After working his way up in a series of Hopalong Cassidy B westerns, the perennially underrated actor Robert Mitchum seemed to have become an instant star. Who noticed how good he really was? What was it like growing up the son of a superstar? Did Mitch ever offer any advise to his sons? Find out the answers to those questions and more in this exclusive look back with son, actor Chris Mitchum, on A WORD ON WESTERNS, recorded at The Autry Museum May 16, 2017.

I thought Bogart was in a better version of "The Big Sleep," but the Robert Mitchum version of "Farewell, My Lovely" was an improvement of the earlier version titled "Murder, My Sweet." Were there other versions of Philip Marlowe with Robert Mitchum? I only know those two, but Mitchum was in several films noirs.

There's a very interesting interview with Ronald Reagan at his presidential library that in it he talks about John Wayne making the movie The Green Berets and how certain factions in Hollywood tried to purposely torpedo it, Reagan was Governor of California at the time and was told tickets weren't available for the movies opening but in reality they were trying to make the movie look bad by having empty seats on opening night, try looking up Ronald Reagan/John Wayne on youtube and I'll bet you can find it, it's pretty interesting what he said happened and especially John Waynes reaction when he caught on to what was happening.

No one can blame nepotism for Chris's career either because he has a lot of his father in him but I am sure he might not have had his initial opportunity without a of dad's help.

Chris Mitchum was, at best, an extra. His father and John Wayne gave him a career. I also would like to say that I am tired of people who acted in some western movies pretending to be "cowboys" in their later years. This show is lame. Word is not even from the west. He is just a producer from Florida who found a way to make money pretending to be a westerner.
@bluenetmarketing
@bluenetmarketing 2 года назад
@@tomsampson8084 Not sure why you are so negative. What you say doesn't make any sense. Acting is acting, it isn't a documentary using real people. Besides, people change careers all the time. And there's nothing wrong with finding a way to make money. We all do it. Have you done any acting or movie making? You might like it and be good at it if you try.

“Out of the Past”-known also as “Hang My Gallows High”. Amazing, incredible performances way beyond their years. David Lean wanted to work with Mitchum and misplaced him in “Ryan’s Daughter.” His stature was too powerful for the part. The intimidation Mitchum brings to “Cape Fear” (1962) and the final scenes show how wonderful an actor he was. His great body of work will guarantee his iconic place in movies for all time. The best voice ever. Can't remember the exact title cause it's been awhile, but I think it was "Home from the Heart" with him , George Prepard, and George Hamilton from 1962. Great movie.

Mitchum in El Dorado play the perfect alcoholic ... the trails of the old west man in towns all over America at that time there were a lot of functioning alcoholics in the 1800's

Hey, Rob. I ran across this interview with Chris Mitchum and it is a gem, my friend. I like Chris and hearing him speak about hid dad is really a wonderful treat, and “the goose” is a hoot. The Cowboy Hall of Fame is mentioned and I have been there. An old service buddy was stationed there and I just had to make a visit. One thing that really caught my eye was the sculpture of “End of The Trail” with the totally defeated Native Amarican on his pony; what a moving work of art that piece is.. As an aside there were other Halls of Fame in that city including the National Softball. And Firefighters Halls of Fame as well.Thanks for the video, Rob, and take care, amigo.

Very, very good. Mitchum was underrated. I always thought it was so easy for him he looked bored at times. Good to see Chris again. Never did know what he all did.

@@AWordonWesterns the one my dad has is a pincel drawing to not sure the artist obviously different person then the one on your show but anyway i turned my dad and my uncle on to your show and we all watch on Sundays now and its awesome because we live in defrent states. So its true when they say the show brings people together to remember the golden days of TV. Heck i grew up on gun smoke anf just found out recently that my grandfather played steel gutuir for bob wills and the Texas Playboy's and they use to play shows and then hang out with a lot of the cast members of gun smoke and wagon Train.

Wonderful ! Just found this post ! I've always been a Big fan of this era of great movie making. Can't wait to watch more. Marion Morrison must really be enjoying whats finally happening to the Spoiled American Socialist (SAS-sing) criminals and creeps in politics, academia, media, entertainment and law today that will restore our country to the Founding principles.

Great interview, wish I could've been there. Mitchum mentioned the TCM Film Noir series on Sundays. Someone here awhile back commented on how Rob should host a Western genre one on TCM. I STRONGLY agree. Rob has the knowledge, the love, connections and the ability as an interviewer to make an outstanding program Saturdays would be a great time.

What a nice fellow Chris Mitchum appears to be. I'm so glad I watched this because he was always one of my favorite John Wayne support actors, along with Victor Laughlin. I always wondered why he seemed to just disappear from the American movie scene and this explains it. I'm glad he found such great success elsewhere, but it sure was our loss. Thanks for nothing, Hollywood.
