@@jeaniei1111 Anthony Burgess, in one of his autobiographies, said that Lewis Grade wanted to end the film at the crucifixion as he felt the resurrection was anti-climatic. Too funny.
For me was not only as Jesus , indeed is the best role ever played in a movie o serie tv of all time even better for me that Marlon Brando in the Goodfather , Robert Powell with this performance has achieve the price of the best actor of xx century and not yet supper pass in XXI , only then come Marlon Brando and Al Pacino

Your scene of Jesus healing the blind man and then your confrontation of the scribes and Pharisees in the temple was some of the most powerful and convincing acting I have ever seen ,hope you are well Robert
Interestingly, 2 years earlier, he had a small non speaking part in "Tommy" by "The Who." (He was Tommy's father.) In a strange way, this almost foreshadows his taking the role of JESUS in "Jesus of Nazareth" (1977).
Yessss/ Sir Powell thank you Soo much / Nice Jesus movie but Everytime wen isee the film my heart sad and feel so much pain/ Lord Jesus I believe you:)
"Jesus of Nazareth" (1977) was my favorite JESUS film. My 2nd favorite was the 1979 "Jesus" with Brian Deacon. If you check out the 1975 "Tommy," by "The Who," Robert Powell has a small non-speaking part as Tommy's father.
I was 19 sir when I saw this movie! Sir, you brought Lord Jesus, shall I say, Person So close to my heart! I am 53 now, I on occasion watch this masterpiece again! I pray you are well! God Bless.
This guy portrayed Jesus Christ who spoke with authority. Thank you sir for accepting the role of the greatest person who ever lived, your role has transformed many people around the world and am very sure your reward is huge in heaven.
The "Highlight " of your career must have been your truly awe inspiring portrayal of our Lord Jesus Christ . In my lifetime it has to be the single most important piece of acting ever recorded. You brought my Lord and Saviour to life for me and I cannot thank you enough. I feel that the Holy Spirit was imparted through you during the filming of Jesus of Nazareth. You are a very gifted actor, and a true gentleman. Thank you for your stunning portrayal which will always be the greatest portrayal of our Lord Jesus Christ.God Bless you Mr Powell.
The movie blessed my life quite recently and I really like it so much that I keep watching it over and over again. It helps me to memorise Scriptures. I am a visual learner.
One of the best actors of all yime...if not the best ever....just saw him in the Jesus movie and am shocked and awed by his marvelous acting and representation of our Lord.
Yes Robert is my favour actor because I think he is overhuman in All his performances eventi TV films theatre ..I remember the Asphyx..Arlequin and...HOW HE PERFORMED OUR LORD
This was the movie that resonated so strongly with me growing up Catholic. Religion was my favorite subject in school because I understood the Gospels. Now I woke up to become the Divine Feminine and Earth Angel.
I was 17 sir when you portrayed the lord Jesus Christ! Sir, you brought his, shall we say, Person So close to my heart! Iam 57 now, I on occassion watch this masterpiece again! I pray you are well! God Bless.
No matter what, Powell will always be the definitive Jesus. Even when the video has nothing to do with that miniseries, we know that is exactly who Powell was born to play
I have considered the term LOVE when it came to few actors, because i considered them part of my family. I have always loved Roberts work in everything he has done. There is honesty in his voice and presence and a sense of warmth that i felt while watching him. I am with a friend when watching him.I remember The Asphyx, The Survivor, What waits below and then the performance that has lived with me every day of my life,i'm not going to mention the title of that six hour film that was made for television.I thank GOD for living in the same time as you Robert, i hope it is ok to call you Robert, and not just Mr. Powell, because i think of you as a dear friend who brought me great joy.
I love this man!!! He portrayed Jesus so well, in my opinion! He was very real. My Jesus is so important to me! I always seem to see Mr. Powell's face!!!! Thank you so much for doing the film for humanity. I wish more people believed!!!! Tu ❤
I honestly thought he was channeling Jesus Christ when he portrayed him in this movie... I've never seen an actor have an aura of the Divine as in this movie
Someone said he had to be in solitude to meditate b4 the scene of Jesus giving the sermon on the mount.... you know, always felt like he probably couldn't get any other acting jobs because he was just SOOOO GOOD at playing the role of Jesus and that's all people would see when looking at him. smh. I didn't know he was a British actor. No wonder I don't see him in other films. I'm not from Britain. Glad he had a great career!

I fell in love with "Jesus"...OMG those amazing blue eyes...but I really fell in love with Robert when, on a visit to UK (I m an Aussie) I saw the Detectives...what a hoot..laughed till I cried. Luckily a friend was also a fan and sent me recordings of nearly all of the episodes. I still dig them out now and again and have a good laugh
I Love Robert Powell this interview is just wonderful, Mr Robert Powell is so down to earth, Mr Robert Powell is an incredible supremely talented Great Actor and his portrayal of Jesus Christ was absolutely spell binding it was just AMAZING, The Power of Mr Robert Powell's acting In Jesus of Nazareth goes beyond INCREDIBLE, he was so convincing as our dear Lord, he brought hope and tears throughout the whole series, a strong Powerful factual TV Series that WILL be part of television history FOREVER, Having had the opportunity to have worked alongside Mr Robert Powell in The Detectives was pure heaven which I will NEVER forget, Mr Robert Powell was so very kind, so Very generous, so very down to earth with me and having the opportunity to have great hugs from the actor who in the past portrayed Jesus was complete HEAVEN, Thank you Robert. God bless you always .
I do love the fact that a 10 min interview with Robert about his entire career manages to spend 2 mins on 'The Italian Job' and not 1 second on 'the elephant in the room', but having just rewatched 'J of N' for the first time in 40 years, wondering if it still would have the same impact as it did, and it was BETTER than I remembered, and whilst there are lots of obvious flaws and annoyances with it, the central performance is just mesmerising and deeply moving. I'm sorry but, nothing else I've seen him do comes close, but then why would it?
Perhaps the best portrayal of Jesus ever! He made you believe that he was him! No one knows what Jesus looked like. In fact if you went back in time you could not pick him out by looks alone... But when he spoke... You would know instantly in your heart!
I really value the movie Jesus of Nazareth. I am pretty certain it will remain my favorite Jesus film. I tell others about it. I am 64 now, and I watch parts of it sometimes, when I feel the need to try to picture Jesus visually.. it's just such a work of art. In addition to Robert Powell, I especially like James Farentino as Peter, and the man who played Joseph the carpenter. Also John the Baptist. Michael York
Your performance as Jesus in the movie was incredible. I personally don’t think there is any other actor perform as Jesus the way you did . May God bless you
This is the truest thing I have heard in decades. Shy people use acting as a way to express themselves and are usually shy. I used it to come out of my shell. Legit.
Ηe was the best jesus of all .His playig was perfect, his appearence was as he were the perfect god. The best actor of all the years. Thank him for giving us this great movie. I feel sorry if my english aren't good that because i am from Greece.
God knew I needed some form of connection to our Lord, because as a kid, I don't know anything about Jesus except for the images of Him in Churches, paintings in our house, and in my mom's prayer booklets :-) And so Jesus to me was just a character out of this world, or imagination.. unreal. And so God showed me "Jesus of Nazareth" when I was about 11. That's the first time I "met" Jesus :-) and knew He is real. I Thank God for that. And thanks to Robert Powell. God used him to be an influence to millions of people, who, because of that movie, were drawn closer to our Lord. I was one of them. If only Robert knows that.
Jesus of Nazareth is hands down the BEST movie chronicling the life of Jesus. A 6.5 hour masterpiece. That and the Passion of The Christ being a close second. Whenever I watch those, every time they hit me in the heart and the gut. So powerful.
I was an overseas student in Southern England from 2009 to 2012. It was a shame that I didn't get to watch him in a stage play in Portsmouth before I left for my home country :"(. Love him in the 39 steps.
It was a little weird for me when I first heard Robert Powell's voice in an interview. I had been so familiar with the Jesus of Nazareth movie for years. I'm so used to that voice speaking the words of Jesus. Then one day I hear that voice, rather than saying "Except a man be born again Nicodemus, he cannot see the kingdom of God", talking about acting projects and performing in front of an audience. Of course the real Jesus Christ didn't have an English accent, but you still can't help but love the job that Mr. Powell did playing Him.
Lovely interview. I’m sorry the film where he portrayed Jesus Christ was not mentioned as Robert Powell played the role magnificently, but it’s significance is largely lost on those who are not Christian. The film and his portrayal of the Lord certainly reawakened my faith and it continues to fill me with awe. But indeed many of his other films and TV roles are terrific. Robert Powell speaks with modesty, sincerity and serenity His voice is a beautiful gift.
I was a about 12, I think when Jesus of Nazareth came out. I was mesmerized by his portrayal of Jesus. It used to be on every Easter. My most favourite Easter movie ever made.
Even listening to his voice is eerie, the odd word sounds like Jesus of Nazareth, I know church's with his image on a hallway on the way in, nothing wrong with that I suppose. We don't worship brother Robert, but the Christ story was told very well in those films, that astounding cast could never again be assembled. RIP Franco Zeffirelli who died June 2019, Robert's brother was an atheist and went to see Jesus and saw his brother and converted. People got to know scriptures because of those movies. Among my top 3 ever favourites. Thank you Robert
Maybe because of poor volume but could hardly understand a word she said. I've only seen him in a couple of films but his portrayal of Jesus was truly inspired.
The thing that amazed me about his performance as Jesus was how he NEVER blinked. Watch it again sometime and pay attention: he never blinks. And that makes his eyes all the more stunning.
I just love this super adorable man. He's nailed the act of Jesus perfectly, all his movements were natural and convincing, nothing he did on screen, was forced. Whom one saw in the title role of Zeffirelli's mini-serial, was a revolutioner, due to sweep the delusion away that any illusoric view or bad habit, if becomes a convenience, is harmless. And now, he's a donator and a returning reader at Keats Community Library in London, altogether with his faithful co-worker Lee Montague (originally Leonard Goldberg!) and Michael Palin, the star of Monty Python films.
Robert - the highlight of your career ? If you were to read the comments here, clearly you left a huge impression on so many people with your portrayal of Jesus. If I was in your shoes, that would mean a lot to me as an actor.
For me was not only the best as Jesus , indeed is the best role ever played in a movie o serie tv of all time even better for me that Marlon Brando in the Goodfather , Robert Powell with this performance has achieve the price of the best actor of xx century and not yet supper pass in XXI , only then come Marlon Brando and Al Pacino
When he portrayed Jesus and he went to the Jordan River to be baptized, I can still picture it now, they showed his face, my mom started to cry because you resembled (what most photos represent) Jesus to look like. Remarkable.
If you're reading this Robert Powell. there were two other things I liked besides your phenomenal portrayal of JESUS. Even though it was a non-speaking part, I liked your small role in the 1975 "Tommy" by "The Who" as Tommy's father. I also enjoyed your role as Edgar in an audio production of Shakespeare's "King Lear."
I saw Jesus not as a far away God in the ethereal, but as a real Person who lived a human life. Because of His portrayal, I gave My life To Christ, and our relationship has been strong ever since. Thank you Jesus for counting this man worthy enough to portray You. I love You always.
Robert Powell was well sculptured by Jesus to play the role . God gave him exactly the right features one could possibly imagine Jesus would be like. Till today it's my best actor so suited for the role of Jesus. I thought after the movie his faith would be undaunting .Sure Jesus will hold him close to his heart .
