"Hands of Stone" is now a movie! Roberto Durán wasn’t just a great boxer; his career was legendary, his boxing accomplishments hard to believe. He fought in 119 professional contests, winning 103 (70 by knockout) and lost only 16. He won titles in four different weight classes and fought in five decades, the 1960s through the 2000s, and he was 50 years old when he fought his last fight. Oh yeah, when Durán was 14, he reputedly knocked down a mule with one punch! This story doesn’t seem like fiction, because Durán was a fierce puncher whose competitiveness often astonished the crowd. In such a contest, few would have bet on the mule! Let’s explore the career of Roberto Durán, alias,Manos de Piedra, translated in Spanish as Hands of Stone. Was he truly the greatest boxer of all time? Mean Streets of Panama Roberto Durán was born in 1951 in Panama and grew up in the slums of El Chorrillo in the district of La Casa de Piedra (House of Stone) in Panama. Yes, Hands of Stone came from the House of Stone. Who would believe it? After a brief amateur career, Durán began his professional boxing career in 1968 when he was just 16. Fighting with little professional training, he still managed to win his first 21 fights without a loss, before wealthy landowner Carlos Eleta bought his contract for $300 and then hired trainers Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown to teach Durán the finer points of pugilism. Durán then went from being a devastating puncher to one with excellent defensive skills. Oh, yes, and he could also throw a great left jab and take a punch, both required attributes of a champion. First Title Fight Initially, Durán fought as a featherweight (127 lbs.), but his first title fight was for the World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight championship (135 lbs.) against Ken Buchanan at the famous Madison Square Garden in 1972. Durán battered Buchanan about the ring for 13 rounds, was way ahead on all score cards, and then at the end of the thirteenth round hit Buchanan with a body shot that Buchanan’s trainer considered a low blow caused by a knee to the groin, which video showed was not the case. Nevertheless, since Buchanan couldn’t continue the fight, Durán won the championship on a technical knockout (TKO). Thereafter, as far as some people were concerned, Durán was a dirty fighter, though anyone with two good eyes knew he didn’t have to be. At this point in Durán’s career, he was 29 and zero. Career as a Lightweight Durán won his first 31 fights and then fought a nontitle light welterweight bout against Esteban de Jesús, who, a stylish boxer, outpointed Durán for ten rounds and won the contest with a unanimous decision. This was Duran’s first loss in 31 fights. Two years later, in a rematch against de Jesús, Durán, repeatedly landing a left hook to the body, slowly wearing down de Jesús, finally knocked him out with a vicious - and memorable - right cross to the head in the eleventh round. For years, boxing fans remembered that punch. (Please note, in those days all championship fights lasted 15 rounds, not 12 as is the case nowadays.) Sugar Ray Leonard Durán, after amassing a record of 62 and 1, gave up his lightweight title in 1979 and began fighting as a welterweight (147 pounds). Continuing to win, Duran eventually squared off against Sugar Ray Leonard, the undefeated WBC welterweight champion. The fight took place at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, where Leonard had won a gold medal in boxing in the 1976 Olympics. Duran didn’t like the fact that he would be paid one-fifth of what Sugar Ray was supposed to make, so he taunted and insulted Leonard in press conferences before the fight, hoping to intimidate him. Well, apparently Durán shook up Sugar Ray, because in the fight he continually beat Leonard to the punch, winning a unanimous 15-round decision, the fight later dubbed as the “Brawl in Montreal.” The “No Mas” Debacle In his first fight against Sugar Ray Leonard, Durán seemed to have the mental edge, which is very important in a fight, almost as important as the physical aspect. But in the second one, fought just five months later, Leonard was determined to intimidate the Durán. For instance, in the seventh round, Leonard wound up with a right handed bolo punch and then hit Durán with his left hand. Then, during the eighth round, Leonard landed a solid uppercut against Durán, who turned and walked away from Leonard and declared, “No más!” (no more), ending the fight. A TV analyst for the fight, heavyweight champion Larry Holmes kept saying “I don’t understand.” Seemingly, only Durán understood why he quit. This was indeed a humiliating defeat for Durán, and if his career had ended at this point, he could have been labeled the biggest chump in the history of boxing. But Durán did what many people have done in the world of sport and the movies too, for that matter. Always having a flair for the dramatic, Roberto Durán redeemed himself. The Big Comeback On a related note, Durán had a cameo role as a sparring partner in the movie Rocky II, in which the comeback kid himself Rocky Balboa wants another shot at the heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed. Durán soon climbed back into the ring, fighting as a light middleweight (154 lbs.). He lost fights close fights against Wilfred Benitez and Kirkland Laing. Then Durán signed a contract with legendary promoter Bob Arum and got a title shot at hard-hitting Pipino Cuevas, knocking out Cuevas in just the fourth round. Also, in November 1983, Durán fought “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler, the great middleweight champion. Durán survived 15 rounds with Hagler, at the time, the only fighter to do so. Durán was ahead on the scorecards after 12 rounds but Hagler prevailed in the last three, winning the contest. Next, Durán fought another title fight, this time in June 1986 against WBA light middleweight champion Davey Moore. By the fourth round, Durán said he knew Moore couldn’t hurt him, so he relentlessly stalked the champion, eventually knocking him down with a thunderous right hand in the seventh round and the fight was stopped in the eighth, as Moore could no longer continue. As coincidence would have it, this was Durán’s thirty-second birthday. After the contest, the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to Durán, who sobbed openly. Regardless of the circumstances, Durán was nearly always a crowd pleaser and a hero to Latinos throughout the world, and the infamous “No Mas Debacle,” as the great announcer Howard Cosell dubbed it, became a distant memory. In 1989, Durán fought Iran Barkley, the WBC middleweight champion (160 lbs). He knocked down Barkley in the eleventh round and then won a close decision. Since Durán was 37 at the time, it is considered one of the highest achievements of his career. Ring magazine called it the greatest fight of the year. Twilight Years Now in his forties, Durán continued fighting as a middleweight throughout the 1990s. Against many opponents, he looked very impressive, and he managed to win the NBA super middleweight title in 2000, beating Pat Lawlor. Nevertheless, he lost three of his last five fights, which must have told him something. Finally, in July 2001, he lost the super middleweight title fighting against Hector “Macho” Camacho and retired at . . . 50! Afterword Today, there aren’t many professional boxers who will fight in over 100 bouts, much less win 103 of them. There aren’t many who will fight until they’re 50 years old either. Roberto Durán was certainly the last of a dying breed, soon to become extinct, it appears. But Durán didn’t simply fight for a long time (34 years); he was a great puncher-boxer with a stainless steel jaw and the heart of a tyrannosaurus. People liked him too and enjoyed his panache and ferocity. Only once did he throw in the towel, but he made up for this “bad night” many times over. Many boxing purists think Durán was the greatest lightweight fighter of all time, and this is almost certainly true. However, many think he was even better - the greatest fighter of all time. How about you?

It was a different era. Best fighters of all time in it. Also they fought alot more often back then raising the skill level and for 15 rounds. Duran peaked at 28 years old in his 73rd fight against Sugar Ray Leonard. I always judge a fighter from the time he starts to his peak. Saying that I will say Muhammad Ali was the best followed by Duran. I don't see Maywether anywhere in it.

I wouldent have him in my top ten heavyweights for example but without question his 11 or 12 for me and I'd put him ahead of the klitchkos. aldo I'd have them somewhere in the top 15. You have to admit he completely dominated the division for 5 years from 18 - 23 that's very impressive when you think how young he was. why he falls short of the top ten is his career was never the same after that but he had a great skill level and was a absolute animal at his best. He was very very good at his best.

I loved seeing Mayweather school Canelo. According to Canelo, Mayweather would grab him and poke his eyes, clamp his nose, and cover his mouth when they were clinched. That's the reason why Maidana bit him. Mayweather is an amazing boxer and brilliant tactician but he can be dirty when needed to be.

I did see 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 in his prime. I was in Madison Square Garden the first time he came in he fought Benny Huertas in that incredible one round fight. When he knocked out Benny Huertas. But they went toe-to-toe for the better part of one round. And at the that time 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 made such a big hit that they brought him back after. And I was the judge in that first fight that 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 ever lost to Esteban DeJesus in Madison Square Garden, where 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 walked into a left hook in the second round and he was sitting on the canvas looking up at DeJesus. And DeJesus just cruised to a ten-round decision. They fought two times after that for the Lightweight championship and 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 won both of them» “But interestingly enough,𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 was an aggressive, very, very quick, very, very well trained, very well conditioned fighter. And when you look at Floyd Mayweather’s career, he did have trouble with a big Jose Luis Castillo at lightweight. And I think that, without question, I just don’t think that Mayweather, as good as he is, and he’s a very, very talented fighter, can hold off 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻. I mean, 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 was extremely aggressive. Hit very, very hard. Just an awful guy to beat. I mean, you had to be very, very strong and have a heckuva punch to hold him off. And Mayweather, although he has a good jab, has hand problems. I don’t think he can hit 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 hard enough, jab him hard enough without breaking his hands. And boy, when Mayweather hurts his hands you just know it. Because he starts going straight backwards, like he did with Famoso Hernandez and Victoriano Sosa. “But with 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 you had to have a heckuva punch or a heckuva great left jab to keep him off of you.𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 would have hammered him to the body. Eventually probably stopped him in eight or nine rounds.”

Subió no favorito 5 a 1.

Duran was old and a 130-135er, the fact he fought and competed against the other three is insane,. He was fat as hell between fights and spent training camp loosing 40 plus pounds. I think he was the best boxer out of the three. Haglar a close second. Then Sugar. Hearns chin wasn't bad but it cost him against Haglar and Sugar Ray. I think he won one of the Sugar Ray fights and the first was an early stoppage to me. I don't think Ray had the gas to get the job done.

People always neglect when mentioning the Castillo fight that Floyd fought him again in a rematch and did much better. I guess that screws with the narrative. Also, I don't think it's right to say Floyd didn't fight anyone when he beat Corrales, Castillo x2, Corley, Judah, DLH, Hatton, Marquez, Mosley, Cotto, Guerrero, Alvarez, Maidana and Pacquiao along with a slew of lesser contenders. It's kind of insulting to all the aforementioned champion-level fighters to act as if they're "nothing" just because you don't like Mayweather. He was exceptional defensively and had some real keen instincts and speedy reflexes, to go along with sharp, well placed offensive capabilities. No one's just beating him easily, let's not get delusional. I don't even like the guy, but people let their personal opinions cloud their judgement way too much sometimes.

He impresses the hell out of me. I knew 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 from the inception - he trained at the Fifth Street Gym (Miami). I watched him all the time. A guy I trained, Duran was working with him - Vinnie Curto. A lightweight hurting a middleweight. There was no smarter, cuter fighter than Vinnie Curto. The only thing that bothered 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 was a long, left jab. And Mayweather doesn’t have that. Certain guys give certain guys problems. We haven’t seen what gives Mayweather problems. Are we talking 15 rounds? I like Duran. I like Duran. You’re talking about Mayweather going 15 rounds. 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻 was pressure, pressure. He was strong. He could punch. God, he was a great lightweight. He takes advantage of every little thing. And he did it smooth, with grace. He may have quit and to this day noone fully understands why, imo 1 bad night doesnt outweigh 103 wins and 70 ko's. Both fighters fought in different eras and both are now retired, obviously noone truly knows what would happen if both fought in their prime but from what ive seen in the 10 years ive been a boxer and from all the boxing matches ive watched, roberto duran is hands down the most vicious fighter i have ever seen at lightweight. Mayweather imo was much wiser and more polished at welterweight than when he was a lightweight, back when he was pretty boy floyd he was more raw and aggressive which made for more interesting fights but he was best at welterweight. Similar to that, duran was his prime self at lightweight, at welterweight he was fighting naturally bigger men such as thomas hearns and he struggled, and later in his career he was losing to fighter like vinny pazienza at middleweight. If duran and mayweather fought at lightweight, duran would obliterate him. If they fought at welterweight mayweather would out point him. @@sittienakan1594 Hagler, possibly. Floyd never fought at middleweight, so it's a moot debate. Leonard, maybe. He was a little more consistent on offense and may have eked by on a decision. But Leonard had a world of trouble landing cleanly on another outstanding defensive fighter, Wilfred Benitez. He would have encountered the same problem finding the very elusive Mayweather. Hearns, not likely. He also had a difficult time decisioning Benitez. Mayweather was so much more dedicated and even smarter than Benitez. Hearns usually faded late. Mayweather only grew stronger in the late rounds. He would have come on late, taken control and decisioned a tired, frustrated Hearns. Duran, not in a million years. His kryptonite was fighters with mobility and speed. Duran wasn't especially quick on his feet. He always had big trouble against fighters who could move: Leonard, Benitez, Pazienza, Viruet. Duran would be lost trying to find and land on Mayweather. A one sided decision for Mayweather. So the only guy who would probably beat Mayweather was Hagler. And that's only because of the natural size difference. Mayweather's style though, would certainly give Hagler difficulty. Marvin, like Duran, had his troubles against smart boxers. Witness his bouts versus Willie Monroe, Ray Leonard, and even Duran. Move on Hagler, don't allow him to get set, and he could struggle. Talentwise and stylewise, Mayweather could very well defeat Hagler. But the size and strength edge might give Hagler a close nod. Mayweather was extraordinary. It's a shame that folks won't judge him fairly and instead try to diminish his amazing talents because they are insanely salty about him.
