One of the most underrated guitarist in the world

Not "underrated" just not so well known in mainstream music. Almost every true guitarist knows of and has known of him and appreciate/love his playing. Drives me nuts how people say "underrated" because it's a trendy thing to say. I've seen so many people say this about so many well known and respected music artists, it's ridiculous. If you're someone who only ever listened to mainstream, trendy, top 20 radio crap of course you never heard of Trower, and you probably think rock and roll hoochie koo was Derringers only song ever. People like this will claim to be a big fan of an artist/band yet can only name songs played to death on the radio. These types have missed out on most artists/bands greatest pieces. It's something that has irritated me since I was a young teen.

@@warthogA10 If you dont like the word "underrated" then how about "underappreciated". I think the latter is what most people mean, when they say the former.
@warthogA10
@warthogA10 Год назад
@@k-matsu it's more about being "under promoted" by the music industry, which caused quote a few phenomenal artist to be less known or heard of in the public sphere. Take Rick Derringer... there's one song of his which is well known, but many who know the song don't or didn't know who he was, even though he was well known by all who are into music on a deeper level than most of the population and every professional in the industry. I guess what I'm trying to say is this... most of societys knowledge of music (before the internet) only knew music they heard on the radio. They know songs which are played repetitively on air and artists who were heavily/properly promoted by record labels, or even by artists who were very determined and aggressive about self promotion. And using the phrase "underrated" has been a trendy thing to say for some people, for whatever reason.. mostly because they've heard it said before. Kind of like how someone will learn phrases and words related to say wine, and use them so they seem knowledgeable. This isn't "over reading" it's a fact, and it's annoying to me personally. Calling an artist like Robin Trower "underrated" shows a lack of knowledge of him and his career. On the opposite end, there are a lot of artists who are overrated, who garner an astounding amount of attention and praise for just being "ok" too. It all comes down to what or who's trending among society. I knew kids who would say they were huge Queen fans, or many other bands/artists, but only knew their songs played to death on the radio, which most of the time weren't their best songs.. or the people who "loved" Led Zeppelin, but only because it was cool to be a Zeppelin fan. It comes from a desire to fit in, seem cool, and be liked. I recall a time knowing a kid who would boast of being a huge fan of a popular band, had all their records etc. so I asked him if he liked a song of theirs, which was another band, and he was like "oh yeah... I LOVE that song, it's one of their best" I'm considered weird because I nitpic people this way, but no one seems to think it's weird that people do these things. 🤷

When his set was through Bill Graham got on stage and said Robin just flew in from England he will be back tomorrow. The next 2 nights he was the headliner saw all shows. "Bridge of Sighs" was as much an influence on me as a player as anything by Hendrix. Robin has that physicality to his playing, you could actually feel the notes, which he demonstrated by making Newcastle City Hall vibrate like an earthquake when he struck up the intro. The live album is fantastic too, the feedback control on "Daydream" unparalleled, and really should have been a double. In a business and an era of fakery he's stuck to his guns and continued making great records and losing nothing in his playing. In fact he's probably better now than ever, which sadly can't be said about the music business. Some people's talent is bigger than money.

Still got my poster (taken from the advertisement boards off the wall) and ticket from the City Hall 1975 Robin Trower, I think we were very lucky as all the greats loved playing either the Hall or the Mayfair and when they got really big like Purple or Floyd they took over the Odeon, a fantastic guitarist and will agree he filled the hall with guitar.

I had the pleasure of talking with Robin Trower, opening for his band at the Ventura Theatre back in 1998. After sound checks I walked out on stage and asked Robin to sign my album Passion which he did. I had a five minute conversation with Robin, talking about Southend-on-Sea (I had been there) and the songs Caroline and Caledonia Robin is a kind, personable, christian man. He looked into my eyes as we talked and had that genuine smile of his. I have opened for other famous acts as well and brushed elbows with my music heros and, found a few to be cold, uninterested, and,,,,, well..... selfish. Not Robin..... He is truly a gentleman and, I am happy to have spent a few minutes with him. I stood on the side of the stage behind the lighting board and, got a great view of the entire band..... Awesome evening!

Robin Trowers guitar playing is incredible, you can hear the progression thru Procol especially but he was held back a lot there, and quite rightly left to start Jude a band I was lucky to see, short-lived though it was. He went on to an incredible future, in his own band with Jimmy Dewar, whose vocals were incredible! I went and saw Robin at a small venue In Indianapolis, in the early 1980’s. When we got there, there was one long line of people waiting to get in. As we walked by the front door to get in line, I noticed there was 4 people standing in front of another door and I saw a sign that said tickets would be taken at both doors. We took a chance and got one of the best tables. Robin was awesome and a friend that was with us found out that Robin was out back in his motor home and was letting one fan at a time come in. I got to sit across from him and talk to him for about 5 minutes. He was a super nice guy. That was an awesome night I will never forget.

Robin is on the short list of players who exemplify the phrase “being one with your guitar”. It is essentially an extension of his body. Jimi and Johnny Winter would be two other such examples. And besides being a monster player I had the privilege of seeing a few times in the 80’s, he got one of the best “guitar stank faces” in the biz. Very photogenic. I heard interviews recently that he still hopes to tours but since the pandemic has felt unsafe, especially given his age.

I love Robin Trower's music! I got lucky and I got to meet both Johnny Winter and Robin Trower after two different concerts in the Dallas area years ago. Johnny Winter was having some health issues at the time and his vision was definitely giving him some problems. I'm legally blind and Johnny was having to have some help due to his vision issues. But when I met him, he signed my ticket upside down. I didn't notice at the time and he couldn't tell either. I had to get home where I could look at it closer before I realized it haha. But that was a cool night meeting him. Robin Trower was a complete accidental meet. A friend and I had gone to a show he had put on in Dallas where I was pretty much dead center, up almost at the front row, and recording the show. I know he looked down and saw me doing it and he just smiled and jammed. He seemed to enjoy seeing me there with the microphone and really getting into his music. Having seen him in all kinds of videos through the years, I always had the impression he was really a nice guy. But anyhow, after the show my friend and I decided to walk over a few blocks to get something to eat. As we were walking along the back side of the venue over towards the restaurant, a door opened from the venue and out walked Robin and two bodyguard looking guys. He stopped and talked with my friend and I for about 10 minutes. He was just as down to earth and laid back as you could imagine. He was even nicer than I thought he would be. The other two guys had walked over to the SUV limo that was parked along a curb and got in it. After about 10 minutes one of them rolled the window down and yelled out "Come on Robin, we got to go" . He still stood and talked with us a few more minutes and then headed over to his ride. I got him to sign my ticket and I was really happy to have met him. He's definitely a very underrated guitarist and I'm glad he stuck with the music he liked and so many of us like. Record companies to this day are the ones that ruin a good thing when it's going on. It's a shame they didn't support him and let him keep on making his music. But he was on fire that night in Dallas and really in every show that I have recordings of since his early days. Thanks for another great video on another great artist! Brian in Fort Worth🎶

I have a nephew who claimed I couldn't play a tune from my IPOD that he couldn't tell me who it was. I played Benny Dancer. Not only could he not tell me it was Robin Trower, but he was literally blown away by how good the guitar work was. Especially when I told him when the song was recorded. I'm in my 70s and am still listening to rock. I love Tool, for instance. But, every now and then, I like to put on my headphones, crank up the volume and listen to Benny Dancer. It always takes me to a special place.

In my lifetime I have heard and seen some of the greatest guitar players, alas many are no longer with us - Hendrix, Moore, Green, Beck and a huge list of others. Following the death of Jimi, Robin became my favourite player and have seen him nay times. being a Scot, Jimmy Dewar has a special place in my heart having seen him way back with Stone the Crows in a small Glasgow pub venue. The combination of Trower and Dewar was just so extra special.

I did a cover of Robin Trower's Bridges of Sighs a long time ago. I thought was really well done and it gave the song a lighter more and more ambient tone than Robin's original version, which had a darker, heavier tone. It turned out to be a very beautiful song. I loved working on it!! That cover was one of my best!! I had a total blast doing it!!!

March 1973 Bought my first car - a Chevy Vega 4 cyl.- Stereo FM Radio first crank Robin Trower - The entire first LP in Stereo - June 1974 I'm at Radio Shack getting SCOTCH Reel-To-Reel Blank Tapes for Rehearsals and they are playing "Too Rolling Stoned" I thought it was a new Hendrix bootleg so I ask the clerk and he says "Robin Trower just released Album Two today" I walked to the nearest Sam Goody's and bought both LPs and Robin Trower has given me the most inspiring music for the last 50 years - this brought me back to the beginning - Thank You My Friend!🇬🇧🎸💿

Yknow, my dad was a sound man back when I was a little kid, so I got to meet & hear almost everybody, but one day at the ripe old age of 7, I was stopped dead-in-my-tracks, when I heard a song playin in the sound room at home one day & ask my dad who that was. He said it’s Procol Harum & that song is called Whiskey Train! What a great guitar sound that was, way ahead of its time! The next song on the album came on, called About to Die, another great guitar song! I was sold! I wouldn’t have another experience like that again in my life until in my early teens when I heard The Rover, by Jimmy Page & the mighty Zeppelin! Those 2 guitarists would solidify what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, period! Thanx Robyn!!
