The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The Ed Sullivan show was must see TV for black Americans who had televisions in the 1950s whenever black performers appeared. Because so few of us appeared on television then.

About 40 years after this performance, we saw Mr. Warfield do a dramatic reading of Carl Sandburg's "Lincoln". That was moving enough, but he also sang "Old Man River" as an encore. I can remember feeling the theater vibrate as he hit the really low notes. What an artist!

Yes 70's Girl...the Voice is not so deep as J.D. Sumners (=Elvis Bass Singer from 1972-1977) but William Warfields voice is beautifully imo😉

Great performance! From the same year as the 1951 big budget movie remake of "Show Boat" which also featured William Warfield singing this song. The movie was released in September 1951 so this would have been a bit of a preview for Sullivan audiences. Ed often promoted big movie releases on his show. Music by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. Please post more 1950's footage from the Sullivan show as those shows contain some of the rarest performances unseen since the original broadcasts.

Beautiful singing by Mr. Warfield. This song seems to need to be sung by a man with a baritone/bass voice. I can't imagine someone like Frankie Valli giving this song a try.
