Duran couldn't get to him and got annoyed and quit like a little baby. If he couldn't bully his opponent, he didn't want to play. He took his money and went home. YUP, like Hector says, Duran trained for almost "5" months for the first fight w/ Ray. He was so chiseled and his cardio and overall motivation was the highest it had been since the rematch w/ DeJesus ! But, Here's a part of the story NO ONE has heard but Jim Jacobs, me and a few others, Roberto and Felicidad among them obviously...Jesus I hope I dont get killed for sayin all this..Its been YEARS man....OK, here goes. I used to buy and trade fight films w/ Jimmy as he had at that time the most comprehensive boxing library in existence. I bought some old fight films from Jim and we talked on the phone a few times, but I had never "met" him yet. Jim was a "Class Act", a true gentleman in an unsavory world, and was respected by everyone. He helped Mike Tyson out a lot at one point and was universally loved, seriously...So anyway I find out he's in town and Im looking to get some old films of Olivares and he winds up coming to one of my gigs so we end up meeting in person in California. The band goes on break I sit down with Jimmy and the conversation turns inevitably to the subject of Roberto Duran. And we both agree he's the best light weight ever which sets the stage for our next dialogue, which was via telephone almost a decade later. This is what Promoter and a legend himself Jim Jacobs told me concerning that rematch with Ray. I will never forget it because, like I said, Jim "knew" I was a Duran fan from the old days, so he relished the conversation, and he told me Duran wept in the limo on the way to the airport after the rematch because he "KNEW" he hadnt been prepared and he KNEW "why".... So this is what Jacobs told me that night. Jim said that Duran literally had to take diuretics' and train in a rubber corset to make weight for the 2nd fight w/ Ray. He made "weight" but as they say "it wasnt GOOD weight"..... and here's what very few know....Duran's wife had a gambling issue and "they" , Roberto and his wife had an arrangement"...she didnt press him about his affairs and he didnt press her about her gambling... And thats how their marriage worked "at that time"....Anyway, Ray decides to fight Duran again and catch him out of shape because any real fight fan and fighter KNEW Duran at that stage of his life "blew up" after a big fight... Anyway, and Duran had blown up to 190+ before their 2nd fight. What Jimmy told "ME" was that Roberto's wife was into the mob and they were starting to press him for the $.So Eleta decides w/ Don King to make this money and of course this would help Duran out at the same time, and thats "WHY" the fight went down like it did. He told Freddie Brown to stop the fight after the 5th round because Duran "knew" he was unable to cut off the ring like he did in their first fight, because he was outta shape AND Ray was a lot more elusive then in their first fight, and Duran did NOT want to get embarrassed. He told Freddie Brown to "stop it" but Brown refused saying "The money's already in a bank in Panama, we'll never get out of here alive if we stop it" You beat Lou Bizzarro when you had diarrhea", and Roberto replied "this isnt Lou Bizzarro"! Duran fought the 6th and 7th and then when he returned to his corner again asked Brown to stop it and when he refused Duran said "if you dont stop the fight I will quit in the middle of the ring and then YOU can think of something to tell the world" Duran, the DURAN that beat Ray in Montreal, who trained for 4 and 1/2 months and was in such shape he came in 2 LBs "under" the welter limit, THAT Duran beats any welter alive at that time, including Hearn's. ANYONE ! ps. I have NO agenda here other than the truth and I will most likely erase this soon because it makes me nervous to repeat this shit on account I dont feel like gettin shot, but I SWEAR on all things Sacred AND Un-holy, THIS is what Jim said to me that night some 30 + years ago ! Perhaps Jim embellished some things, I cant say. It certainly wasnt like him to be anything but honest and dependable. Jim sadly passed away from leukemia some time ago but he was known as an honest, integral man in a shitty business and like I said, everyone liked him.Ask Iron Mike about Jim Jacobs, or Teddy Atlas.....or anyone who was around and is still alive who knew Jim.... Anyway, thats it Peace everyone, salud Roberto Duran !

End of the day it's Duran's fault he let himself get out of shape and let himself get into in a position where he decided to quit. That being said, some things we can gather are: 1. Duran in Montreal and Duran in New Orleans had two very different levels of focus and fitness. 2. Leonard did not want any parts of a fully fit Duran in the rematch and deliberately pushed for a fight with a compromised Duran.

So tired of the excuses being made. Let’s cover a few things here… 1. Duran knew when their next fight was, it’s not Sugar Rays fault. There was literally 5 months between both fights. Smh 2. Duran expected to give Leonard a beating but didn’t expect Leonard to move as much as he did. He got embarrassed and knew by the 7th round there was no way he was going to win the fight, so he QUIT. 3. Every time I turn around there’s a new excuse from someone else on why Duran quit. 🙄🙄🙄

WRONG,1 Duran wasnt in the "shape" to cut off the ring like he did in their first fight and Ray was going to stick and move. Ray has said in print that his plan was to catch Duran out of shape.....Period...If he was so sure he was better, than WHY did he make Duran wait 4 YEARS for their rubber match ?! Duran was betrayed by his own management, who signed the fight and "committed" Duran to the fight without telling him, giving him 45 days to lose 47 LBs. I know this because I heard it from promoter Jim Jacobs and Duran has come out and said this many times recently. Last sunday I met Roberto for the 2nd time and his daughter and son for an article or perhaps a book on Duran

Ray....why would anyone want to fight his biggest rival, when the rival wasn't at their best? Duran, a pure fighter with street smarts, never gave Ray the satisfaction of that 'win'. Ray even says it today, that the 2nd Duran fight is not a satisfying memory. Duran didn't give it to him and Ray knows he had to fight a lesser Duran, to 'win'. When they were both at their best, Duran wins. Ray cherry picked some more as he 'retired' a few times. Never fighting someone without having some sort of advantage. Tommy Hearns weighed in at 145, the morning of the fight, for their 1st fight. How does that happen? MONEY TALKS. I heard that Tommy was very upset about it, that was on Steward.

The 3rd Leonard fight he stopped fighting before the bout was halfway through. Like he had an unspoken agreement with Leonard. He woke up when Leonard got cut late. But it was too little too late. Moore was a novice pro. Barkley was built for him.(but, I admit was a tremendous effort). Tainted legacy! It pissed me off! Shoulda NEVER happened!

When the rematch finally happened, Duran was in a hazy, clenched ass-cheeks, and getting humilitated inside the ring. And that was when he quit. It wasn’t the No Mas fight that made Duran never the same, it was after he was gifted tons of money after his first fight with Leonard. This was when Duran redeemed himself and beat Davey Moore, who’s in his physical prime compared to Duran’s past years. If we're to understand all of these comments; 1)Despite having made weightfor the fight...(!!!!!!!), it's Leonard's Fault if duran eat, drank, partied like crazy, And Leonard Planned to have the rematch so close to first one...Because he Knew that on the second fight he'd win by drawing circles around duran ..!!! 2) Not being able to catch Leonard, was Leonard's Fault because he refused to play the game of the first fight..( Where Leonard gave exactly as much if not Way More than he received...!!!!!) 3) duran during the first fight won on decision, yet in the eyes of all whites spectators and commentators, and sellout don kong, duran KOed Leonard at least 50 times during the fight...Poor duran was Obviously robbed and was Such a Classy guy (with comments on Leonard's wife, headbutting and elbowing during the fight; All Honorable traits and Worthy of a Great Champion that he was ..!!!) 1: Whats "White spectators/commentators" have to do with two "Brown Men" fighting?! .....Half of the Cats in Durans entourage were "Black" Afro-Panamanians, friends he grew up with from Robertos neighborhood... As to their first fight, Ray did not dish out MORE than he received. He was rocked several times in that fight, not just that 2nd round and never once had Roberto in trouble....It was a great fight and closer than many say. I know because I saw it "Live" but the truth is what it is. Even Ray admitted he was beaten and was obsessed on revenge as any real competitor would have been, and that his plan was to catch Duran outta shape. And no one at that time would have argued with you regarding Duran's psych tactics, which involved getting Ray upset by virtue of insulting Juanita. Chill Bruh, Life's too short to get excited about people who dont know you and more than likely never will...Just sayin.

@@sherrillraymond7595 "REALLY"?!?!WTF does "White and Black got to do with a half Mexican, half Panamanian, a "BROWN" man fighting Ray Leonard ?!........... The "reason" there was bias from the crowd was because of US foreign policy at that time. I doubt you were even alive then but if you "were" you would know how hated we were at that time. You think its bad "now?!" Another thing, you a young un, but back "then", Duran was a LEGEND in the boxing world and an international icon, especially in Latin America, hadnt lost a fight in 8 YEARS, and was 71-1 in his 13th year ! So YEAH, MFs were probably a tad biased. For many years it was Ali and Duran. If you "watched " Duran, you would see Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman, etc, ALL up at ringside watching Duran..... As for the first fight, Duran was "never rocked" in that fight the way he stunned Ray in the 3rd and 3, 4 more times in the middle rounds. Yeah Ray made the fight competitive. I remember well as I saw it live. If you dont believe "ME", then just read any of the articles where Ray was interviewed, and he makes it clear how hard it was landing a "clean " shot" AND how wrong Angelo Dundee was to make Ray think Duran wouldnt bring that power up to welter-weight, which was "logical " if you talkin bout anyone but Duran.... At that time NO ONE , and I mean NOBODY has successfully gone from 135 to 147 and won a title in 42 "YEARS"..AND Duran was a lot faster than Ray or Angelo knew..... Ive said it many times and I'll say it again. If you knew anything about Duran you know he wasnt always motivated and when he was at 135 he could get away with it because he has so much power at lightweight, BUT as me continued to move up he had to be in top condition at "all" times..... BUT, as I said, the Duran who was so motivated he trained for almost 5 months and was in such shape he came in 2 LBs "under" the welter-weight limit in Montreal, THAT version of Duran would have beaten "any" welter I ever saw, including Robinson, who was better at MW. Duran vs Armstrong would have been a burner, or Duran vs Pryor......or Floyd, or even Hearns, who was just too big for Duran at 154, especially after rehydrating...shit look like David and Goliath with the slingshot.... Duran best P4P since Robinson...Even Floyd has said this. Dont get it twisted, I love Ray. Boxed the same gym in DC when Ray was a 13 yr old featherweight, and that was the same gym where Bobby Magruder has been runnin things for many years .....Bobby was Rays big opponent in amateurs in the DC area.

This is what ray wanted to do. Lie to himself and trick the naive dumb public into thinking he can beat Duran. When leanard knows he cannot. Durand team stabbed Duran in the back by signing the match behind his back and pocketed $2mill even tho they knew Duran was not ready. Boxing is a shady business. Duran didn’t even agree to the rematch but had no choice. He would lose his belt and the money. So he took it by force

Leanard bought the belt from duran. Duran didn’t want to let that type of money go. So he took the match even tho he wasn’t ready or in shape. Instead of losing to ray as he was paid to lose. Duran said nope I am not guna make myself look weak infront of everyone when he knows he’s better than Ray. So he just quit. That made him look worse tho which he found out later. Boxing is a dirty business and rigged and crooked just like american government. But at the end of the day Duran is better than ray obviously
