I've finally jumped into 4K UHD and what a time to do so. Arrow Video has released this beautiful new Dolby Vision graded 4K release of Prince of Thieves as a UK exclusive in several formats. While this film is the Robin Hood of a generation and sparked studios to finance many period films for the rest of the decade it to this day divides fans of swashbucklers and the Robin Hood legend.
This release carries both cuts of the film, the original 2.0 surround and 5.1 remix, all the legacy DVD and Blu-ray extras, a new documentary produced by Arrow housed in lovely limited edition packaging or steelbooks.
I find this film fascinating as it continues to grow on me more with each viewing. While I think it remains a gigantic mixed bag there are indeed reasons why it has stuck around in public awareness all these years. This new UHD presentation drives home the production aspects that seem like such a breath of fresh air: wonderful film photography and production design, a 100% real for real period film with nothing but practical effects, actors roughing it and doing their own stunts, a wonderful adventure score and a villain so dastardly...so deliciously evil that he not only cancels Christmas but also steals the entire picture.
