17 at the Town Theater in NYC. One of the best shows I have ever seen. We had a fantastic time and can't wait until he is back in the area. Thanks for a great show!
@@michaelclark9762 i love me some hayes carll as well as townes van zandt. All great songwriters that tell stories not just toss out words. Really hard to say if one is any better than the other. Guess it comes down to personal preference.
"I can't remember how I'm kinned to them" is an often used statement around my parts. I know people in town and from church who I know I'm kinned to but can't remember how
