She was doing a parody of Lyda Roberti....at the end of the song she walks downstairs and ties her shoelace. A few years later Lyda Roberti had a heart attack and died while bending over to tie her shoelace...weird coincidence.
Absolutely adorable. Ginger was the consummate entertainer. She could act, sing and dance so well while epitomizing old-school femininity and elegance. Actors and actresses of the Golden Age of Hollywood possessed genuine talent.
You'd have to be aware that at this time Lyda Roberti, a Polish performer, was exrtemely popular...Gerswhin wrote Cousin From Milwaulkee for Roberti.......Ginger is doing a "parody" of Roberti's style.... fun!
Ms. Rogers is imitating Lyda Roberti who played the character on stage. If you would like to see Ms. Roberti she does a wonderful song in Mlllion Dollar Legs, 1932 she was a vaudeville performer who then went into movies. Sadly she died very young at 35 from heart disease.

Bizarre that Rogers and Astaire were only fourth and fifth billing (not necessarily in that order) in this film. They stole the show, though. Always admired Ginger for her work ethic. She and I might have had our differences on many things (politics, religion et al) but you can't knock hard work, perseverance and a talent that was, to some extent, underrated - sadly. Great that people still find her very watchable - she was one of a kind.
Fred Astaire danced with a lot of great dancers. He is best remembered for dancing with Ginger. I think that speaks volumes about the talent, intellect and powerful personality of Ginger. Ginger could do anything.
This is Jerome Kern's song I believe. I like Ginger Rogers best of all Fred Astaire's dancing partners. She always had a sense of humor as well as being an accomplished dancer. Go Ginger!
