6:00 "the fool is he who thinks he is wise, while the wise one knows he is a fool". ancient philosophers got it right with that and had to deal with the same stuff we have to... maybe learning from them (including the manipulators) would be wise... just saying they got lessons to teach if we are willing to learn. A person who have a hard time trusting people, has many reasons why not to trust someone. For all these years of being overly nice to people, I always get manipulated and used. Then I realized that my intense love and care for people attracts toxic people. It hurts me a lot but I'm grateful for this lesson. It thought me to change, be more wise, and have balance. Now my life is getting better. I'm no longer being used as punching bag except if I allow it. I have more control with my life, situations, and emotions. I no longer care what others think and I've learned to put my own needs first before others. Because you can not give what you do not have. I'm very grateful to God for freeing me from the suffering.

Something that became very clear to me when i went camping alone was that without the existence of other people it's impossible to even know who you are at all. Everything you know about yourself is in relation to others. Any traits or opinions you have can only be known to you by the existence of something else to compare them to. For example you can only know you are funny if you make other people laugh and also if other people are unfunny by comparison. You can only know you are strong if others are weaker. You can only know you are tall of other people are shorter. Even the language you speak and the name you go by are given to you. If you spend no time alone to know who you are as separate from everyone else I can see how this would be the case, but I can tell the difference between me and other people and the opinions and ideas that are passed down to us. Where I want to stand up in my own beliefs even if they’re different and where I don’t want to challenge ideas because it’s stubbornness making me want to challenge them in the first place or there’s truly a better way to do it, if you’ll be listened to or followed in creating those changes for more than just your own life in the first place. Like he says, it’s all relative and we can’t come to a perfect truth, but we can be aware of our own strengths and weaknesses and know where we can stand independently or need to join arms with others to balance those qualities out, learn to balance them better and be contributing to our families, communities and society as a whole more effectively without feeling like you have no identity or control in any of it anyway. We absolutely have free will and there is always a way to know yourself more deeply than in comparison to everything and everyone else. We can feel complete and whole and be genuinely present with the awareness of whether we should engage in comparison or stand apart. I don’t agree that we never can really know if we’re being manipulated as Robert is saying because it’s a tangible feeling that our nervous system picks up on but if we don’t know how to listen to what our body is telling us or someone else’s is, that’s when we fall into the trap of trusting someone who’s just being manipulative versus supportive and holding you accountable to your best.
@TheGiantMidget

@@tiffinysanchez2312 yes but what you have to remember is even in the absence of other people in your company your traits still exist in pairs of opposites. So even if you are a hermit you have to have had a frame of reference at some point in your life to know what those traits are

We all being manipulated, you just need to see and understand who actually has your best interest at heart. Manipulation happens naturally and also happens intentionally it's human nature to crave influence and have control but be careful when you posses it and when you consume it.

How to resist manipulation: a quick guide: How would a Psychopath feel about this situation? Nothing, exactly. So don't worry about anyone else, what they think or feel. Focus on you, yourself and remain objective, detached and critical of everything else. It's like a game. Figure out how to win.

Yeah that’s straight up some terrible advice right there. Let’s copy the emotions response of psychopaths. You can’t even if you wanted to (it’s hardwired).Focusing on the self leads to mental health problems. Focusing on helping others improves mental health.
@baileys6346
@baileys6346 Год назад
This is silly. Psychopaths for the most part are just people who have high deficits in emotional intelligence. It’s not that they’re emotionless, it’s that they have poor impulse control, no consideration for morality, and are basically emotionally impaired/disabled. They have very little capacity for interrupting their poor behavioral patterns. We fall privy to bullshitting and manipulation through what we find salient to us. We don’t lie to ourselves, we distract ourselves. To avoid manipulation, an individual needs to be able to self-reflect on their distractions and salience landscape.
@77Tadams

@@sof553 I don’t think being detached is a bad thing. I don’t emotionally attach to many people. I don’t have expectation of them. I also don’t require “hanging out”. I am friendly to people, but I have really strict boundaries to keep them at a distance. I enjoy the company of few. I am kind, but I don’t fall for people guilt tripping me with “shoulding” on me. I am done caring what people think I should do for them. I don’t subscribe anymore to that tactic of manipulative people. I use to be surrounded by them. Now, I mainly deal with people transactionally mainly. I keep it simple. Intimacy is reserved for a very select few.

His ability to articulate the insights on the qualities in humility and on self-reflection and what they have to offer towards a full understanding about the role external influences play in directing our actions is so refreshing… I am also encouraged by how many gravitate his way. I got a wise friend who suggested I read his book 48, even though we no longer hang out, and tbh I skimmed it, but the spirit of the ideas have a thorough respect.

We have to except that everyone is being manipulated and there's nothing wrong about it ,but the difference is we do have a choice ,so you can choose what you want to be manipulated by which makes the difference between alot of people .and that single choice is what makes you an individual.

I find it insane when people justify highly unreasonable behavior with "we are social animals". The guy getting sacrificed on top of a pyramid by his peers was also a social animal. Doesn't mean you shouldn't look at your surroundings and make informed decisions about how you want to interact with the people in your society (or not).

Why would anyone want to be a part of society when all people do is look at their phones and their Facebook pages while they’re hanging out with you and no one really wants to have an intelligent conversation. Forget them being there for you when you’re going through stuff because they’re so busy they can’t even bother to talk with you for more than 5 minutes.

I feel blessed that I have never cared what others think about me or if they like me. I am not saying I am anti-social or I don't care about people, as a matter of fact I am a very good friend and look forward to helping anyone I can if I am able to, friend or stranger. But I would never allow my happiness to be contingent on others perception of me. I also love spending time with my wife and family but also love my time in solitude.

The only reason I'm trying to make friends at college is because my mother orders me to do so and I have to listen to her or else she will scream at me and call me names and say "why aren't you making friends, you don't want to be alone for the rest of your life or else you'll be unhappy and no guy will marry you if you have zero friends." I made a friend recently but she used me and I didn't even know it.. I am good at connecting with people and I leave off a good impression when I first encounter someone, however, once I start becoming their friend (ex. In College) they show their true colours and ghost me or talk behind my back idk why. I'm such a sweet kind soul who's genuine and love hearing people talk but it's like every girl hates me or is jealous of me. I feel self conscious when I wear feminine outfits because they make me look pretty so now I wear tomboyish outfits and try to appear masculine and no one even look my way because I look intimidating which I kinda like. No one talks to me or gives me nasty looks anymore. I don't want to go out there and make friends with other girls. I just wanna read my books and sip my coffee in a Cafe.
