The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Fantastic! Robert's first appearance on the Sullivan show! This is such rare footage! Please upload all of Jan Peerce's performances as well, singing both popular songs and opera.

Love the rarely seen late 1940s/early 1950s clips, particularly because Sullivan retrospectives always run the SAME well-trod clips

I saw him as Figaro on stage with the Met on tour in Cleveland ( in gentler times). The back and forth comedic banter with Fernando Corena, and Giorgio Tozzi may have been just a bit over the top, but the voices were the genuine article.

I watched this entire thing with a smile on my face a mile wide! One of the best Barber of Sevilles I’ve heard on RU-vid! And he makes great use of the live studio TV camera.

What an amazing performance, aside some histrionics catering to the audience. Bonelli must've been an amazing teacher, as Merrill managed to surpass him.
@cecilyerker
@cecilyerker 3 года назад
The “histrionics” are just the character of Figaro imitating the people who are always asking him for favors. Pretty par for the course in any standard Largo al Factotum.

@@cecilyerker I know it. I was listening to other performances by Merrill, and now i see it wasn't exclusive to this one in particular. Some of the accents he employed are not of my taste.
