World Champion Steer Roper Kenny Call became an actor in 1981 co-starring with Burt Lancaster in his last western, "Cattle Annie and Little Britches." Parts in "Silverado" and "Lonesome Dove" followed. How did it happen and what did Kenny learn? Find out as the Champ shares rollicking memories of working with these and other western legends in a knee-slapping interview. Recorded Jan 15, 2019.

Kenny Call is one awesome man and cowboy. He headed up a local small cattle drive for some of his friends and neighbors in Acton, CA. Saved them a ton of money and stress as they were in Texas. All of the drovers in this dusk into dark drive were amazed at his ability to make his way in the dark over and through rough terrain. The missing cattle were delivered safe and sound back in their own pens. Kenny Call it was an honor to have shared a moment in your corner of the world!!!

Kevin Costner went to my high school. Always love a good western. I think most Americans love 'em, because not only is it our past, but a lot of us had family live through that past. Did I get it wrong? I think Mr. Call's point with the Burt Lancaster story was that he actually helped Kenny look better...not himself. Great stories! My buddy had an interesting little Burt Lancaster story he shared with me. His uncle lived in the Hollywood area for many years and would have little anecdotal experiences with stars & celebrities every so often. One day his uncle was shopping in a clothing store and ended up in line behind another gentleman at the checkout counter. The gentleman had purchased a tie and was having a devil of a time paying for it. He explained to the cashier that he never shopped and didn't have any cash but he thought he might have means of paying but didn't know how to use it. He was very apologetic and slightly embarrassed as he handed over his wallet and the clerk rifled through his credit cards. The man didn't know which, if any, were useful...nor how to use them. Between the clerk and my friend's uncle, a suitable card was found that worked and Burt Lancaster thanked them profusely for being so understanding of his ignorance and went on his way.

My first real experience with the stage was playing trumpet in the pit orchestra. The musicians' job was a lot harder, and by the time we were 1/4 of the way into rehearsals, everyone in the orchestra knew the actors' cues and the actors' lines better than the actors did. I've always had a pretty low opinion of actors. And lately, I just wanna tell 'em all to STFU and strike a pose. But I love these old western actors, in particular the ones who were cowboys who were recruited to act, rather than the actors who had to learn horse-riding for the movies.
@tarnsand440
@tarnsand440 4 года назад
Some of the newer westerns is so obvious actually embarrassing.. they haven't been taught to ride horse well before making the film. Only thing I can think of is the director doesn't know the difference. Kevin Costner Tommy Lee Jones Sam Elliott Ben Johnson....these men can ride like the wind.

Back in the 90s Duvall and his wife bought The Rail Stop Restaurant in Fauquier County, The Plains, Va. It went from being a little hometown eatery where you could get an Omelet, Club Sandwich, a bowl of Chili and a Grilled Cheese Sandwich or other American diner fare for a reasonable price to fancy, foo foo and only Millionaires from neighboring Loudoun County can afford the place. It completely alienated the locals. Mr. Duvall however is known to be very friendly, approachable, charming and most gracious. He gives Tango Lessons at their Restaurant for $500 per 1/2 hour. He also donates a Lesson to any cause that asks him to. My ex-wife managed a Starbucks in a Barnes & Noble in Manassas VA and Mrs. Duvall, an avid reader, would shop books while Bob drank Espresso. He signed many napkins, pics etc for my wife over several visits. He loves to dine out. You can walk into most better restaurants in Northern Virginia, especially Italian & Barbecue joints, and see a pic of Robert Duvall arm in arm with the owner and family. It's really hard to not like the man. I think he is one of the absolutely most consummate actors of his day.

Yes absolutely, I was thinking of Bonanza and several other westerns he had parts in during the 50’s and I believe early 60’s. Not as many as Deforest Kelly but like most outer space actors (please correct me if I’m off base here) of the 60’s on they cut their teeth on early westerns. As I known you’ve brought up in the past Gene Roddenberry’s name was all over western scripts in the 50’s. About the only reason I wish I still lived in Ca is the Autry Museum.

I never, ever understood the popularity of Silverado among hardcore, older western fans. I remember answering a post years ago as to what my three favorite westerns were. I listed Shane as #1. A kind soul responded, advising me that if Shane was my fav, then I just had to watch Silverado. I'd always avoided the movie because highlights of it just didn't do a thing for me. A couple years back I decided to watch it, mainly because Dennehy was in it. He was good, if course, but, imo, the movie overall was a dud. I still don't get how it's in western fans' top five.

@@AWordonWesterns Sorry, no. Her shows still are aired on the the nostalgia channels, though, so she might be reachable through SAG, since they must be sending residual checks to her. Hope you get to talk to her.

Not being a fan of Hollywood or actors and actresses in general I will say that Robert Duvall is the most believable cowboy actor I have ever seen. Costner always seems to cast himself in the hero's role then delivers his lines in a bored monotone as if he's reading an audiobook about growing a vegetable garden or something.

I couldn't disagree with you more regarding Costner. Open Range was a great western and he held his own with Robert Duvall, which is saying something.
