I've finally jumped into 4K UHD and what a time to do so. Arrow Video has released this beautiful new Dolby Vision graded 4K release of Prince of Thieves as a UK exclusive in several formats. While this film is the Robin Hood of a generation and sparked studios to finance many period films for the rest of the decade it to this day divides fans of swashbucklers and the Robin Hood legend.
This release carries both cuts of the film, the original 2.0 surround and 5.1 remix, all the legacy DVD and Blu-ray extras, a new documentary produced by Arrow housed in lovely limited edition packaging or steelbooks.
I find this film fascinating as it continues to grow on me more with each viewing. While I think it remains a gigantic mixed bag there are indeed reasons why it has stuck around in public awareness all these years. This new UHD presentation drives home the production aspects that seem like such a breath of fresh air: wonderful film photography and production design, a 100% real for real period film with nothing but practical effects, actors roughing it and doing their own stunts, a wonderful adventure score and a villain so dastardly...so deliciously evil that he not only cancels Christmas but also steals the entire picture.

Thank you for such an in-depth and professional review. This movie was basically the one cool non-family film i had in my house for years as a kid. I am stoked to get this package and see this in 4k and indulge in the nostalgia overload.

I do have a peculiar fondness for Prince of Thieves so thank you for devoting a video about it. It was a pleasure! I got my copy from Orbit they might still have some or get more. The film is a little goofy at times trying to decide what it wants to be but it's ultimately it's just fun and has a good heart. Quite amusing how the opening scene throws the whole "kids movie" into the trash bin! LOL The 90s was a strong decade for movies but you bring up a great point that catalog titles are the true star of 4k format

A good heart is the perfect descriptor. It means well and it’s heart is in the right place which is something you just don’t see anymore in the few films made of this type. I wonder who might release it here in the US since Arrow’s set is UK only.

One of my favourite films. I got the VHS copy for a Christmas present when I was a kid. One of the movies that got me into movies. Probably prince of thieves and Batman ‘89.

I have a soft spot for this film because I remember being 5 years old and seeing this movie at the theater. In fact I still remember the crowd losing their minds during the Sean Connery cameo. It is a mixed bag for sure but I still love this one. I think the score is amazing and I love the “trailer” shot of Robin firing the arrow with the flames behind him.

Absolutely. This factor made it the Robin Hood for a generation and has led to its longevity.

Great review. I did note at least one change in a musical cue on both tracks compared to the LaserDisc. Go to around 1:44:30 on the UHD where the Sheriff is telling the child that he had a very sad childhood. On the LD and VHS, there is a musical cue as he looks up towards Marian. On the UHD, those notes aren't heard until the next shot. Not having the DVD anymore, I couldn't say if it was changed there as well.

Thanks for that I will definitely check it out. Everywhere I checked seemed identical other than the slight difference in dynamics. It could’ve been changed in making the 5.1 mix for the Warner dvd and BD.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader I'm also not sure if the extended cut/seamless branching played into that change too since I downright refuse to ever watch that cut again. Theatrical or bust!

I haven’t seen it in ages but it is underrated. Actually it’s probably a bit better than Ocean’s Eleven in terms of Rat Pack films.

Well, thanks a bundle for the quick review. 😉But seriously, I would have never thought that I’d watch a commentary of that length on a movie I found to be middling at best. For my taste, Kostner was wrong in the role. Brosnan on the other hand … what an intriguing idea! I’m not sure about Milius: The film would have been brutal, earthy, straightforward and without romance. But it would have had a strange political message for an English legend. The goodies aren’t worth the money in my opinion, probably I will wait for the standard edition. Again, thank you for your dedication; your knowledge and insights are always welcome!

It's funny, while Prince of Thieves does have tonal issues... compared to movies over the past 15 years the tone is rock solid.

I re-watched Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves very recently. I do like the movie even though it has flaws, I have always enjoyed it each time I watch it over the years, and I am definitely getting the new Arrow Edition. I have always been a big fan of Kevin Costner too and I have enjoyed most of the movies I have seen with him. I agree, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was in desperate need of a proper remaster. It is nice that Arrow included both cuts of the movie because the theatrical cut has not been available on home video since the original snapper case DVD edition from 1997. I would definitely buy the LaserDisc if I come across a copy in good condition. I still love PCM 2.0 surround audio on LaserDisc too. I find that it has a real punch that in the sound that the audio on alot of DVDs and Blu-Rays don't have.

Greetings from Santiago de Chile. I saw this movie in a theater of the center of my city in 35mm. It look great and I agree with many of the things you said in your analysis. That day at the auditorium in the line of seat before where I was with my father and mother there was woman (in her early 30s) with a child that I suppose had around six years. The movie was subtitle in spanish and she read it to this boy. My parents and I like the movie but we were all pissed up with this "audio version", but we didn't told her anything because this kid was fascinate. Trust me, these boy was fascinated with what was projected at the screen. After more than thirty years of this "theatrical experience" I think that people react to movies in a different way according to the way we understand a story. For example, I was 9 years when I first saw "The Godfather" UNCUT because the story was awesome. I still think is great, but with time I discovered many other layers and get scared with it's violence. "Robin Hood" is still a movie I enjoy, but I still prefer the one with Errol Flyn. Fingers cross that the good people at Warner Archive restore it and gave us a 4K edition. I would buy it the first day they release it. Adiós, amigo.

@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader Год назад
Haha, audience summary commentaries around you can be rather memorable in that way. This film still has the ability to mesmerize kids who see it and the increased level of violence does add a sense of gravitas or the trouble factor for a kid getting to see something a bit more adult. I always felt like it was getting away with seeing something darker.😂 I’m with you on the immortal 1938 film. Day one for a UHD. It was the first Blu-ray I ever bought long before I had a player.

I bought another blu-ray of POT in the UK a few months ago before this edition. It was released by another company, also called Arrow Films strangely, and the transfer was terrible, it looked like it had been ripped from a VHS tape. Needless to say this release has rectified all of my problems.

Well, Spencer, you still haven't convinced me to finally see this film that I've successfully avoided for all these years, but I will admit that you've come closer than anyone this far. I did kinda enjoy the Ridley Scott version, though of course nobody will ever come close to Flynn (with one exception) Speaking of that one exception, The '22 Fairbanks is in desperate need of restoration. The best version out currently is the old Kino DVD and while watchable, it's pretty ragged. Hopefully the good folks at Film Preservation Associates who did such an amazing job bringing back to life Doug's THREE MUSKETEERS for the recent blu-ray release will be given a crack at ROBIN HOOD as well...
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader Год назад
If you kinda enjoyed the Scott version you’ll kinda enjoy this. It’s still a must see for the visuals. Nowadays especially for the fact that it’s all analog and in spite of issues better than what is done today. Even if you don’t like it the new release is worth it for the transfer. The Kino dvd of Fairbanks version is indeed very outdated and the film absolutely needs work-and a new score would help…funny you mention the film preservation society…I just discovered them recently and have Three Musketeers in the mail.

Possibly dumb question, but when you say matrix out stereo mean to watch it in stereo with Doby up mixer engaged? If somebody was trying to get as close to the original audio as possible, is it better to watch in to channel stereo or up mixed?
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader 8 месяцев назад
Matrix audio was taking a four channel mix and being able to compress those into the main two stereo channels without any loss of sound quality. This was developed as a means of having multi channel audio contained within a two channel source that would fit on an 35mm optical track. It’s an outdated idea now, but was the predominant method for mixing and mastering film audio for several decades. Unfortunately, there’s not a clear-cut perfect way to do decoding nowadays as there are multiple versions of matrix decoding from different companies and more modern versions are trying to bring it out into a 7.1 or higher configuration. Generally your best bet is to use whatever Dolby ProLogic version you have in the movie mode. This is designed to mimic the Cinema decoder and is actually a significantly more advanced version of the original cinema matrix standard. The way matrixing is designed It is perfectly fine to listen to the track in either flat stereo or decode it out into four channel. But the proper and best way is to listen to the track decoded out so you actually get a multi channel soundfield with the center and mono surround decoded.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusaderI really appreciate your knowledge on this. It’s one of those terms I have heard thrown around and never really knew what to do with it. I am planning to watch Robin Hood this weekend and will use the original audio track with the decoder. Thanks for your answer and keep up the awesome work with your channel.

ch ultraz vor 57 Sekunden Great deep dive into this new Arrow release! Always enjoying the care and time you give to single releases like this. Did you also already read the full booklet? If so, would you rate it essential? Sadly for a short while the lim. 4K Zavvi only Box Set Steelbook Version with the Booklet seemed already oop, so I bought the single 4K Steelbook Version, which sadly doesn’t include any booklet at all, not even a shortened Version. Now I‘m tempted to rebuy the film again, which is a bit insane. ;) Greetings from Germany! Chris

The booklet is good but since it is mostly stills that are on the disc it’s not exactly necessary if you just have the steelbook.
