What it says in the title.
See Merrill and James McCracken in the "Sì, pel ciel" duet here:
• Robert Merrill & James...
.....................................
This channel is primarily about vocal emission-aural examples of basically correct singing, correct impostazione-chiaroscuro, vowel clarity, firm and centered pitch, correct vibrato action, absence of throatiness or thickness, sounds free from constriction and from the acoustic noise that accompanies it-with occasional video examples that demonstrate what the body, face, mouth, jaw, and tongue look like when used with correct impostazione-the vocal emission of the one and only Italian school.
Caveat: I'm biased in favor of baritones and baritone literature, but if you want to learn about and listen to all the greatest singers in the old-school tradition, explore this spreadsheet (voice parts are separated by tabs): bit.ly/2W4qmE3

Merrill had one of the all-time great baritone voices, and his interpretation of Iago's Credo is outstanding.

Excellent interpretation. Iago's mockery of Life comes through clearly as does his enjoyment of human folly

Bastianini and Merrill. It is difficult for me too select which one is my favorite singing this aria. Both are so wonderful.

What is more sad and pathetic is that Bastianini was scheduled to record the role on Karajan’s stereo recording and that either Merrill or Cornell MacNeil should have made the recording with McCracken and Barbirolli. Instead in the former we have bland boring Protti and in the latter the choppy poor voiced Fischer-Dieskau. Terrible, terrible when such potential was ignored.

Fascinating! I have to admit my experience with opera is not extensive, but most of the other interpretations of Iago I have seen displayed in this aria are of a tortured, nihilistic soul experiencing an existential crisis, and when they ask "e poi?", they are almost pleading one more time for God to appear and reassure them that there is good in the world. Merril's interpretation is unlike any other I've seen (again, limited experience), where he is not only convinced, but completely untroubled, by the godlessness of the world and the folly of human decency. He is dramatic but almost comic, and his interpretation is almost more frightening than the more tortured Iagos, because he is willing to exploit others for his own means, and has no moral lines left to cross as he simply sees no need for them. Plus, what a robust voice and tone!

...very insightful analysis of what I agree is a brilliant interpretation of the "credo" of this most disturbingly evil of villains...

I'm so glad I got to see this. Merrill's Iago is sheer delight! He now joins my other favorites, Milnes, Diaz and Lieferkus. Bravo!

Milnes is my favorite. I don't like Leiferkus's voice, but he was a great Iago. Merrill is surprisingly dramatic in the role here.

Did you hear Bruson’s Iago?

I have, several times actually. He does a fine job. Thanks to my love for Domingo, his work introduced me to Bruson first as Miller and I was hooked. A great Alfio too.

Heard Merrill at the Met many times ( not as Iago ). Superb voice. Not the greatest actor but not bad either.

Ma la sceneggiatura qui ha pensato di girare una scena cupa, sinistra del 1300 in un salotto stile Spa?? Ridicolo! Neanche il grande Merril qui mi piace poco convincente sembra che canta una romanza...

Yes, they could have just turned down the lighting as he sings until he’s all alone with himself - -“e poi… nulla”

He has a beautiful voice. But I always get the feeling that he doesn't know the meaning of what he is singing. It's all about making a beautiful sound.
